- In today's video, I give a comprehensive overview of arguably one of the lesser known jobs in the finance industry: the job of the risk analyst. I go over things like responsibilities, hours, compensation, career trajectory and more! If you have any further questions, leave them down in the comments below and I would be happy to answer what I can!

Thank you so much for this video
Very informative video! Thank you!
Thanks! Glad you found it helpful.
Well Explained .
Just wanna say hi! Am a final year Applied Math major specialising in financial math, looking to do risk management! Not really interested in the front office roles like IB or sales and trading haha thus leaning more towards quantitative risk (Hopefully). Very insightful video into market risk! Am currently completing the FRM Lvl 1 exam tomorrow as well, what are your thoughts on it? Does it matter to an employer? What if you were evaluating a candidate wanting to do risk? Hope to see more videos on this very underappreciated side of finance!
Always a pleasure to meet a fellow Aaron! I personally don't know too much about the FRM - I'm sure it will be good to have on your resume but don't personally know too many people that have it. If I were evaluating a candidate, I'd probably look for analytical skills and a genuine interest towards financial markets because all the information can be taught on the job. Good luck!
@@aaron_yao Ah yes my name is Aaron too Haha! Thank you for your response, may we cross paths someday!
awesome! many thanks!
Love your videos man! Btw what do you think of a masters in financial engineering to get into risk? and what other options are there with that masters? Thanks!
Masters in financial engineering would definitely be useful for getting into risk. Masters in quantitative finance is also a common one that many people pursue.
Is it necessary to have a quantitative degree (like Math, Statistics) or be extremely good at math to become an entry-level risk analyst? I am interested in becoming one but I was told that a (market) risk analyst is only available for those who specialize in quant subjects and have masters in those math-related areas.
Do you know if the risk management function has any client interaction at all? or are most presentations/interactions in risk with the front office team?
The latter - your "clients" are essentially the traders/portfolio managers. Don't know about credit risk on the investment banking side though...
Hi! Quick question, would you say the job-scope of a risk manager in investment banking mirrors the ones from insurance brokers? Thanks!
Mmm doesn't seem so. Maybe closer to actuaries if you want to talk about the insurance industry?
What tools did you use on a day to day basis - Excel, Bloomberg? any programming for VaR?
Yes, mainly Excel and Bloomberg, occasionally Python. VaR is usually calculated automatically.
what would you recommend for risk analyst interviews in terms of technicals for interns/grads??
I'd recommend having knowledge about current market events and basic knowledge about options Greeks.
I'm pursuing my master's in Risk and Investment management from Queen's University Belfast, UK and will be completing this September 2023, and I'm struggling with job search for risk analyst roles in the UK. Please guide me a bit on this.
Any update man? How has it been?
@@chidianyanwu889 Hi, So far nothing has changed, UK is at it's worst right now. There are no entry level roles, and the ones that are there, are not willing to sponsor in future. I don't know what to do now. In a really bad situation right now.
what books should I read as a freshman in a bachelor of finance?
A Random Walk Down Wall Street is a great intro book to a bunch of financial concepts. All the Wiley finance books are great if you want to get deeper into a certain topic. I would highly recommend The Black Swan as another unique perspective on life and investing.
FRM designation prevelant at either JPMC or HF?
I wouldn't say so.
@@aaron_yao Was curious as to if it were equivalent demand wise on risk side as CFA on buy/sell side..ty
Do you know any recruiters agencies that specialize in Risk Management?
Not specifically but you should be able to find them with a LinkedIn search!
What about age?
Are you asking if age is a factor in hiring? If so, it isn’t!
@@aaron_yao Hey Aaron, not sure how familiar you are with Product Control, wondering if I could ask you some questions on market risk though
