You missed my style, solarpunk! The aesthetic is very biophilic, with an emphasis on used or handmade items, sustainability and lots of plants. It spawns from a cool philosophy/literary movement too!

A lot of these feel like secondary styles. So when you're trying to find your style it seems like it'd be useful to identify a main style with a couple of supports (which is probably how fusion styles happen. it becomes really popular to pick the same supports for your main style e.g. Japandi). So maybe you like minimalism but you incorporate biophilic and Japanese design styles to support your overall minimalist aesthetic. I don't know what this would be for me exactly but it's something to think on!
Totally. Plenty of overlap. The names do get thrown around a lot though so I wanted to have a one stop shop video that included nearly everything.

Yes! I love to tell ppl to categorize in macro and micro terms. Start with a macro term, and then for more detail, pepper in the micro terms to help paint a better picture.
Lisa Holt gives these three big overarching styles (traditional, transitional and modern) and then Nick gives 50 micro styles.

This was super helpful for me! I've known that I like American Colonial, Art Deco, and Dark Academia, but it never really clicked that it's because they all favor darker colors, lots of wood, and have a weight to them. I've got a better idea of how to start visualizing my future house now.
I liked how he gave a mention to "Light Academia", too, as it fits well with the Amer Colonial and Traditional styles I favor, yet without being quite so heavy as the Dark Academia.
I think I’m four+ styles….that don’t overlap! When I was trying to decorate with the interior matching the exterior of a pre-1835 federal colonial, every weekend I’d be going thru wallpaper books at a Sherwin Williams. One Saturday, the woman who worked in the wallpaper section, said she saw me so many times, going through the books, and wondered if she could help. She brought out two books, opened the books and asked which paper I liked better. After going through pairs of books, we moved to a different section, and compared one of the first group of books, with the new one. I started seeing several papers that I liked, and she finally looked at me, and said that I just didn’t like colonial! She termed me “country casual”. After that, the selections went quickly. I am so grateful to her! 40 years later, I’d still be there every weekend

Hi Nick! You forgot: 1. Bloomsbury Group - led by Vanessa Bell (sister of Virginia Woolf) and Duncan Grant. Very eccentric with painted furniture, painted walls, painted fireplaces and painted crockery. It lightened up the post Victorian era. 2. British Aristocrat - oversized art and furniture, heavy with textiles and books, eccentric and lots of gilt. (Sometimes looks struggling - like broke Aristocrat.) 3. Native American - bigger than Southwestern because cultural for all of the entire continent - Canada, America and South America. Thanks - what a fun video! 💐 💐

The thing about Victorian style is there isn't just one Victorian style. Gothic for example, which he covered here, is one of Victorian styles popular in the mid-19th century. But you also had styles such as Neoclassical (and sub-categories Greek Revival, Egyptian Revival, etc), Louis XIV, Eastlake, Art Nouveau (which he covered here), etc. It's important to keep in mind the Victorian era covered a span of over 60 years. So, in my opinion at least, there isn't really a simple "Victorian" style. Just my two cents.
Also a book I really liked when I was younger and super into Victorian decor was "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Victoriana (A Comprehensive Guide to the Designs, Customs, and Inventions of the Victoria Era)" by Nancy Ruhling. It's not JUST interior/architectural design, but it does have a lot of info on it and I always found it fancinating. Not a deep dive on one topic, of course, but it can help you identify which aspects of Victoriania you like and then you can do more research from there. :)
This was super helpful and informative - thank you! There are two styles that I love, but didn’t see here: 1. Island style / colonial Caribbean and 2. SE Asian colonial, either French or British found all over Asia from South Asia all the way to Singapore, Malaysia, Cambodia and Vietnam. Balinese style could also be its own vibe.

I would really love if you could make videos like this for the styles that “over-lap” but focusing on their differences to help your audience develop more of an eye for interior design. They didn't teach you history of architecture styles in school?! One of the first classes I took as an interior designer was history for interior design & architecture from the stone age to the present. Took 2 classes to cover it all.

It also made me realize how euro-centric American design is and how many styles (chinoiserie, African, etc) are interpreted thru the lens of their previous colonizers aka oppressors. It’d be great if you could do a video showcasing the authentic styles of these countries
I'm thinking there is no "American" style, unless you go native American. Southwestern is probably the closest you will get to true Native American style. We are imitators of the places we came from.

I searched up interior design videos to settle an argument I was having with a friend of mine. We have two very different tastes in furniture. I love more of a modern, black sleek look and she likes more vintage, cottagecore looks. And we somehow got into an argument about how we can never room together because the two styles don't mix. And I somehow started looking for interior design videos to prove that we can mix! And that's how I ended up here, enjoying your videos on interior designing. The argument is long over but I can't stop watching LOL
I like coastal without all the fish and naval stuff. I like the color pallet and the airy look of it. i grew up in Florida, so it makes me nostalgic.

This was an excellent video. Intelligently presented thank you. But your 2023 April fools video is still my favorite.
Early American? Was very big in the postwar period. Much sturdier furniture for the family to fling themselves into without harm than Colonial. Cozy, often with a fireplace, would go well with farmhouse today. The living room armchairs, some or all in a grouping, and sofa (might be high-backed) would have dust ruffles. Honey colored wood, often. Patterned or a bright solid color upholstery. Might be an upholstery match with curtains. Probably with a big braided rug. Ran to patriotic accents like an eagle or red/white/blue. I've loved it since I first saw it on some episodes of December Bride in syndication. (Unusually, since the character Matt was an architect, the set was changed at least once a season. I got a dvd collection but that wasn't on it. The order on the dvds was mixed so the set design changes were obvious.) My mother bought a large Early American sofa on sale, probably clearanced, to put in our new home's basement rec room in the late 1970s. The house was built in the 1950s, with what must have been extremely up to the minute three colors of basement tiles, so it fit perfectly. We kept it until it fell to bits over 20 years later. I came to love that sofa. Perfect for Mom to take a nap under the afghan I inexpertly knitted for her. I hope to see that style popular again.
I wonder if Southwestern should be divided into two or more styles. The architecture is. Would the decor also be? Pueblo/Santa Fe/Northern NM Revival, Territorial Revival, Spanish Mission Revival, Pueblo Deco, etc.
Key pattern for Early American (which honestly parallels American Colonial): PLAID!!!

Nick, I think it would be cool to do a series evaluating famous movie set styles. Some of these movie sets have beautiful interior designs. The Great Gatsby for Art Deco, Lord of the Rings for Art Nouveau, etc.
How much would I have learned at university if you'd been there. Forget that I'm probably older, you are an amazing teacher, perfect blend of intelligence, interest and standard language

The only tweek I'd make to your definition of Cottagecore is that it also incorporates an element of fantasy: elves, fairies, mushrooms on everything, etc. "Cottagecore" is a relatively new form of Cottage style, and it often incorporates pastels as you said -- while the other cottage styles usually don't. This is in contrast to the more "mainstream" Cottage styles, which have been around since at least the Victorian Era. There are many sub-styles within the Cottage Style genre: English Cottage/English Country Cottage, French Cottage/French Country Cottage, Rustic, American Storybook, American Rustic, etc. So really, the term "Cottagecore" isn't interchangeable with the rest of the genre because it's a specific decor style rather than a general, "catch-all" description.

Industiral and Art Deco are SUCH A VIBE! I've seen a house with a mix of those two somewhere on the internet and I've been LUSTING after a house like that ever since.
They speak to me on a very personal level and it's a shame we don't see much Art Deco anymore.

We are slowly designing our home and I loved the breakdown and photo examples. It made it very easy for me to distinguish between different pieces I own and I am looking at. A whistle-stop tour of 50 design styles felt a little overwhelming initially. Yet somehow, by the end, I confidently identified as an Eclectic Boho Maximalist. This sounds so much better than admitting I live in a home that looks like an explosion took place in the paint factory next to a junk shop.

I thought my decorating style was Traditional/Contemporary but now I know it's actually Coastal/Transitional! That helps SO much! No wonder I couldn't find things to update my house. I now have a specific section to look. Things sometimes have gotten too hodgepodge when I've tried to make them work and it doesn't look right. Thanks Nick!
I live in a 1970s Contemporary house - cathedral ceiling, sunken living room, lots of 45° angles that intersect with vertical lines, that sort of thing. We bought it in the late ‘90s and I really wanted to pay homage to the house’s era by sticking with 1970s-ish furnishings. My husband talked me out of it, however, and we settled on furnishing the downstairs (living room, dining room, and main bedroom) in the Arts &Crafts style. Almost every major piece of furniture is faux Stickley. Textiles are all in dark green, rust, and gold colors. I even found a slate-like floor tile in those colors for the kitchen, while the rest of the downstairs has the 1970s parquet wood flooring. My husband even made a Tiffany-style stained-glass lamp in his stained-glass studio (the garage). The lamp sits on a Stickley-like end table.
What we didn’t consider at the time of decorating was how locked-in we’d be with this style. While it works extremely well with the architecture of the house, we can’t update anything without having it look…wrong. We had to replace the sofa a couple of years ago and we decided to get something more functional and comfortable than our old sofa that had wooden sides. We picked something that had an almost Art Deco aesthetic to it, with straight lines that all end in 90° curves. It’s in the same color palette, being a dark mossy green. But it looks like we just stuck an old garage-sale find in our living room.
We’re not sure what to do to update our look because of this. It feels like the Arts & Crafts furniture all has to go in order to add in anything different; nothing else fits with Arts & Crafts when it’s all in the Stickley style. Some Art Nouveau might work, but that’s too expensive for us to do right. I hate the thought of just getting rid of a whole bunch of very expensive furniture - and I mean a bunch, because we have not only tables, chairs, bed, dresser, and cedar chest in the Stickley style, but also a massive china cabinet and an even more massive entertainment center/display case piece. Any individual piece can’t be swapped out for something else without looking out-of-place. I have no idea what to do, other than just live with the same furniture until I die. At least our house looks fairly timeless, not caught up in the outdated trends of 20-30 years ago…

Basically I just really love natural/exposed furnishings with a minimalistic approach. I personally can’t stand styles more on the maximalist side of things. It’s just too overwhelming and it feels like my senses are under assault constantly.
omg idk if anyone else plays House Flipper and The Sims and stuff but this just gave me SO much inspiration for styles to decorate with, haha! So many styles I didn't even know existed, and also I now have much more clarity on the differences between a few of the really similar ones. Thank you for this, I'd LOVE indepth looks at some of these in the future! This is AMAZING.

Otherwise kitchen and living spaces are more Japandi, like having different vibes for different rooms! (however having plants and greens throughout for consistency)

I am stuck with American colonial being in an old stone Virginia farmhouse dating from 1750, completed probably around 1785. Exposed beams in the low ceiling basement, very small rooms demanding small furniture pieces, working fireplaces, original woodwork unpainted everywhere, encased winding staircases… It is unmolested, undisturbed, pretty authentic.
It is difficult to decorate because I really want cozy comfortable furniture.
The problem with American Colonial is that it is based in Jansenist Quaker iconoclast. This is the era of plainness and simplicity. No clutter, no art (which I defer to lots of art and displays of places I’ve traveled, and family memories) The problem is to look right in the house, the furniture has to be uncomfortable.😂
While I love the beauty of French provincial, and cozier English cottage and such it’s hard to do in an American Colonial.
I don’t care at all for uncomfortable furniture and stiff backed seating. I see contemporary, Bauhaus and much of that style as a descendent from the Jansenistic rigidity of early American decor.
By the way, one observation… All your choices with very few exceptions show uncomfortable furniture in every picture no matter what the style even for styles that should be fuller and soft and more comfortable, inviting. I can tell what kind of furniture you like LOL.

* Common people meaning us who care but have never had tens of thousands of dollars to drop at one time so pieces are added one by one. Maybe our homes are the cookie cutter kind with quirks we are not quite sure what to do with? For example, I'd know how to put Boho finds on a built in shelf by a TV but my home has these 12 & 18 foot long open shelves by the ceiling. I'm not one for clutter or collectables so It's intimidating and feels like miles.

Wow I can see the work that you put into assembling this video. Yes there are overlaps in styles and I like that. One thing I miss seeing is Victorian. Not the museum-like rooms of a few decades ago. More livable rooms that are still in keeping with the original principles. There are so many Victorian homes where the current owners want to show their appreciation of that style while fitting into today’s way of life.

Well I don't think I have any one style, a bit of many styles but I do love bright, airy and simple yet I love some wood and antiques. When I came of age, late 80's, I LOVED country/ farmhouse stuff including ruffled curtains, florals and blue geese motifs 😂 It's funny how our tastes change over the years

Thank you Nick for pulling this all together for us! It must have been exhausting and time consuming. Who knew there were so many styles? As a non professional I knew which photos spoke to me but never knew how to express what I liked. I’m now going to take a deeper dive into Chinoiserie, Coastal, Contemporary, French Provincial and Grand Millennial/Grandma Chic. I would have never been able to put these styles into words in a million years. I always thought I was locked into the Transitional style. Ever think of a nice, big coffee table book covering this?
