+Touma Chan That moment when I randomly come across you on a drum snare video....why hello there fancy seeing you here, the internet is a small place o/
SK1PTER well my old friend i am studying for as a sound engineer. :3 how's the gaming?
+Touma Chan The gamings good, throwing the idea of starting up a band with friends around, so I've been getting to know some shit about sound engineering myself.
it's just amazing how heads change the sound of the same snare, always amazed!

hi!
I've always kind of thought people were blowing smoke up my ass when they talked about the importance of different drum heads. This video really opened my eyes... or ears I mean.
Same idea as string brand and gauge
Skin's will make 90 % of the sound i was shocked as well.
In fact that's why i spent more on drums, when it fact buying a skin or two makes all most 90 % of the sound.
I thought the Aquarian Hi Velocity was the standout. Thanx. I learned something .
+Jack D. Ripper Completely agree. The Hi Velocity sounded the best on this particular drum IMO.
gonna get me one of those next time at gc for sure
Yes I agree going to get this head
That or the powerstroke 3 I wish we could do a test with high tuning and low for each head
I have that on my snare and I love it! I am going to get the Triple threat soon though because i have had the other head on my snare for a long time
Been drumming for 30+ years and it took this video for me to find, in my opinion, the best snare drum head ever. The Aquarian High Energy is massive and has beautiful tone. Heard it here, bought it and I’m in love. So, thank you, millions over.
The Aquarian heads have some special tonal qualities I like and that I would never have been able to comparatively appreciate without an audio shootout such as this. Thanks for taking the time to put this together!
This was way more helpful than I expected. Now I know exactly what I need to get for my sound. Really great video.
As a diehard EVANS user, I must say that my favorites were the Aquarian Hi Velocity and Hi Energy. Perfect blend of fatness and overtones.
The Emperors just always take the cake for me, no matter what. Incredible heads.
Aquarian makes really nice heads.
Studio X great Head
Coated Control Sound is my favorite, even the old one in the beginning sounded great. Thank you for this shootout, Glenn.
Aquarian for sure. Hands down best heads ever.
Aquarian heads are amazing. Not only do they sound better than most heads but come in at half the price....
I'm not a drummer, but i really like The Powerstroke 3 :D
Me too
Yeah those are sweet but I use Powerstroke 77 I like just a little more
It would be awesome if you had time-stamped annotations on the sides of the screen so we can A/B the various drum heads a little easier. Really torn between the new Remo Control Sound and the Evans HD Dry. Great video Glenn.
I'll see what I can do.
Glad to see this channel is heading in the right direction
would love to see an updated version of this, love to see how much just a different head can totally change the whole sound of the snare.
Wow, each of these snares have godly sounds. I've been using Remo snares for ages and they never fail to impress.
Gotta say, I think the Hi-Velocity head and the Hi-Energy head were the best ones.
Some favourable sustain and ring to them, as well as clarity and punch.
Saying that, mic placement, tuning, and the drummer have a lot to do with that!
That must have taken hours! Thanks, Glenn.
Now this was a really interesting video. Sometimes the differences between the heads was very slight at other times it was really quite massive. I suppose the take home message from this is to experiment with different drum heads regularly. Thanks Glenn I love these types of comparison vids. Keep up the good work!
The Drum Dial is not designed to get the same tuning from different heads. It's perfect to get the head in tune with itself but different types of heads will have different resistance. Would have been better with a Tune-Bot for the same pitch. Anyway, still a very nice comparison and I appreciate the time and effort this video took!
I think they all sounded awesome! It's really all about picking the right sound for each song. I've noticed that between a Drum Dial, an Aquarian Triple Threat, an Evans Genera Dry, and Masshoff tuning, using these in different combos, I can get ANY snare sound I want. Dense mixes get the Triple Threat, songs with more room get the Genera Dry.
I really like the way those Aquarian's sound.I recently put and Aquarian kick bass head on and it sounds amazing.Think i might go with them for all my heads
As a non-drummer, I had no idea how much of a difference the type of head makes. Great vid Glenn.
Remo controlled sound is the best in my opinion I love that snare head
Awesome to hear the comparison all in one video! Thanks for taking the time to do this! As it still turns out, you have reinforced my choices in heads, but it was good to hear the Aquarians, too, as I am not familiar with them at all but am a bit curious.
Most appreciated!
Wow. First time I've ever listened to different heads compared, back to back, on the same exact snare drum. The difference in sound is much more pronounced than I would have thought. If I didn't know any different, and I'd listened to this without knowing the title, I would have assumed that these were completely different snare drums being compared, not just heads.
From here, it would be cool to be able to instantly compare any of these heads against each other, because you quickly forget the precise difference between one head you heard earlier, versus the sound of the head you listened to 7 spaces forward in the order.
Congrats on a very helpful video with good audio quality.
I like the texture coated. just the right amount of warmth and top end. The texture coated w/powerdot rocks
What an awesome resource. Thanks Glen!
All my snare drums have these now Aquarian Hi Velocity: 3:12 and all sound great, got Black beauty, pearl sensitone alum, and brass, AWESOME ! tunebot 300hz top 400hz bottom and loosen just enough to let the snare and ring to come in and boom ! thanks glen .
Just stumbled upon this. Excellent side by side comparison. One of the best shootouts I’ve seen
When I had my kit I played a Joey Jordinson signature pearl snare with the aquarian triple ply high energy head on it and it was a monster. Out of all the heads in the video I think the Aquarians actually stood out the best especially the focus. Great video Glen!
Powerstroke 3 for the win ! looks great with pin stripes and sounds amazing !
I use Aquarian texture coated and love them. The Remo power stroke 3 and controlled sound both were great. The aquarian hi-velocity was unique.
The Aquarian Hi Velocity head had a good bit of meat with some nice overtones, and the Remo Controlled Sound (both old and new) both sounded even tighter without as much ring - but man that Remo Emperor is doing something to me man. In this demonstration that one just stood out to me the most as a perfect blend of snap, crack, and pop....I mean meat. The perfect blend of meat.
-anyway thanks Glenn, just ordered some fresh skins!
I'm pretty impressed by the Aquarians, particularly the texture coated.
HD Dry was pretty nice, and the Ambassador X has a good jazz tone.
the aquarian texture coated head sounds awesome. and the coating really lasts a super long time. cant beat the sound of the evans dry though.
Thanks for all the hard work in doing this. They all had there own sound to them ,that drum can do all style's of music.
Great video :D
The new controlled sound is my favourite.
Yeah it's good
Great comparison video i almost instantly picked out head selections for my various snare collection!
I absolutely love the way the drums sound in this studio. Nice work!
Thanks for putting so much work into this. Helpful for picking out my next snare head
the reverse dots are great for deep, low end, lown tuned snare. The coated emperor best for attack over higher pitched, tighter heads. And that controlled sound head, will just get you all around tones, with good attack and bite too.
Great job as always, Glenn. Personal faves: Aquarian Hi Velocity and the Remo Controlled. Punchy and bright without too much of either, which is what I like in a snare.
+Richard Poodles I was pleasantly surprised about most of the Aquarians and the Remo Emperor as well!
+Richard Poodles they were my 2 favourites as well. I never used to like aquarian heads but that Hi velocity sounds nice.
Powerstroke 3 on top with a thin Diplomat on the bottom has been my go to for years. But that Aquarian Focus was pretty sweet!
Well they all have their place depending on the sound you want. All are quite usable. I really like the Remo Controlled Sound,(New). I play alloy shell snare drums and these sound great on them.
I've used the Powerstroke 3 religiously for at least 10 years, but the Remo Emperor Coated @ 3:56 has an awesome pop, bright and warm with almost no overtones, and sounds awesome. I think I'm converting.
This video is fantastic. Thanks for doing this comparison!
The Powerstroke 3 and the Focus X were the best sounding to me.
thanks for doing this! i especially appreciate it because I use the same snare.
Great shootout, Glenn. Thanks!
very pleasantly suprised wwith the aquarians! i was ready to just be a brand loyalist! great review
I expected a bit of a change in sound. But there was a huge difference between each head. Now thinking of your enemy those dreaded samples. Let's say in a sample pack they have the same snare you have but different head, couldn't even come close. This information could be a bit of a game changer when it comes for me recording drums. Thanks
Awesome video. Finally, a snare head comparison where the tuning doesn't sound like shit. But I honestly can't get over mixing of the kick!
For me it was Aquarian that was the most interesting throughout. Cool comparison! :)
Cool video. I learned that the head I use and have been using for years is the best sounding for me. The REMO controlled sound. I use a 5.5" snare. There were 2 or 3 others that sound cool too that I might check out. but overall, the CS is perfect.
Pretty nice Shotout, the different pitches of the snareheads spoil it a little bit, but you can get an overall idea of what these heads bring to the table (Lowend, crack, sustain, ...).
This is awesome and super helpful. Thanks so much for taking the time to put this together.
It also proves how unreliable tuning with a drum dial is. The pitch varies significantly from one head to the next, even though I'm sure the tension is comparable. It makes it hard to compare apples to apples.
Still incredibly helpful and much appreciated!
You know, it's funny. I have used both The Drum Dial (tympanic pressure) and The Tune Bot (electronic pitch reading) extensively. And I have discovered that they both give almost identical results in terms of lug-to-lug consistency. In other words, a pressure of 75 on each lug with The Drum Dial will be a pitch perfect note all the way around with The Tune Bot.
The pitch variation in this video is a function of differences in head thickness and head material. The same tension from one head to another does produce considerable differences in pitch. That doesn't make The Drum Dial unreliable. It simply means that a perfectly consistent tympanic pressure of 90 on one head will produce a different pitch on a thicker or thinner head. Like any tool, you have to learn what works from one head to another and adjust the pressure accordingly.
First and last were the best to my taste. Great vid
Very nice variety of sounds.
You're going to hate me for that, but that was a good occasion to sample all of them in kontakt and sell it as VSTi :)
Lol. One day maybe!
SpectreSoundStudios
If you need a partner in crime, I create kontakt patches since kontakt 1.00 was out.
Hit me if you wanna do it ;)
Maybe it's not the best way to record a drum, but it's the only solution for bedroom players ;)
Wow Glen! Really surprised how different each sounded.
Remo Triple Threat and the Evans Reverse Dot were my favorites, but that's just me. Pretty trippy, though. I didn't think they'd sound as different from each other as they did.
Thank you for this. I have been wanting to hear something like this for years.
Remo for the win. The Emperor Coated and the Controlled Sound sounded snappier than the others. Open enough without ringing too much but still nice and bright. Won't have to dial as much top end into the snare with those (helps hi-hat bleed).
Wow! Thanks for this, I knew there would be a difference, but not that massive.
Absolutely shocked...never, ever would have believed that a head could change the sound that much...
Glen can you upload a version without any reverb on the snare. I want to hear the natural decay of the drum. Awsome video as always!
That's a possibility.
+SpectreSoundStudios ... What effects are on these clips..? :)
+Matt Korr i want that too
+SpectreSoundStudios Awwww thats a great idea! C'mon Glen!!
+SpectreSoundStudios me too please.
awesome vid dude, as a drummer, thank you very much!
great stuff dude! This video will be helpful as a reference for people to find a head that will meet their needs for a particular sound they may be after. I know all drums are different but as long as a drum is similar size and type to the one you used in the video I'm sure similar results can be achieved. Thanks for busting your ass in the name of better sounding rock and roll!
I vote evans hd dry
I have been switching back and forth between evans and remo for years now, but after hearing this my next set are definitely going to be aquarians. Although I still do really like a plain coated emperor on the snare :)
Dig the fiberskyn and aquarian triple threat the most due to a nice amount of bottom end thump and nicely balanced overtones, though who knows in the context of the mix; some of the others may cut a bit better. Awesome vid!
Really great vid. Simple testing. love it
Aquarian texture for small club/recording, the slightly more open remo control sound for live play. Both are nicely tempered with no detriment to attack.
That was good to hear the comparisons one after the other with no commentary to muddy peoples opinions. Personally I like the Evans HD Dry, Remo Ambassador X, Aquarian Focus X and the Remo Sound Control. Each to his own though, this is a great vid to compare and make your own decision. Kudos buddy
Thanks for posting this Glenn!! As a producer myself, I know what a pain in the ass this must have been. Really appreciate you taking the time to educate everyone with such a well thought out video. Keep up the great work!
appreciate you guys going to that effort. Kudos!
+clifford thanks! It took forever to shoot!
Great video. I appreciate you taking the time to do this one. If you take guitar strings of different gauges and tune them to have the same tension, they will sound at different pitches. I imagine if you were to do a guitar string shootout, you'd make sure they were tuned to the same pitch, right? Drum heads are no different, which is why some heads sound way under tension in this video. To complicate matters further, the sound of a drum is hugely affected by the tuning relationship between the batter and reso heads. So... I'd be curious to hear a v2 of this shootout with all the heads tuned to the same pitch. I'm tempted to say that might have been a better way to compare them, but maybe not. Maybe it would just be different. Cheers.
I'm blown away! all the Aquarian' s sounded way above the rest!
I've never seen a video out there that does what you've done here, Glenn. Great job.
HD dry is my fav tbh but they all sound really good
I was totally new to your channel. For once a really helpful video on drumheads, THANX! :D
Gonna get a few of theese to try out for my self...
Great illustration all have their on character I like them all pick your poison!!
I'm digging the Aquarian Hi Velocity, Remo Powerstroke X and Emperor Coated.
I was thinking of trying out different snare heads before. Thank Glen!
very cool, had no idea tone varied that much between heads!
Wow, never would have guessed how much difference it makes. Thanks for making this!
I still love using Superior Drummer for the songwriting phase, because shit actually gets done. Musicians my age tend to care more about sports, watching T.V., and their families for some reason...
High Glenn, A trick for changing a drum head is to use a 1/4" deep socket that fits into your drill chuck.Doesn't matter the size because you are going to use the square drive end. Thanks for the great videos. ROCK ON!!!
Appreciate the dedication put into this one Glenn!
Aquarian texture coated 👌🏻
This was a great shootout! Thanks Glenn!
Great video, I'm going to give Aquarian a try.
Speaking as a total knob who can barely play the radio I really like the Aquarian focus X
Great demo, thanks.
I liked the Remo emperor coated. Going to price check now. Thanks.
Reno coated emperor and power stroke 3 sound the best to me...been my top choice for years and I also own a pork pie big black...excellent snare drum
That snare sounds great to start with!
It's hard to make a pork pie sound bad.
+Paweł Morrison I hear ya. I have a Pork Pie 13 x 6" wood and it sounds great.
fan of the Evans reverse dot... mapex brass master piccolo. love to check out drum dial... do it by ear, that's how I was taught waaaaaaay back.
