- USMNT players not only broke but smashed to smithereens a European record this season with the likes of Christian Pulisic, Malik Tillman, Folarin Balogun, Weston McKennie and Ricardo Pepi contributing heavily to this new record. Today I break down what that record was and just how this generation destroyed it.

This was good, Pete! Could we get more of these types of videos? Not a whole lot of soccer channels doing quantitative analyses of our progress 🇺🇸
Agreed. More of this please. Tell Tact too. More depth on tactics and data analysis will bolster (or change) our beliefs about program and players. For instance, I did my own research concerning Christian Pulisic and concluded he needs to shoot more. His ex-goals per shot on goal is better than players like Haaland and Foden. Crazy right? He just doesn’t shoot enough IMO averaging only two SOG per game.
This may be a hot take but I don’t think this is the USMNT’s golden generation. These guys are paving the way for something MUCH bigger
I believe that as well. even if they go far consistently, I still have a feeling like this is just the beginning for the next couple of gens tbh. regardless this current gen is still fun to watch.
@@itslife1399 Yep, when the US has a true golden generation the whole world will know
When the us has a few player playing for Real Madrid, Barca, and Man City and in the starting 11 then you know the US has arrive.
Call me a data nerd, but this is one of the best USMNT vids I've ever seen.
Really awesome in-depth analysis, Pete!
Nice camera bro!!!😎
I really enjoy this video! Deff shows the progress.
That was a new sort of thing. I liked it!
Great video.
Interesting analysis
As a PSV fan from Eindhoven I can assure you Americans not to worry too much about Pepi's quality. He has proven time after time he doesn;t need many minutes of play to show off his skills which despite little playtime have increased tremenduously by training and being surrounded with champions leage level players and national champions. Same goes for Tillman who did become a starting player and Dest who has really unfortunately been injured for quite some time. If only for the increase of regard towards USMNT players in Europe = last season was a succes for the PSV Americans.
Hey Pete! Nice video. Would be interesting to see total minutes and goal contributions by country in the top 5/6 leagues. Brazil must be off the charts!
I really appreciate this annual breakdown and historical comparison, thanks man!
We should throw in goals *against* top 5 league teams as well (eg Haji’s goals against Man United and Wolves)
Much awaited video!!!
Wow what a statistic, great video Pete
Good Stuff 💋
Really good video! Fantastic idea.
Great video breakdown!!!
Great videos
Nice work, thanks Pete! Is there anyone out there that really think prior generations are better than today's though? I doubt anyone paying attention actually thinks that.
7:01 ❤
Not that it would have made much difference, but was there a reason you counted Chandler now and not in 2012/13 (3 goal contributions for Nurnburg in the Bundesliga)? Or Fabian Johnson (6 for Gladbach) or Aron Johansson (3 for Alkmaar) for that matter?
We are counting Koleosho as American?
He’s eligible the rep Nigeria, Canada, Italy, and the U.S.
Jozy bagging 38 Goals and then completely just never finding his footing way at a higher level; is why I don't get hyped up over Erdeveise goal scoring
31 goals, 7 assists
When you ask the best USMNT XI to chatGPT, you get THoward, SCheroundulo, Marcelo Balboa, Boca,Beasley, CReyna,Bradley,Donovan, Dempsey, McBride, Pulisic.
Do one about Mexico. That would be a laugh😂
Great video. It shows the progress of the player pool. It can also be used to compared and contrasted with the USMNT progress. If the players are progressing and contributing more and more their club teams but not to USMNT it is either the players fault or mgmt/coaching fault. When the team is not progressing is it the players or mgmt/coaching?
Well, the players are OBVIOUSLY progressing so…🤔
Those pie charts just aren't mathing
Is Everdise better than the Portugal league?
Been asking for this for some time and haven't seen this content. Perhaps after Copa America
I've been wanting to hear about "all time stats" from usmnt players.

Two thoughts:
1) The point you're making is only reinforced by the fact that you are only using the top 6 leagues. If you had allowed yourself to use Sargent, Haji, Griffin Yow, Busio, Tessman, etc., the difference would be even more stark.
2) I think the reason for all of the pushback against this generation is due to the lack of any signature accomplishment at the international level. All previous generations have at least a signature moment, if not a huge upset/overachievement win. This generation continues to accomplish the minimum expectation -- never anything more, but occasionally less -- and USSF continues to try to lower expectations in press conferences and celebrate mediocre results. This generation will get their due when they actually accomplish something significant at the international level outside of Concacaf.
Hannover and Schalke are 2nd league I'm Germany ... Right?
Now they are but back then they weren't.
All this in spite of GGG,....Just trying to play the antagonist.... Oh and i'm sick of the GGG hate because its silly. ;^) but maybe the opposite gets more clicks....
What I we miss is that the current team is handicapped by their coach. Give us the same coach from 2012 then compare the best of the two teams
We achieved this record because of Gregg's great coaching.
Sarcasm
Please explain how you found a way to make a video about Americans performing well in Europe about Berhalter. Can’t you just be even slightly happy?
Emma Hayes should coach the USMNT! She's far better than GGG.
My hamster is better than 3G
Bruce Arena said that there's more good players now, as opposed to saying the players in the past were better. Many of the 2002 players were very good to be fair. Our current team can't pass or score goals. Basically only Pulisic & Weah (& Reyna) score goals, and people don't want to entertain the idea of Weah playing striker.
Sorry, I can't buy having high expectations for this squad anymore, especially for the Copa America. Our top "talents" except for Pulisic and McKennie of course, have had horrible seasons for mostly mediocre clubs, (Reyna at Forest for example) and it has damaged their stock going forward like it or not because that's how fast-moving the European soccer market is. Most devastating are the players at great clubs having horrible seasons like Musah at Milan, Weah bench at Juventus, and Balogun at Monaco. This is not cause for excitement, i hold my breath thay their clubs are patient with these players precisely because they are young, but we're talking about Europe here, so I have my doubts sadly. Cherry on top is that our best ball-handling defender Dest is out. The team looks so much better and actually fun to watch as a whole with him (him being on the level of Pulisic & Reyna in ball skills is helpful and entertaining) than without him, without him the defense looks toothless with the ball and Scally is not equipped to fix that nor is he the same level of player Dest is. We saw Scally's "defense" at work in the CCL this year, supposedly what he can do competently, well it was not very encouraging for the national team, prove me wrong Scally, please.
A better way to look at the stats would be to compare like vs like, meaning the six goal contributors in 12-13 vs the top six in 23-24. Why? Because it’s too easy to say “we have more players now” or “we recruit more dual nats now.” Which is true both cases.
However, when going 6 v 6, we see 73 v 97, a per player average of ~12 v ~16. Also, if we throw out the contributions on either end of the curve (the highest and lowest) , and sum the middle four, the difference is even more stark: 33 v 61. And to take it a step further we could add coefficients to put more weight on contributions ie a goal on the EPL has more weight than the Erdevise.
As a data and stats nerd, I love robust findings. And I as a USMNT fan, I love that your initial hypothesis holds up under scrutiny.
The pushback on this generation is from idiots who only watch MLS every week
