2024 Update video: • Lexus LS460 OEM Contro...
Lexus LS460 control arm failure and knocking noises are a common issue and complaint on these vehicles. Watch my videos and you can fix that!
2007-2009 (and 2010-2011) Lexus LS460 RWD CAN upgrade to the revised 2012-2017 control arms. Lexus does NOT advertise this. Maybe they just want you to buy a newer car!
1) The steering knuckle is the same 07-17. This is good news if we are going to start swapping different part numbers control arms. That tells us the geometry is going to be the same.
2) The front lower arm was revised from silver to the black painted version, per the TSB related to knocking noise when braking.
www.clublexus....
3) The original part numbers for this front lower arm are 48620-59015 and 48640-59015. The revised part numbers are for the 2012+ fitment and are 48620-59035 with 59055 replacing that one and 48640-59035 with 59045 replacing that one. Based on the TSB, Lexus confirmed that 07-17 lower front arms interchange, but websites only show the new part numbers as fitting 2012+. Beware! If you have a 2007-2011 there is a great chance that Lexus will sell you the old, original silver arms referred in the TSB.
3) Lastly, while there is nothing official, the same conclusion can be said about the revised lower main arms that only show fitment for 12-17. Original 2007 part numbers are 48620-50070 and 48640-50070. The revised better bushing versions show on websites as "only" fitting 2012+ and are 48640-50131 and 48620-50131. Beware! If you have a 2007-2011 there is a great chance that Lexus will sell you the old, bad arms seen in this video.
These are the part numbers you need to order:

The video doesn't specifically cover the upper arms, but there are old part numbers of the upper arms. Unsure if the rubber or design was changed to improve longevity, but the part numbers above are the "2012-2017" revised P/Ns.
mine failed so bad the whole arm would shift forward under braking and the whole wheel would toe out lol. thanks again for the info!
same thing happened to me! twice! lol cuz I replaced the bushing with Febest, my wife drove a bunch of UPS delivery as a contractor and did who knows how many lock to lock U-turns, bushing failed after 6k miles, i'm just going to do the revised arm now instead of trying to save money on just replacing the bushing
Well I took your advice. Got all new 2013-2017 control arms. Put them on my 2012. No issues, no problems with fitment or alignment. Cars drives great once again.
Great work.
Yes I did by Lexus OEM arms. No aftermarket stuff.

All you had to do was turn the wheel and the bolt slides out
Hi thanks for the video do you know what is part nomber for AWD
"it's really not that bad.... Installation is opposite of (reverse??)".... Neither of which you showed. So what exactly are you saying here?
Awesome video, thanks! I replaced my struts with KYB gas adjusts and aftermarket upper control arms. Looks like I need Lower rear control arms and am thinking going 2013+ oem per this vid.
I have 48640-50131 and 48620-50131 in my partsmonster cart, right?
Also, will it make a terrible difference if the uppers were aftermarket and the lowers are oem 13+?
Probably will be fine. Might just need to replace the uppers again within a short time frame
I didn’t found that in my county , can I change it with another car silent bloc I mean the same size . Do u have idea
Thanks
Amazing video explained things clearly. Seems you used the improved version of the lower rear CA. Is that an OEM part? How about moog or movetech ones? Do they have the beefed up improvement? Thanks
Only use OEM stuff. I don't bother with aftermarket on something like this. Don't want to have to replace it again.
@@LILEVObeen two years. Wonder how are the new CA holding up. Would be great to have an update video. Thanks
@@tedlu008 I've only put on around 1500 miles or so. Not much has changed since the video!
1500 miles in 2 years, that’s very little driving on the LS460
Did your camber end up negative at the end after all the updates? I can't understand why I changed mine and I have a negative camber now.
No. Camber can only be adjusted if you loosen the main crossmember. It is slotted and can slide around to adjust camber
Can you just push the hub up to the ride height and torque down the lower arms? Seems like it would be easier with the car up.
Sure, as long as you take measurements. At my stock ride height there is enough gap for my hands and arms to get in between the tire and fender to tighten everything down.
Do you do the top or bottom control arms first, thanks
I worked from the top down during removal then the bottom up for reassembly.
How does it ride so far?
Any noticeable improvements ?
Very smooth, very quiet, no rattles or noise at all
Did you replace the ball joints that connect the rearward lower control arm and if so do you have a video how to remove them or is it possible to remove them without air tools? My parts have been sitting in the shipping boxes for 2 weeks because I looked at that ball joint and just know I will end up tearing the rubber and have to replace it. Even though everything else is an easy job, that ball joint looks like it'll be nearly impossible for me to remove.
It wasn't an issue with a 5lb hammer and air chisel. The lower rear arms popped right out of the ball joint
I just replaced my ball joint yesterday buy or rent a manual press. It's tough. Put my 275 on it with a 3ft extension. Make sure to use a decent vise to hold the upper. My press kit barely worked. 2hrs later had the new one pressed in. GL
@@Mastiffman1 yeah it was a pain when I removed it about a year ago, that separator made the loudest noise when it finally popped open. That's one job I didn't enjoy lol.
I honestly dont understand the preload torque on the ground those arms are going to move during operation aftet there tightened so theres no real recipe for wear prevention it just going to happen overtime
If you torque them right in the middle the will move the least in either direction up or down.
If you torque them all the way down they will have to move twice as much in one direction going up, and twice as much in the opposite direction if you reverse that
I have a 2007 Lexus ls460 where did you get the reinforced control arm with the piece of metal around it to make it stronger
Part numbers are listed in the video description. They are the 2013+ arms
@@LILEVO so we can order these from Lexus dealership? How about after market ones moog movetech etc, do they have an improved version? Thanks
Got my 2013 from rock auto
So these 2013 parts Fit on the 07’s ? I have to replace mine but If i can put in some “upgraded parts” Id rather do it
Hows it been holding up ?
Yes. All good. only put on 2k miles so far.
@@LILEVO Mine seem to be good. I had them on a lift and they look good even though they are the 2007-2012 arm part number (the stickers are still on them) but I know whenever they do need replacing, thanks to you, I will go with the 2013 part number.
Sorry if this is a dumb question but could one just replace the bushings if there is no wear on the arms?
There are no aftermarket bushings out there that are anywhere near the quality of OEM. That is why they are so cheap. You would likely be redoing the whole repair in 5-10k miles again. I learned my lesson on that. Same goes for the upper arms
@Glenn Wisse I can totally confirm with what he said about the aftermarket bushings, I replaced mine with bushings only, and from Febest which is suppose to be higher quality non-OEM option, only lasted 6k miles although, i thought it was because my wife did many many lock to lock U-turns when driving for UPS contract delivery, so I replaced the bushing after she quit UPS. Nope, new bushing failed after another 6k miles. Even the high end polyurethane bushings will fail, not because the poly deteriorates, it fails because the bushing will not stay in the original position on the shaft and will shift forward, thus changing the Toe angle of the wheel when under braking, and shift back to the rear position when turning in towards the center of the car.
You need to source the parts from polyurethane specialty shops. Send them the measurement and they will do it.
Do these parts work for awd also
AWD has different part numbers
Does AWD have this too?
No, different arms
Any tips on getting the castle nut off the upper arms? I have one that won't budge. Ive tried pb blaster and bc they are stripped some, I most recently tried a 17mm extractor and it won't grab it. Any tips would be awesome.
Process should be the same as any ball joint. Put upward pressure on the arm so the nut can't spin the joint, then blast off with impact
@@LILEVO I have a jack lifting at the rotor for pressure but the nut is so stripped its not grabbing
Just cut it off then. The upper arm has new nuts and ball joints
@@LILEVO The arm and joints are all brand new. I was trying to replace the suspension control arm reinforcement bracket bc Lexus said that was causing my car to lean on the opposite side. I ordered a new caster nut so I'll try to cut through this one.
@@LILEVO wish me luck lol
1:51. Wait. So even the revised arm is💩?????!!!!
The lower arms are good. The upper arms are the same style and design as early arms, but the upper arms usually last 90-100k from new. At least that has been my experience.
It’s just rubber. How the heck did Lexus manage to screw that up??????🤦♂️
Does anyone know whether LexusPartsNow actually sell genuine OEM parts or knockoff parts from different manufacters? Because I'm wanting to get some parts from them and I have bought headlight assemblies from them. Even though they themselves call it genuine OEM, it comes without the self washable feature that the car originally come with. Thanks.
Looking up the wrong part number then. 07-09 without headlight washers what you're looking at is 81145-50280, 81185-50281. With headlight washer is 81145-50311, 81185-50311
@@LILEVO Thanks for the response. What about the revised control arms? Are what LexusPartsNow offer genuine OEM parts or just knockoff ones branded as OEM? I appreciate the help.
@@franklin38 oem, but you should be using discountpartsmonster instead. The headlights are $80 cheaper there for the set.
@@LILEVO Oh, good to know. But I'm actually look for the control arms assemblies as well, does discountpartsmonster offer genuin OEM control arms as well for LS460?
@@franklin38 every part is oem and available
Does the Ball joint include in the control arms ?
Ball joint is part of the steering knuckle.
