    This is great! I've never paid too much attention to interior design until we were re-doing our floors and freshening up paint. Suddenly I wanted to really put it all together with purpose, instead of the hodgepodge I've always ended up with. I'm hooked. If I could go back, I'd study interior design. But your channel has definitely been one of my top go-to channels for learning and inspiration. Thank you!

    Thanks for taking the time to do this breakdown on all of the styles! I still get confused about my style because I mainly lean toward Traditional but there are elements of each style that I would actually use if I could. That makes me all confused, like what is my design style then? 😅😉 Does that make sense? Let me add this, when I look at the different styles, I see beautiful elements maybe in some of the furniture, art, architecture and I think Oh I love that!! How in the world do you find your style if you think like that about ALL of the different styles?! 😊❤️

    • @LindsayLiving
      @LindsayLiving  Před 2 lety +7

      YES! I think that's where Individualism focused styles come in - giving you the freedom to mix styles or add in contemporary elements into a traditional foundation. Styles shouldn't be limiting - and the nice thing about a lot of new styles coming out is how they incorporate elements of multiple styles. Maybe you have a primary style - traditional - and a secondary style that you layer in to vary the styling.

    Thanks Lindsay! You know I love the deep dives and your historical research is so interesting. I am working on incorporating more patterns in my home. I would love some guidance from you. Perhaps some examples of scale and color of patterns that work and don't work. I need specifics like "see this small pattern. It works with this other pattern because.....". Have a great week with your 2nd graders. It is such a sweet age!

    • @LindsayLiving

      Yes, Shelley! We love a deep dive. I love learning about topics though timelines, categories, and historical context. I would love to do a video on pattern - what a fantastic suggestion. I know you're not alone in trying to figure it all out. I learned so much working in apparel retail in my younger years, that translates SO WELL to working with pattern and color in the home. Great video idea - thanks so much! 🤗

    Thank you so much for displaying the history and connections between different styles and for defining those styles. I'm definitely a noob when it comes to figuring out what works with what spaces, and am terrible in thinking about potential for a room. Going to start small and build from there, but this was so incredibly helpful, especially your suggestions of different publications. I grew up making fun of interior designers because of how self-serving and snide, snooty, cocky and rude the few I have met have acted toward other people. It's interesting to see the profession through the lens of seeking beauty instead of seeking status.

    • @LindsayLiving
      @LindsayLiving  Před 9 měsíci

      Thanks so much for watching and for your comment. Of all the videos I've created I'm still so proud of this one. I'm so glad it was helpful! Your last sentences really resonated with me. I suppose when you mix art with business there are always people who are in it for the status, but at it's heart, interior design is art with a blueprint. Creating living spaces that improve your life through your daily exposure to what you find comfortable and beautiful.

    I love your design board! I think it would make a great poster/print for sale.
    My taste is for mid-century modern combined with a bit of Florentine ( Cafe Florian-ish) beauty. Think minimalist drum-shaded lamps combined with fancy gold-framed mirrors. They go quite well together, a transitional style I guess? I still have 4 kids at home, so money and time are considerations, and all my interior design dreams are a slow process. I do collect MCM dishes, art and glass. I love Art Deco too. This weekend I am tackling a long-overdue project: gel staining my ubiquitous 90s orangey oak cabinets to an antique walnut. The interior of Cafe Florian is my inspiration for that project.

      That is such a great idea - thanks so much for sharing your ideas. I think we all need to study and experiment with our style if we love design enough to do so. Finding an inspiration like you have done allows you to make more confident decisions in the home reno/design process. Good luck!

    I learned so much about my style preferences by looking back over clipped magazine photos over the years as well as things clipped to OneNote, mood board juxtaposition. And it helped me to come up with words that described the elements that cropped up repeatedly over the years. White window drapery was one of those repeated elements, year after year. Identifying words that describe how I want to feel in a space was also helpful. What, exactly, made me feel like a space was “fresh“ or “warm?'' And how could I achieve both of those things in the same space? To me? Because other people don’t always have the same take, even if their choices to create those things “follow the rules” or follow their hearts.

      Fantastic way of breaking the styles down, following the timelines and influences of various eras.
      Many styles seem to have blurry boundaries which, without context, are just plain confusing.
      Your painstakingly collected map zooms out enough to make sense of the shifting pieces. It even sets us up to be able to make better educated guesses when lines are not clear. Which, as you know, is a vital skill in the real world - where things don't often follow the simple convenience of a text book.
      Thank you for your late night hours, rabbit holes, sacrificial decisions, and inevitable brain bended stretching of research such as this!

      I'm so glad you enjoyed this one, Ana! Design styles can be overwhelming, especially the more you learn about them. Having a way to put them in different branches allows me to see how the branches overlap to create new styles each year. It's fun to think of design as a growing organism rather than a set of rules to follow. No matter what style you enjoy most, make sure you make it your own and stay open to the possibilities.

    • @Doomsterlobster
      @Doomsterlobster Před 2 lety

      It's important to be skeptical about the use of "modern" and "modernism" in most contexts. It's a word that's simply used to denote a break with the past from the speaker's perspective. What is dated here as "modernism" (based I guess on Alastair Ducan's book) simply refers to the departure from classical styles and their reiterations in the 1800s (i.e. those ostensibly following "classical Greek principles" as reconstructed in the Reneissance). That means everything onwards from English Arts & Crafts and pan-European art nouveau/Jugendstil - both of them far from what you'd consider "modern" or "modernist" today.
      "Modernism" as opposed to "modern" usually refers to the period somewhere around 1880s and before WWII, in most arts. In painting, modernism refers specifically to what happens after Impressionism: e.g. the three branches growing from Cezanne, van Gogh and Gauguin. In poetry, it's what happens with Baudelaire et al. into T.S. Eliot, in prose it's best exemplified by revolutionary authors like Woolf, Proust, Joyce, Musil, Mann, breaking both traditional form and traditional subject matter. "Art of art's sake" is a quintessentially modernist principle. The term doesn't really apply so well in interior design, but I guess Bauhaus would be the closest equivalent to modernISM in the field.

      Technically the first evidence of interior design was found in prehistoric human dwellings in the form of cave drawings, but Elsie de Wolfe was the first person to work as an interior designer, to perform commissioned work, and write a book on the subject, so she is considered the first "interior designer" and the inventor of the field.
