When he set his mind to it, he approached the recording of an album kind of like how Disney would approach a blockbuster family movie. Every note, every drum stroke, every sigh, every breath he would poke around in, to maximise the emotional impact. And this song is a prime example of it: Not only is Shania’s vocal performance immaculate and almost absurdly controlled, the lyrics are quite literally right out of a Disney romance. ”I live only for your happiness” is not a sentiment I would want my children - or anyone - to embrace, and I’m sure there were a lot of young couples who were quickly disappointed with married life, after walking down the aisle to this song. But I digress.

Always thought so much of her for putting her career on pause to raise her 3 younger siblings after their parents were tragically killed in a car accident. The back ground male vocal is Bryan White. He is a country artist as well. He had many hits back in the day. Shania released a CD set back in 2002 titled UP that had 2 CD's, a pop and a country one. It was a bit contoversial but that calmed down after a while.
Whatever they 'thought' the word 'controversy' meant at the time, they clearly did not study the dictionary.
Basically it was singers/ songwriters/ performers who decided nobody else had any right to stuff them into any box or to keep them there; not the producers, not the managers, not the record labels, nobody. Shania had a HUGE role in that. Breaking out as 'crossover artists' really changed the face of music for the better.
People should be free to do what they want (as long as they are not hurting anybody else) and Art should be freed the same way; forget sticking to genres, that is not how the human imagination or inventiveness works.
Talent matters, spending the time to hone that talent into Skill matters, spending even more time turning that Skill into Art matters.
The politics of the industry can go take a flying leap. Let Artists Art. :)

Shania,although being Canadian is also legally registered as 50 percent North American Indian,wich was something i embraced with her early on. Next after Madonna,i think Shania is the absolute favourite female artist i have,noone can touch her. As a matter of fact,i call both Madonna and Shania Queens of Pop music and then some. Both have experimented with several genres.
And like Shania said once herself: "I love country music and i do consider myself a country artist,but you are correct,i have alot of pop,also rock in my songs. I love to mix the songs up,a country song can really be uptempo and rocking with heavier drums and guitars,same with my more pop`ier songs,they are not clean country by any means,but i always have abit of country sound with me,in every song. It can be that one instrument or 2 that still adds that country vibe to it.
Shania also admitted: "i have had people in the actual country music community hate on me for mixing theese genres together,they want theyr country music clean,and i get that. Shania tends to end her concerts with this song for a reason. And once you see her permanent band,you are just sucked in. They are from all over the world,at the top of my head i remember the bassplayer and the rhythm guitar player being Australian,several are from every corner of the US and more. I remember i had many of theese concerts several years back,and once i showed my mom them,she got HOOKED! She did not care for Shania until i educated her,i knew from working in radio how to "win her over",as i recommended new music to people daily there.
Mom kept asking me to play her theese concerts,she adored Shania all of a sudden,and she absolutely LOVED her band!

IPersonally,that makes me think of Madonna and how many lives she has saved through only hiring minorities over the years as her backup dancers and singers,plus using her fame to stand up against people in high positions out in the world,that wasnt doing theyr jobs too well. So Shania and Madonna have alot in common,not afraid to go theyr own ways,and let theyr voices be heard.

This was originally recorded as a duet with Brian White (another country artist from the 90s). That is who the backing vocals on this track were. It isn't her voice doubled. When she released it as a single, she made it a solo. The album cut is the duet version, and that is the one I used for my wedding in 2007.
Talking about the use of the piano in country music, made me think about Ronnie Milsap. One of the best piano players in country music. Two of my favorite songs by him are "Stranger In My House" and "Lost In The 50s Tonight". As always a fun reaction.

Let's face it, what's not to like about Shania. Not only does she have a wonderful voice but the camera absolutely loves her, she has tremendous on camera presence. She dominated the country/pop music scene in the 90's with hit after hit and as an added bonus she not only sang the songs but she either wrote or co-wrote almost all of her songs, she's obviously multi-talented. To see a more whimsical side of her you might want to check out: "That Don't Impress Me Much", it has a great hook and the official video is extremely interesting and fun. This song always brings back so many memories. My girlfriend was a big Shania Twain fan, so for her birthday one year, I gave my girlfriend tickets to Shania’s show at the MGM in Vegas. It was an amazing weekend - expensive but she was worth the extra hours I worked to get an incredible room and the tickets. I even surprised my girlfriend with a shopping spree for just the right dress, shoes, pre-show spa day and make over prep ($$$$$). We had a wonderful time and I knew she was the one. This was the song she said reminded her of me, so it became our song.
A month later I decided to have a ring special made for her - because you have to do it right after all - to surprise her. Then she surprised me when she told me when she said told me she was pregnant, but I wasn’t the father.
Good times!
She received a lot of criticism from the country industry, mostly for her attire and presentation. She was a pioneer for breaking away from the good ole boys kinda country, and one of the early artists to really blend genres. The entire country scene, today, and even pop, should really be kissin' this girl's ass.

As I recall it, the death knell for popular music started in 75 or 76 when that stupid Disco craze BS took over and its been a steady decline to where we are now which is nothing
Music is dead today. This song is from her "Come On Over" released in 98 or 99 and I think is still the biggest selling Lp by a female artist in history.
This Lp spawned seven #1 hits which is crazy and has too be some sort of record. She was one of those rare crossover artists that charted on both the Billboard pop and country charts.
This was and still is a great Lp and I still listen to it occasionally. Not only was she a great vocalist and performer but also a world class beauty, at least in my eyes and at 56 she still looks great to these 65 year old eyes.
I never cared much for country from around 2000 and on.
You have to go back to the 1940's with the likes of Hank Williams, Gene Autrey and others.

I always detested this version because they de-countryized it to make it appeal to pop audiences. Bryan White’s vocals were removed. Sad. It made a terrific hit on country radio as it was initially released. I wish y’all would hear that one.
