  • I'm installing Surflex Clutch Friction plates on this Motorcycle. The friction plates are made in Italy and I have had success with them in the past. I purchased them from www.MGCycle.com and have had no issues with them!
Here is my 1973 (Model Year 1973) Moto Guzzi Eldorado Motorcycle. It is a number matching motorcycle that has is an absolute basket case. Let's break it down and rebuild it!
Please remember - I am a novice at this, so please don't use these videos as anything more than entertainment. Not everything is recorded (although I do try to record most things) and you will see me referencing manuals and websites for information. Many times, the information is conflicting. I rely heavily on Chilton's manual for this bike. You should rely on such a manual as well. Many times, I go back to inspect and re-inspect. Sometimes I may decide not to replace a seal or bearing that a professional would automatically. For me, the cost to me of the seal or gasket failing is low, as the cost to replace it later is nominal, as the time to replace it and the cost of the part is low, and the risk of perhaps damaging, though unintentional, 50 plus year old parts by wanting to replace a seal or a bearing that is not necessarily a consumable part is high. So, unless this is a pressing need to do so, I will leave the motorcycle as it is. I will attempt to do no harm!
If you would like a professional restoration, you should hire a professional restorer. If you want to work on the motorcycle yourself and want to watch someone muddle through a repair, then that is me. I am not a professional restorer!
    But enjoy!

The M8-1.25 grade 8.8 bolts securing the ring gear are torqued to 22 ft. lbs., the 10.9 flywheel bolts to 30. My experience with the Sure-Flex clutch plates has not been good - very abrupt engagement and clutch adjustment changes cold to warm.

@Amboman4 - I appreciate all your comments! - Positive and Critical. I am grateful when you leave a comment. I need to be called out if I do something wrong (and I am a firm believe that I learn more from my mistakes than my successes). I am a novice and explain that thoroughly. People, enjoy the videos, but don't use them as a step by step restoration. They are not!
For some reason, your comment is not being posted. I see your comment, and I agree with the 30lbs. I saw it on the sheet after I did the video... and they have been torqued to 30lbs. However, I really lean on Chilton's manual for installation, and I mean I REALLY LEAN on Chilton's manual, and Chilton's lists 25 lbs as the torque spec! The torque specs for this motorcycle are all over the place! The variations are mind numbing! And I really follow the installation provided by Chiltons, which is the using the lock tabs and bolts, without schnorr washers or lock tight.
And here is a dirty little secret. I normally slightly overtorque anyway. I am only slightly comfortable with published torque specifications, because there seems to be a wide variation based upon the sources.
For example, Head bolt nuts - Chilton is 27.48 (Page 42), Thisoldtractor.com is 29 to 32 , and HarperMoto is 35lbs (source - harpermoto.com/pages/motorcycle-parts-faq) - there is a 7.52 lb differential just in head bolt nuts! That is a 27% differential... and I trust all those sources!
      Suggestions for other clutch plates?

The torque figures on Greg's website are from the factory manual and are the only ones I trust. Over-torquing can be just as bad as under-torquing.
Guzzi stopped using the lockplates and went to schnorr washers on later models, good enough for me.
For clutch plates I prefer the SD-TEC clutch kit which has 4 mm splines and comes with the hub and intermediate plate. It's more expensive, but the best IMO. @@VintageRestorations-by-WS
