Wow what an awesome idea 💡
This is a really good podcast! Thumbs way up!
Ohh, so that's why Bron & AD looked confused when Westbrook took that one shot..
I know EXACTLY what you are talking about, but can you explain it for all those other newbs out there? 👀👀👀
You do it😂@@benjoyce8034
@@benjoyce8034 Clip? or what do i type to find it on youtube?
@@benjoyce8034 I assume its one of the times Westbook would randomly pull up from 35 feet with 40sec left in the quarter and airball for fun
The Portland game? Bc that one still doesn't make sense, especially in a 4th quarter losing momentum and a 2 on 4 break if im remembering correctly
I've always said that it isn't even a 2-for-1 because 90% of the time you get a terrible shot so you may as well turn the ball over.
What ends up happening is that the opposing team gets a quality shot and you get the last shot but don't have a full possession to try to produce a quality shot.
Some of these 2-f-1 are the most terrible shots taken, and it’s always a 3 pt.
totally. 2 bad shots instead of one good one? seems dumb. i get trying to run a quick action, but just hoisting because the clock says 33 is self-defeating.
Same i always think about this when teams chuck up a 2 for 1
It’s called a 2 for 1 because of the possessions, not the shot. You’re not guaranteed to make either, so whether you make it or not doesn’t change the fact that it’s still a 2 for 1.
Sometimes we get so caught up in doing something that we don’t stop and think why we’re doing it.
Lebron probably still remembers that game Russ went for a 2 for 1 and missed when the Lakers were up only 1 with like 30 seconds left in the 4th lmao
But people wanna defend Russ when he was a laker😂🤦🏻♂️
What Lebron is saying doesn't even apply for Westbrook. He's talking about the end of the first 3 quarters. Not doing a 2 for 1 at the end of close games should be obvious

I think LeBron would rip his hair out (figuratively) if he ever went into coaching and also why Rondo doesn’t do it. Stuff that’s trivially natural to them just completely flies over other players. He said, and I paraphrase, it burns him up when players completely forget the play straight after watching the coach draw it up ATO
Only problem with that is
That he don’t have any hair
Makes me think about the time Jordan Poole was too busy telling everyone it's his team and got this than was asking everyone what's the play😂
That's why Gretzky failed as a coach in the NHL
Not to give people an excuse. People's short term memory isn't usually that good as it is and then you add other variables to it like short attention spans, nerves, etc...
Yeah because they process things differently. That's why a lot of great players tend to be "bad" coaches cause they can't relate how some players forget things that are effortless to them.
SGA and OKC LOVE to do 2-1 last 30-40 seconds each quarter and it never ever ever ever works. It frustrates the hell out of me as a fan.

This first episode was a breath of fresh air for the basketball space. Most sports podcast or even ESPN or Undisputed are just bias narrative driven talk.

I can only imagine this conversation between you two and Hailburton... Straight nerding out on hoops!!! Love it!!!
I like how LeBron is mesmerizing by his own ability to switch up a play. Almost as if he was the self proclaimed chosen one. 😂
The 2 for 1 shot started with the Bulls! Go back and look at the 96 Bulls. They understood how to manage the clock at the ended of the 2nd quarter. They knew they had the scoring presence as well! Kerr, MJ, Pip, Kukoc and Rodman was a strategic move by Phil.
And then everybody started copying them but was more influenced by analytics saying "2 possessions over one" instead of " quick good shot"
Yeah I always felt the same way about 2for1s; always felt it was better to use the entire clock to setup a good possession and leave your opponent with less then 24 for their possession.
In the Celtics game a few days ago, both teams shot in 7 seconds everytime the clock was under a minute. They were both going for 3 shots in a minute.
For recent reference : tonight's games Dallas vs San Antonio (19/3). Last 50 seconds of the first quarter.
SPOILER:: Kyrie does work BTW, by letting the game come to him in these moments
Spoiler the earth is flat Kyrie? Or another ky?
Guys acting like he’s a genius 😂
Basically teams rush the play for a 2 for 1 which mostly doesn’t work
But the whole point is that you get an extra possession. Even if you chuck it up, you still get ANOTHER possession. Get it??

BRONNY AND BRYCE MOST LIKELY GOT MORE KNOWLEDGE OF THE GAME THAN SOME NBA PLAYERS

That is stupid though. They're not their father. Do they know more than their peers? Almost 100%. But you're really underselling the amount of knowledge that even a bad NBA player has.

The 2 for 1 doesn’t always have to be 35-40 footer. On a dead ball, if you can run a set to get a quick shot, preferably at the rim, then the odds are greater. If we’re playing percentages. Even in transition, you can advance the ball to try to get a good look at the basket. The only way it works if the opposing is trying to get a shot up within the same time frame. I see LJ POV tho. Either way can gain momentum.

How the hell this link up happen !! 😂
Damn !!
Being able to flip a play at eight is less impressive than it sounds. When players don’t understand that it speaks more to their inability to process simple information than someone that can being a genius.
100%. This applies beyond basketball, to football in particular. Stats are variable; people tend to lock into the same approach over and over and don't consider the dynamics of the game they're playing as much. So many of the best decisions have come down to the game-specific particulars--how the defense is playing, even the environment (Belichick taking the wind on a kickoff, for example)--sure, you want to maximize possessions and be aware of the clock, but not unnecessarily at the expense of getting a high-percentage look or not taking advantage of what the other team is giving you.
Love hearing this kind of basketball talk.
If you're just chucking up a 35-foot shot to get a second, rushed 35-foot shot at the end of a quarter then you are not executing a 2 for 1 properly and any coach should be irate over this approach. The idea is that you push the ball up the court to initiate the offense more quickly ("be quick but don't hurry") and execute a healthy shot attempt with less time on the front end of the execution than you do otherwise. Think of it as the opposite of slowing down the offense to take the last shot of the quarter. In ensuring you take the last shot of the quarter you often take your time initiating the offense but still need to execute effectively or you end up with a 35-foot heave at the end of the quarter here too. To suggest that throwing up terrible shots at the expense of the actual offense is the point of the 2 for 1 is idiocy. I will say that given the number of terrible, forced threes we see throughout a game it makes the idea of chucking up a 35-footer at any time just part of the offense anyway so in that sense the entire basis for criticism is unfounded. Now, perhaps teams poorly execute a 2 for 1 and it DOES end up with two unwanted shots instead of one quality shot. That is certainly something that happens, but the IDEA and GOAL of a 2 for 1 is fundamentally sound and worthwhile.
I love that these men have a platform and a voice. This is the issue with competency and logic on a vs production/numbers on a grand scale
Good point about the two for one being rooted in context. If your offence has stagnated, its better to use up the clock and try to get a good shot.

I used to do PLO at 7 years old
The best 2-for-1 is created by not winning the tip, just let the other team win the tip. That gets you the ball in the 2nd and 3rd quarter. So if you end the 1st and 2nd with the ball, you get the ball again right after. Free 2-for-1 basically. Even better, end the 1st and 2nd quarters with a 2-for-1, and get the ball to start the next quarter again. Now you just got a 3-for-1. I used to do that in NBA2k all the time.

Another bad thing about the 2 for 1 is, that bad shot usually leads to a fastbreak for the opponent and then there’s no guarantee you come down and score
Heavily competitive and strong spatial math skills. Man has a level of genius in him. Maybe not an Einstein but not everyone has that ability
Crazy that LeBron could flip a play the same year that Russel won is first ring
I’ve always thought this. You end up taking 2 bad shots and the other team gets a great possession. I’m sure the analytics argue that on average it’s better but I’d rather just continue running my offense. If you can get a good look early or fast break go for it though.
I've always felt 1 excellent look is better than 2 bad ones, which is what happens more often than not in this situation.

There is some value to what they are saying. The most intriguing part is just a throw away line about not focusing on the last 30 seconds, but rather the minute before the last thirty seconds to put yourself in a better position for the 2 for 1. However the crux of the issue is: if you average 1.1 points per possession, you better get at least .6 points on each of your 2 attempts and the two 6 second possessions you are working with are going to be pressured than the one 24 second possession you are giving your opponent.
Also JJs point at the end is stupid...if youre winning just keep winning, what if your losing? Maybe the team that is winning plays their game and yhe team that is losing needs to make adjustments or play to the clock meaning there is always a team that wants the 2 for 1. Just a bad point to finish on.
A typical 2 for 1 possession
- you'll do a god awful shot
- opponent has a full 24 seconds to work
- then you'll have 10 sec at best after a made basket
