  • Here's my brief review of 'Dream Scenario' starring Nicolas Cage. I did enjoy this one but it didn't deliver as effectively as it could have. Cool Zebra metaphor I guess. (remember, it's just my opinion)

I just saw the movie as well and liked it but agree that it is a bit uneven. Cage is great and I think the rest of the cast does a good job but do think we could have dove a bit deeper into their characterization.
I have to rewatch it to really articulate it, but I think the cancel culture themes are a bit of a red herring. I don't think the movie is trying to have any direct opinions on cancel culture but instead is using it as a framing device to show how much Cage's character is his own worst enemy. He thinks the world is against him but it's this negativity, narcissism, and overall weakness that plagues him even before the dreams start. The dreamscape exacerbates his problems but they were always there from the beginning.
I think a little bit of a tighter script and playing around more with the dreams themselves would have elevated this film some more but as is it is a solid B to B+.

Interesting perspective. I think it still has room to grow on me with an eventual rewatch so I'll keep that in mind.

The awkward erotic scene was not "inconsequential". It served as the turning point in the mass subconsciousness. Until then, Paul was basically a "good guy" who was given a gift that could give him fame and fortune. But then because of his paranoia imagining his wife was messing around on him, he decides it's OK to cheat on her with the assistant, which flips his karma. Now the thing that was initially a gift turns into his punishment.

I liked this movie. It was about as good as I thought it was going to be. Got a lil eh on the end but not bad eh just lesser than the first half

it would been great with a little bit of unscripted like chaos

I agree and I had the exact same thoughts coming out of the movie. But I don’t think I had not enough to chew on, I think I had too much that I could draw straws from any direction. Thematically, the movie was all over the place. The writers clearly focused too much on the subtext and not enough on the actual meat of the movie, which fell short.

"this is a pretty good Nicolas Cage performance" you lost me with that, I think you missed the boat by a long shot there.

I didn't understand most of the jokes even the "funny because it's awkward" ones. I just felt bad for the dude the whole movie. To Also I didn't understand why paul was uptight at the diner. Maybe it's my adhd/ASD but this movie just felt wtf and boring. Other than the corporate office being cringe that was funny. Not for me it's too artsy

I completely and whole heartedly disagree. The “funny awkward part” has to do with the subplot of staying loyal to his wife and shows how ultimately weak of a man he is. Also the hardest I’ve laughed in a movie theater for a long time. It’s almost hard to believe NOBODY ever laughed during the whole screening. That scene shows you more about the character while being a big laugh. What’s the problem? I feel like this is the best thing I’ve seen in theaters for a while. Nicholas cage is super over the top with the nerdiness but it takes 15-20 minutes to warm up to the character for me. It was super funny while simultaneously being sad and horrific. It’s a thought provoking movie and I think it’s one of the best of the year.

Fair. I did enjoy the film and found it amusing for the most part. The screening I went to had around 20-30 people; I was honestly surprised by the dead audience because I thought there were some genuinely funny moments. (I don't want to imply that the film is lacking for that reason). I think I could warm up to it down the line.
