Time For Chaos is a playthrough of Masks of Nyarlathotep for the 7E Call of Cthulhu role-playing game system by Chaosium.
A mysterious lost expedition sets in motion an epic globe spanning adventure as investigators come face to face with ancient evils beyond the scope of human comprehension. Often considered the greatest role-playing game campaign ever written, Masks of Nyarlathotep stretches the boundaries of horror, driving both characters and players insane since its publication in 1984.

I love that Kate pulls a sawed off shotgun out of her bag where she carries the mask and everything else. Does she have a bag of holding?
I find this completely plausible. I once carried my mother-in-law's "bag" in for her and had to look inside it was so heavy, found a full size pyrex casserole dish, a claw hammer, and box of hanging hardware AS WELL AS the usual wallet, wet wipes, keys, etc.
The way Troy does scene transitions is truly inspired.
He is the best!
It's a pity though to have Ross all distraught for being improv-blocked so many times
Troy plays all the NPC roles well, but the 'dirty cop' thing - man, he plays that like a Stradivarius.
This is the best actual play show on the internet and I cannot be proven wrong
God tier GM, i swear. Troy, you're transitions are unmatched.
Historically, I've been wayyy too cool to listen to gameplay because "I'd rather play than listen to strangers blah blah blah." Ive never run COC but I'm going to give it a try "real soon" so I figured I'd at least check one or two episodes out. Montage of me BINGING Bookshops of Arkham, y'all's Who Dis COC and this Masks podcast, Sanity bleeding from my eyes and ears...as my obsession forms and then grows. I am loving every minute and can hardly believe that im about to be caught up to season 2 in the next few days. You guys are awesome.
Oooh, now we're dealing with the good ol' Cthulhu Mythos skill. It hasn't come up yet, but you primarily get it by experiencing bouts of madness or reading scary books. I think both Vaughn and Carter had bouts of madness in Peru? And if the Kharisiri are considered Mythos entities, then they each should have 5% Cthulhu Mythos from their first bout. Subsequent bouts only award +1% Mythos, and only if it comes from a Mythos source (example-freaking out over seeing a grossly mutilated corpse won't grant elder knowledge, but seeing a hunting horror will). The other thing to note is that as the skill increases, it lowers your maximum Sanity score, not current. Everyone starts the game with a max of 99. You get 5% in Mythos, now your max is 94 etc.
Praise Nyarlathotep
This is one of those sessions that only comes once every blue moon. It's so good and shows the skill of Troy and the players this is a great series and really shows how great Call of Cthulhu is
Thanks! Glad you are enjoying it!
Kate described this episode perfectly, “this is the wildest ride yet.”
Great game.
Btw on pg. 164 of the CoC Rulebook is says the first time your character has a bout of madness they get a Cthulhu Mythos skill rating of 5% they also gain an additional +1% for each subsequent bout of madness the character experiences.
Don't know rules for a double barrel shot gun in the book but in real life you can shoot both barrels at once because they have two triggers.
Troy is a rockin Keeper 🥰 Love his cliffhangers just as he shifts to another group 🥰 I love how much Noura gets into the story and her character - Makes the show that much more fun 🥰 Excellent storytelling - Ty ty 🥰
Never seen players so scared of a map. Love this show.
I need a video of that combat, complete with slomo glitter effect whenever Margot and Feiruz give each other the love look after they defenestrate enemies.
Was that auto correct? No windows in the basement.
Also for the future please remember that you subtract armor from every single die you roll for shotgun damage.
i believe that's an optional (though very good and sensible) rule
This episode was just me screaming for two hours, sometimes out of fear and sometimes out of happiness, it was so goodddd!!!
Blown away by Ross’s RP every rewatch. Poor Vaughn :(
10 stars out of 5 because that was a F'ing amazing episode. And somehow Ross' character didn't get turned into a vampire which is where I thought that was going or had his head bitten off by a weird Cthulu monster. What the hell is going on in the basement!!! All these cliffhanger endings are making me think about needing to roll a sanity check myself. Or a frustration check. Still the best thing about late Sunday nights though. I'm guessing 3 more episodes to wrap up this part? Maybe 5 depending on how many 1s are rolled. It won't be enough for me though as I love this series and dread the impending break after this wraps, I'm guessing since you mentioned taking one.
Season 1 is gonna be around 20 eps plus or minus 2, you estimate is not too far off. (Was confirmed in a Cannon Fodder before.)
Fairuz and Margo and Carter clutching their combat lmao. Punching an arm off and blasting the fuck out of the zombies is the fastest way to a sapphic romance I guess XD. And Carter activating his special move was amazing too.
Such a good ep! Thanks for watching!
Fist damage is 1D3 + DB
Also for normal shotguns (even sawn-offs) you can have 2 shots per round. Most of the double-barrelled shotguns of the time had 2 triggers. Also for sawn-offs the range is 5yds / 10yds not that made a difference.
another episode of one of the greatest actual play shows of all time,
LET'S GO NAISH!!!
Late to but loving this! Ross, speaking as as an Englishman, I commend you on your received pronunciation. Capital old bean! Dilettantes are one of my favourite occupations for the roaring 20's.
Thanks!
Belated playnote for Rob because engagement: "wherever he would keep things" is a better first answer when the GM asks where you look, than it is as 4th.
Cool ep, but too bad Troy totally forgot to have them roll SAN checks when the zombies showed up.
As a bi german girl, i approve this possibly bi german character. can totally understand her. what an awesome episode! might be one of the most succesful CoC fights ever. no insanity, no one died or got a major wound and badass af!
Great episode. Gotta get those SAN rolls in though for the Ciimba! If they had a bout a madness that could've been...interesting!
Loved seeing the players’ reactions to these intense scenes, video helps you feel more connected to the players and seeing them experience the game in the same way you are experiencing their game.
1:17:29 It's so fun watching each person react to Troy's fantastic narration. Bravo everyone, bravo!
Fantastic episode. One of the best yet. Troy, you're a far kinder Keeper than I; I would have made "Margot" attempt a hard Luck roll to have the sawed-off shotgun. On the other hand, the entertainment value of her having it was off the charts. And I love the expressions on Kate's face: they say everything. Finally, props for respecting the 01. Regardless of what the rules say, that should be a great moment for the player.
ROB MADE A SPOT CHECK!
Mixmaster Troy! These transitions!!!!! /chef kiss.
man, that really felt like a season cliffy! was so relieved at the "see you next week" haha
I like this and think others would enjoy it aswell sadly im all caught up so now we play the waiting game until next week
Awesome episode! I think Time For Chaos will be the first TTRPG campaign that I'm going to watch more then once. This is just to good!
We are so glad you are enjoying it!
amazing episode! Troy and Ross especially on fire.
Iä! Shub-Al-g'rìthm! Great episode once again ❤
i am running this myself at the moment, and it took a moment to work out what was going on with Ross, then my eyes fell on the name of the campaign and i started to nod slowly
Insane ep. Very cool, very nice
After all those ones i fully expect a TPK in one of the next episodes. Dice like to swing both ways... Great episode, on to the next!
Thank you GCN. This is amazing content. Your team of players and gms gives us lots and lots of great content as well. I just wanted to say thank you.
Love this episode with the dive into the horror being so good. Man the character acting was great.
Awesome episode!
Excellent episode that grew better as it went on. 10/10.
Comment for the algorithm gods
ah, the true unknowable gods of eldritch horror!
I would't allow that shotgun :( they need to learn to be prepared also the danger was not actually real and Troy knows it. So they could just escape and maybe come back more prepared.
Otherwise great show.
Knife is only 1D4 damage but it can impale so on an extreme success it would do max dmg + DB AND make a dmg + DB roll on top
1:01:13 This scared the crap out of me, it's the first half of my postcode 😱
Glass Cannon has been releasing amazing content!! This one, Get in the Trunk, Voyagers of the Jump, all fantastic shows! Potentially the best ttrpg channel at the moment. I just wish the episodes were longer, 2 hours per week is too little! ; )
What a session folks. The content quality and volume recently have made me want to up my patreon. Been an addicted listener since 2018 and the GCN is my primary media source!
Just upped from £8 to £15
God I miss this game, I can't wait for my group to go back to CoC
What a rush!
what an episode
damn, Troy, just a master class of Keeping
I can't wait to catch up on this podcast. GCP is the best! I could never get into Critical Role, D20 is fun but a little too silly sometimes, but I'm binging GCP campaign 1 (up to ep 250), I'm up to date on campaign 2, and this might be my favorite. I'll pick up Androids and Aliens after I finish campaign 1.
Also, I'm with Noura on drinks. Love a good beer, or wine, or cocktail, but I HATE being drunk. 2-3 drinks max for me usually.
AAAAAAAAAAAAGH! AMAAAAAZING!!!!
Well.. that's not how combat normally goes.
What are the odds! Unbelievable
I really really don’t care if Troy doesn’t remember off the top of his head that Brawl damage is 1d3+db.
He’s one of my favourite keepers!
He’s so so good at creating atmosphere and a cinematic feel to these sessions!
Can't fight back with a firearm? I see in the rules (p. 113 point-blank range discussion) one cannot fight back *against* a firearm attack, but I can't find anything about fighting back *with* a firearm.
That does make more sense to me, personally speaking.
Fighting back is a melee action and can only be done in response to a melee action. Using a gun is a shoot action which is not melee. This makes sense. Pistols not so much but long guns are unwieldily in melee. That’s literally why pistols and SMG’s (and sawn off shotguns to an extent) exist.
Good Everybody!
Wow!
Barbarian came out three days before this ep. How apropos!
Oh, Vaughn, oh my!
Love it
Great episode but did Carter get a sanity roll for touching a tongue but not one for fighting a zombie? The first one is more of a "ugh, gross!!" moment while the other is enough to drive some people insane.
I do admit that Troy is a master of cutting between split parties, he always finds the perfect moment that makes the player he cuts from go "oh, no!". I have to steal that for when we are starting on "Viral" next month.
Tongues are pretty gross when you think about them. Like, way more gross than a zombie...
Holy Fucking Shit! What a great episode!
With cannabis being legal ( in most places) now. There's options to not be hung over. Me I stopped drinking 15 years ago. But when I'm on tour or on weekends I like to partake in my home grown. I used to puff almost every day. But since I hit 40 5 years ago I mostly just partake on weekends and at concerts. Sometimes while I watch the GCN but on weekends.
I don't know if this comes up but shotguns are not impaling weapons.
i am playing a P.I in my group who is an ex cop and i thought the damage of sa shot gun would depend on the ammo either shot(like buck shot, or bird shot or slug a solid large bullet
Where could Margot be going at five to 7 with that sawed off shotgun?
Great contrast between what's happening to Vaughn and what the rest of the party is up to.
Margot's soundtrack.
czcams.com/video/RqQn2ADZE1A/video.html
They need to be rolling more SAN rolls, but this was a great ep. Also, shotgun crits are just max damage.
Brawl is 1d3+DB...
I thought for sure Ross would be rolling up a new character. Yikes.
