- In this video, we're going to cover a huge selection of topics. It's a big one!! Firstly I'm showing the new trowel I've purchased. It looks like your standard trowel but there's something different about this one...something that makes it special.
Then I'll show you how to ''float and set" a wall using British Gypsum Bonding which is a backing plaster designed to be used for medium to low suction backgrounds. It's an amazing product to use and extremely versatile.
You just need to know the correct way to use it.
We'll also show you how to build out a window reveal so it's perfectly square and plum using a trowel, a straight edge and a level. There's no plasterboard here...we're going old school!
Then we're revealing the competition winner!!
It's going to be a good one so stay tuned!

Loving the window reveal tip with the feather edge I've been using wood for years never thought to get that out the van lol 😆 great video blaine you always deliver keep up the quality work mate 👍
Cheers matey! I really appreciate that and I'm glad it's helped! Thanks for watching my friend 👍
Another superb video as they have all been simply brilliant
Thank you so much mate. I really appreciate that!!
Hi very good instructive video, i wanted to ask you can you tile directly over bonding plaster after it has dried out for few weeks ?
Hi Blanie, Enjoyed the video ....enjoy using bonding as well just wish multi behaved itself the same way as bonding 👍
Haha this is so true mate. I hate plastering onto Bonding sometimes. It can be a nightmare!
This is a great channel. Really interesting, thanks for teaching us! My house is really old, 1800’s. The internal walls are lathe and plaster. I’ve had to remove most of it as it’s had its day. Made with coal dust. Yuck. Quick question, would you use bonding on wooden lathes after coating with PVA? The lathes are still in really good condition and it seems a shame to remove an original feature.
They wear in beautifully! after a couple of years they can get a lovely curve on them
Mine after 2 years is razor sharp. But they dink really really easily. I’ve now got a second carbon that I’m wearing in, and a permashape I’m wearing in as a back up. I bought the nela carbon but I couldn’t get on with it. Only use marrhalltowns
Im redoing someones shower enclosure. I stripped back to bare brick because the old render has blown. Should i sand cement lime the wall or bond it? I have been told by different people to use one of these two. What do you think is better? It will be tiled after this. It was plasterboarded before but i don't want to dot dab it. Thanks for the advice
superb video !! Im no plasterer but just learning. Are you suppose to scratch the bonding coat that you applied? thanks
Thank you mate...I really appreciate that!!
Great video congratulations to the addition to your family sleepless nights ahead 👍😜
Haha thank you mate!!
Hi what best spat to use for flattering my work thanks
Hi Blaine I would agree with you the old towels are the best you break them in over time 6 to 8 months it depends if you are doing sand and cement as you know yourself sand and cement is the easy way
You're bang on mate. Sand cement is the best so I'm just waiting for this weather to clear up so I can get some action in with it!! It's a bit cold for outdoor work at the moment though 😂😂
Love to have a go in the UK,it is so different than anything i have done in Australia
It's not worth it mate - I think you've got the better deal in Oz pal 🤣
@@PlasteringForBeginners -moving back to sydney soon so looking at going back to trade full time again,Plastering here in tasmania is all drywall and render is mostly done by painters which is sad
Good video mate! Did you not float the bonded wall? Just rule it off flat the skim it ? Also what side of the feather edge are you suppose to use as I see some people use the flat angle side and other people use the opposite side ?
I didn't float it mate - you don't need to keep Bonding like you do Hardwall but it is good practice. I always use the tapered edge lab - it's a lot better that way 👍
which edge are you using? Looking into buying some tools, recommendations welcome.
Great video as normal, especially the widow reveal trick. Would be interested in knowing a bit more about “ breaking in a trowel” and what that means and looks like
Thank you mate and I'll look into it. Great suggestion...thank you!
Blaine at what point would you start the skimming process, once youv'e applied the bonding coat. ?..
Is Thistle bonding and Thistle hardwall product work the same?
Blaine my friend. I regret that I have been terribly behind on your vids. I have had a busy spell, but I am finally catching up and cannot wait to dive into your latest vids I’ve missed 😁
Haha brilliant Marcus! Great having you back my friend - you've been missed 😂
Great vid mate . I always wondered why the old school boys used carbon steel . I had one once , unfortunately it got rusty and it was never the same after no matter how much I sanded it . By the way the plasterers 1 stop shop is just down the road from me and has loads of great stuff in there , I dare not go in as I will spend money 🙈
They are great Trowels pal...they just need a bit of maintenance but it really isn't much. I just wipe it down with a rag and it's good to go. Haha I bet it's brilliant in there...I was quite impressed with the service actually! Great hearing from you pal 👍
@@PlasteringForBeginners All the best to you and your family matey
We have just have walls rendered on our interior. They've been done badly and are no where near straight or true. Could o use bonding to try build things out prior to plastering?
Yes you can my friend 👍
How man coats of bonding can you get away with on a ceiling if you don’t get it smooth\flat the first couple coats ?
The problem is that your adding a lot of weight to the ceiling. It's not good so as little as possible to be honest mate.
Plastering For Beginners nice 1 fella👍 today I bonded a wall and corner bead now ready for a skim do you think bonding and feather edging is harder than skimming ? Cause I don’t think I’ve done to sad tbh only got you sides myself to thank so cheers again pal your vids and blueprint are spot on 🤝
Just got my first carbon as well mate 16x4 marshatown my dad has used them for 30+ years swears by them, I left mine in a tray of full fat coke for a day it made it go black no rust easier to maintain now I find
I think I'll give this a go myself pal. Thank you 👍
I think I'll give this a go myself pal. Thank you 👍
My first trowel was a 13in carbon marshalltown still got it, I leave it wrapped up in a rag sprayed with wd40, still use it from time to time
I bet it's a beautiful trowel. They are great when broken in!!
Need some advise. Im mixing up the bonding however its coming out very lump and grainy if i add more water its too watery if i add bonding its grainy. When i apply on the wall its very lumpy/grainy and just wont flatten out smoothly
Are you trying to get it smooth like a finishing plaster?
I use a marshalltown 16 carbon steel for skimming
Soak it in vinegar before you use it. Helps keep the rust at bay.
Amazing trowel. Took about 6 months to break my Nela Carbon in.
Thanks for the adviice mate - I'm surprised by how well it's doing with just WD40. It's not rusted at all!!
@@PlasteringForBeginners the vinegar turns the trowel black, which stops the rust spots that you get over the trowels. (Personal opinion, but I think the totally black trowel looks awesome.) 👍
Any kind of vinegar mate?
@@maxnoble523 guess so. I just used cheap malt vinegar you get from Tesco. Soak it over night when you first get a carbon. Does look very cool IMO. there might be a video on youtube somewhere of what it looks like after.
@@MrAjmorley1 yeah forced patina
Can you tell me which straight edge/feather edge you suggest please? Thanks
I like the Refina straight edges but I'll be honest they're all pretty much the same. I don't think you need to be too fussy with them pal 👍
@@PlasteringForBeginners ok thanks for that and thanks for getting back to me
Leave it in water over night two days of you can, will go black, done 👌🏻 out the box those trowels are beaut 👍🏻
Cheers matey - great tip!!
@@PlasteringForBeginners no worries. Will still rust slightly but not if your using it most days 👌🏻
how do you get on with just the combo van mate, ive got a custom and still find it not big enough some days lol
Doesn’t matter what you got mate it’ll never be big enough ;)
I love it mate but I've never had a big van to be honest so it's all I know. I'm sure if I stepped up then I'd feel the pinch ha?
I was wondering about these carbon trowells vs steels today today
They are good but just need a bit if maintenance!
They are good but just need a bit if maintenance!
Congratulations, you tired lol. Fella do you ever nip the corners off your new trowels to help with leaving lines behind or do you use your new trowels for just putting on. Great video.
Haha she's sleeping better now but it was graft at the beginning ha!! Yeah I usually do and I will with this one - it's a bit harsh at the moment so I'll be grinding it down matey.
Did you unibond the walls first??👍
I’ve just plastered a wall about 20’ long 9’ high which used to be 2 rooms. Where the dividing wall was taken down the two walls which I was making into one both tapered off to either end of the room leaving a high point in the middle of the wall. I started off by using a sand cement render at either end of the wall to build up but it was so far out that i started using a silicone render and after a few coats of that the wall was still out so I used a hard wall bonding and in some places the bonding coat must be 20mm thick. It’s a kitchen and the wall is going to take worktops and cabinets so needed to be straight and plum. I didn’t want to dot and dab as it’s going to be tiled and I don’t like the thought of tiling onto plasterboard. What would you have done in a situation like that. I just think that with that much bonding the wall is a bit ‘soft’.
Batten and Hardibacker board?!?
@@Brown969 yeah. Or dot and dabbed some hardibacker? I was fighting for space in there too so I didn’t want to batten. Didn’t think of using hardibacker boards.
I probably would have dot and dabbed to bring it out to a point and then applied solid plaster on top to give it the thickness. That's what I did have done pal 👍
@@PlasteringForBeginners yeah. I was there for ages. Put about 10 bags of sand on it, 6 bags of silicone and finished it off with about 6 bags of bonding and just left it as that for the moment. It’s got about half a ton of plaster on it. If you cut through it , it’s like some liquorice all sort
Your video went into slow-mo at 14:13..... then I see the name John Connor ... I'm worried SkyNet now !!!!
God... just seen that!! I don't know how that's happened! Sorry guys
Every though 😂
Oh God I just got to the end and noticed too Blaine. I thought I was losing the plot 🤣🤣 I’m dying at John Connor!
Buy some Diamond hand pads their great for cleaning trowels and removing rust. 👍
Ohhh I'll look into that. Never heard of them! Sounds great. Thanks pal 👍
Ohhh I'll look into that. Never heard of them! Sounds great. Thanks pal 👍
Why did you not key the bonding, for the finish coat.
You don't have to key Bonding like you do Hardwall but it is good practice I suppose. It was also a thin coat so some areas wouldn't have scratched.
Look after your tool’s they’ll look after you 👌🏻
So true!!
Random question but the answers I've gotten have been mixed 🤔 a wall that's had the tiles taken off but are putting tiles back on, would you bond to get flat then tile or...? Loving the vids as ever annnnd look at that lil cutie (not you blaine sorry 😂) her eyes too 😍
Hello Zara, how's it going? Great hearing from you! It's a tough one to be honest. People say that because Bonding absorbs moisture so it's not the best background to work with in a bathroom. I always plaster the Bonding to cover my back and on a side note, it's a lot nicer to tile when skimmed smooth and flat! So id say cover your back and skim it 👍
Ha thank you so much. She's a real gem!! Good as gold
@@PlasteringForBeginners cheers mate, I thought that and then got told I'd be making work for myself but surely it's logical lol. God knows!
Bless her!! Happy for ya both :)
Congratulations on the birth of your baby mate, now the stress begins 😂
Haha thank you mate. I really appreciate that!!
What's the difference between multi finish and Bonding coat? Just a scam?
After 20+ years of Marshall Town i switched to refina trowels and was getting tired of trying to break them in. Personally think the steels to thick. Went back to the MT permashape in November miles better trowels. Got a 20" carbon MT I've had for 20 years which I use for large areas leaves a beautiful finish.
Marshaltown are very hard to beat - I'm still wondering if I've made the right choice ha!
Marshaltown are very hard to beat - I'm still wondering if I've made the right choice ha!
When I first started in the late 80's all the spreads had tyzac trowels coz they were British made.
you know the WD in WD40 sands for 'water displacement'. no need to get the trowel super dry before using WD40
The pads will actually brake the new trowel in quicker 😉
Have you tried putting a forced patina on a carbon pal? Soak it over night in a solution of warm coke and vinegar and the next day the trowel is black and stops orange rust forming.....
I thought about it and I'm still debating it...I might do a video on it - the only reason I haven't is because I just left my last trowel and it was fine. We'll see but thanks for the idea pal. I really appreciate it 👍
@@PlasteringForBeginners how did you find the trowel pal? I won a nela premium but didnt like that the blade was completely flat, not pre-worn at all.... Ended up selling it as it would have taken along long time to break in.....
💯👍👍
👍👍
You wanna soak it in vinegar mate and force the patina covering - will go black. Then wd40 and keep trowel dry
If you can get hold of Napier Gun oil spray that has vp90 will protect from rust
That’s a great tip. Cheers mate - all the best!
@@PlasteringForBeginners you welcome
Is that Nela the 14 or the 16 inch Blaine ?
14" matey
Whys is some bonding grey?
It just depends where it's mined mate. It doesn't affect performance
Do u pva before bonding please reply
Yes you should.
i would blue grit on old tile walls just my opinion
Recently hardwall over old walls, betwkontact before and pva after hardwall dry nd just bubbles everywhere even when troweled up any ideas?
@@danielturner5048 plastic trowel might help to lose the bubbles then hard trowel when its nearly dry with steel float
Any reason why they appear so annoying!
What was that at 12:15?😄 WD- FARTY🤣
14:10 till 17:30 is all in slo-mo!
Sorry pal...the video messed up!!
When you get bored doing that to that trowel i'll buy it off you for a fiver and pay the postage to Essex. i love a rusty trowel.
Haha I'm not getting rid of it yet pal!
Noooooo...! I didn’t win, gutted 😞 lol
Sorry pal!!
@@PlasteringForBeginners its all good, just don’t stop making video’s
John Conner has been terminated.
Hahaha that's so funny! I never even thought about that 😂😂
Don't wd40 your trowel the plaster will blister next set.
Why not use plasrerboards....couple hours job done perfect flat...after bonding u still need to plaster...cuz is big NO NO NO ! tile directlly over bonding😲
Yeah the Binding was skimmed but it was a small room and it would have shrunk it down even more with dry-lining. Bonding and skim was the best choice for this one 👍
👍
