- Developer Roll7 excellently mixes high-scoring skating gameplay with shooter ideas to make a hybrid game that's tough to put down. Here's GameSpot's review.
Rollerdrome is similar to Roll7's other titles in that it's a single-player skating game that emphasizes performing tricks, but this isn't just an OlliOlli game with guns. Rollerdrome eschews the side-scrolling nature of Roll7's famous platformer series for fully 3D skate park-like arenas; as you skate through a single area, you must utilize walls and ramps to loop yourself around and to perform tricks.
Though it makes departures from the skating games that Roll7 is known for, Rollerdrome nails what's most important about them: it's an easy game to play that makes you feel awesome while you're playing it. - Hry
You know you've gotten old when you instinctively view this game as a Tony Hawk arena with Max Payne shooting mechanics presented in XIII graphics style.
Man, been a while since I've heard of XIII. All of these other IPs had newer iterations or never left the popular subcountious.

I'm impressed by the cel-shading, it actually does look 2D in screenshots. For a lot of cel-shaded games, it's pretty obvious it's using 3D polygons.
Still blown away that hardly anyone has mentioned the resemblance towards Jet Set Radio Future! JSRF was an absolute blast and it looks so much like this! I say it's more akin to JSRF x Max Payne with a sprinkle of My Friend Pedro 💪
For real, but also quite understandable.
Both Jet Grind Radio and Jet Set Radio Future were more open world games with a focus on rails and walls. While this one is similar to THPS as in being arena based, with pools, bowls, pipes, handrails and a focus on combos/tricks. JGR and JSRF had rollers, but the main goal was to paint walls.
I am now beating JSRF with my kids with cxbx on my PC! It's still incredible and looks great when you crank the render resolution
Point being I have enjoyed rollerdrome so far and the big win is it was 20$ not 50-80$ like I expected

Looks like a Dreamcast game in a good way. Backgrounds however seem a bit dull to stand out in the present.
Looks pretty cool! I always loved the roller skating aesthetic.
Pro skaters challenge lists, jet set radios air flow and trick variety, Max Payne’s slowmo, and a moebius inspired art style! With a heavy serving of cell shading goodness.
What do you mean skaters and shooters don’t seem like they work together? That’s like saying Kung Fu and Guns don’t go together. I was instantly sold on the premise of this game off its first trailer, and figured Sony wouldn’t spotlight it if they didn’t play an amazing prototype.
I have this game, and as soon as I started going through the campaign I immediately starting thinking of Rollerball as I saw both the original 70s version and the 2000s reboot via DVD.
This game is like the ideas and imagination of a 90s kid still living in the 90s come to life today.

The game looks surprisingly good, besides the similarities to jet set radio, the drawn cel-shaded art style is the most eye-catching to me as well as the game mechanics.

@@joselema85 Just read up on how they implemented that and and that's a cool solution! in this game it'd probably be annoying if your 'flow' gets messed up everytime you were in someone's slow-mo sight.
@@VeraTR909 it could be tweaked somehow so that it did happen but this is all just wishful thinking
Simple; change slow mo button to melee button. Change combo and trick tokens to health and damage tokens. Just make it Quake 3 on skates.
This game is mad welcomed in my books, it’s like a funky mix of Jet Set, TH, and Max Payne all rolled into one. Literally lol
Seems like these devs took some lessons from Doom 2016. Heal by getting in enemies faces and taking them out and using ammo as a way to force players to engage with tactics they otherwise wouldn’t. Cool to see some of those lessons being taken to heart.

Must be young. Was a time when online shooters all focused on movement for weapon, armor, health and ammo pickups. My personal favorite being unreal tournament. Halo or COD come up with the regenerating shield which caused camping and wall hugging. Ruined the genre for me
I'm legitimately disappointed they didn't tie your damage dealt to how well you're skating (incentivising trick shots) because the ammo system makes the two elements seem disconnected ("I've run out of ammo, now I need to go do tricks and be shot at").
It being tied to the reload keeps a flow and rhythm to the game. Certain enemies require more bullets which requires you to constantly being doing tricks or you will have wasted your shots due to them gaining shields after you shoot. If tricks were tied to damage the shooting and tricks would just be done at the same time instead of creating the rhythm.
That would mean you could beat the game without doing any tricks though.

The levels are hectic, pretty hard to pull tricks when you got 45 projectiles coming at you all the time.

I would recommend the trial if you have access to it.
I want more games with this artstyle like imagine a X-MEN game from these developers
I love this game, been having a lot of fun.
This game and stray really surprised me had more fun with both then some big budget games
Thats one thing im starting to notice: indie titles are carrying the gaming industry on their backs right now. Thats where all the heart, passion and creativity is.

The tricks are part of lore and worldbuilding. There are objectives that ask you to beat the score of other competitors.

Don't want to be _that guy_ , however, this would translate so very well to a VR headset.
My only critic in this game is I want to play more but the hectic playstyle is giving me pain in my finger.

When this comes on sale for half off or more then I’ll strongly consider it.
It literally has a free trial to play and is only $19 right now when the original price is $30 so now is the time to consider it.
Yea now is definitely the time, $20 is a steal and the game trial is brilliant marketing cause once you’ve had a taste, you have to buy it.

Boss fights would have made this great. A real death match, with stories and unique scenarios from bosses.
Yeah the concept is cool but the execution looks incredibly barebones and dull. This game is over $30 too when it looks worth $10.

Says doing tricks is at odds with the shooting and makes no sense...then says doing tricks is how you get more ammo and is essential to the shooting. >_

This game looks very AA and not in the good way. The body movement animations are pretty bad. Player looks like they are in a catatonic state when shooting.

@@Helloim_anthony No he talked about all the bugs and actually said he can not recommend it in this state. His videos are very long and go into detail on all the bugs. He did state that he did end up personally still enjoying himself playing the game if that is what you are misinterpreting as recommending. If you are looking for very in depth reviews that go into all details before purchase he is a great person to check out.
