- With the goal of being the first American male to win the Ultra-Trail Mont Blanc, Jim Walmsley is uprooting his home, his life, and his training routine in hopes of achieving what has never been done before.
American Ultra Trail Runner Jim Walmsley has accomplished so much in his career. Including wins at JFK 50 and the Western States 100, not once, not twice but three times. He set the course record at Western States 100 in 2018 and then went on to better his own record by 21 minutes in 2019. Further, he was named UltraRunner of the year four years in a row.

I think we all hope that Jim pulls it off, but let's give credit where credit is due. Kilian, Francois and a few other Europeans are damn near unbeatable in that type of terrain. It's absolutely remarkable that they can and do make the podium at every UTMB they enter.

It’s so cool how he sets his sights on one event and just digs and digs. We saw him do that with western states and now his name is so synonymous with that race, now he’s going for utmb! Go Jim!

Wow! I was wondering why I've seen all his runs on Strava from France lately. Now I know he's living there. His vert gains in a shorter distance are definitely more than what they were in AZ. Jim is an amazing athlete!

I agree - moving to France and running parts of the trail over and over again is a great mental and physical training. I have completed the entire tour the Mt. Blanc and I bumped into many ultra runners who run sections of the trail while training for the UTMB in August. There are also many running events during that time that would be a great form of training - one day on the Swiss side there were actually 5 different running competitions. It is a true paradise for ultra runners. Good luck Jim!

The digging analogy really resonates with me. Running in the high alps where I live is seldom ‘fun’ but is rewarding in the same way as a trench or large movement of earth, rock or dirt by hand. The tole on the body is similar and the determination to battle through arduous backbreaking slog is definitely required.

Jim Walmsley has such a good running form.
I'm a huge Jim fan and I don't exactly know why. He has a real X factor about him that you want to like. You want to see him do well. The opposite is true of some people where you secretly kind of don't like them, and you kind of get a touch a joy in seeing them not reach their goals.....but Jim. I just would love to see him take down UTMB. That would be oh so awesome!!

Great to hear "at last" that the "mountain" approach is better for such kind of ultra than the "T&Field /marathon".
This is what american female athlete understood long time ago but much less of the top male us ultrarunner.
My guess is that Joe Grant, A Krupicka, Mike Foote, Gary Robins, Barkley Guys and other really had the mountain mindset but lacked one piece to win utmb because of top competition.
Jim s friendship with François and repeated error&crash at utmb pushed him to change it all. Being crushed by Kilian in weather & downhill and Thevenard mastering poles (despite much lower VO2max) are real lessons Jim seems willing to learn now.
Finally us ultra mountain starts talking poles, backpack, technical, steep, bike, mountain intuition, ski....
Next challenge will be the grand raid de la reunionor echapée belle !
From Europe the difficulties of KJ and François on Western State never becam a topic because this race is just so specific in heat management and profile.
This year is the one for Jim, because François is elsewhere, Thevenard got Lyme issues, Pau got knee problems and Kilian has a crazy full Calendar with Hardrock and SierreZinal.
The thing is that there is plenty frenchies who topped10 last year, chinese would get back etc...
Maybe Jim's unique stride will justnever fit this utmb win ? I think he will get it someday if the falls in love of this "euro mountain approach".

Seems like he has a real shot of winning UTMB, but I wonder if Comrades might be a little closer to his highest skill set?
Actually, I think that a longer event on roads might be closer, like doing the 135 mile or 217.25 kilometer Badwater Marathon as heat is something Walmsley is practiced with for and during Western States and his Grand Canyon records or possibly the longer Spartathlon ultra running race a 245.3 kilometer or 152.4 mile running race name from Athens to the statue of King Leonidas in Sparta.
