- preparation for plastering is most important thing for the best job possible the better the prep the easier and better results you will have, on this video I not only show you how to prepare walls for skimming / reskimming but I show 2 ways and explained all the preparation step by step. It could be as bonding can slump mate but if mixed nice sometimes get away with 1 pass

Would add it for exterior or if it was a tanking coat you could add some
Trying to do this now. The old plaster is lime, but wallpaper tore the skim coat off, do I need to skim it in lime mud/putty or joint compound/regular plaster?
if just a patch you should be able to patch with any of those but if wanting to keep to lime use the lime :)
Great video! Guess who has just used bonding and pva on the inside of an external cavity wall. I hope I don't get any damp in there.
If it's got a cavity it should be ok .
@@ianturner8459 thanks Ian. It was my first attempt at plastering and it's had three coats of pva. I'd be gutted if damp comes through!

What method would you prefer? I'd rather mix something out of one bag than use S&C, but maybe depends on the background?
Again if its same day and no risk of damp bonding and then you can get it skimmed and done , again the other hand i do think sand and cement is more long-term and solid but yes its next day to reskim
In the video you said you don't want sbr to dry before you skim over it so what can you do when it's dried and turned to rubber.
Pva I think it's best to go over sbr while it's wet as it will bond together
@@macplastering Put neat PVA over the sbr
@@hardworker8030 depends on the pva and if the sbr has killed all or most the suction I would tend to opt for scud coat but depends on how tidy I need to be

I'm wondering if you could give me some advice as I was removing a box in my bathroom and a 20"x16" patch of old plaster came off the wall so I need to patch it but I'm not sure what's the best way to do it.
1, I'm going over red brick so I will be using sand and cement but do I need to add any plasticiser or anything else to the mix.
2, The old plaster is very crumbly so do I need to seal it with pva or sbr.
3, Before I apply the sand and cement can I wet the bricks with water or should I use pva or sbr.
4, The thickness needs to be about 30mm so what thickness should the first coat be.
5, As it's only a small patch what tub would you use to measure the amount of sand and cement I need because I want to make sure I have enough made up but I don't want to make to much up only to throw it away.
Great qustions if its just small I would do similar to this video to build out then skim it in if small I would mix a few handfuls possibly ask for a damaged or busted bag you might get cheaper or if you know a plaster ir builder as for a 1/4 bag if they have some... we have a few other good videos on patching up red brick and patching general that would be good for you to watch
@@macplastering In another of you're videos you mentioned you added larsen plasticiser but we cannot buy this so do you know of any other good brands. Can you tell me how thick you would go on the first coat because I was thinking of doing my fist coat at 15mm then applying the second coat at 15mm but does this sound to thick.
How deep is the patch ?
Loads of other brands such as feb , bostic ,everbuild ,sika like in this link amzn.to/3LC1Kh1 again read the labels we put very little in just enough to help the stuff flow better you don't need much for example some go at a rate of plasticising required, or 2.5 lire per 200 litre drum of water so that is a lot of water most times i put a cap or 2 full in per 3 gallon bucket of water

I always put cement in me bonding stop it drinking and goes off like a rocket so I can skim within a hour
True man it dose but just avoid tat myself as a little risky so just always mix pure or if needed a little speedyskim sachet

3 and 1 cement is far too strong going on old bricks next to lime it will crack plus you should not put anything on bricks other than water
A very weak pva mix is ok ...just enough to kill any dust . How many spreads don't understand that suction is the plasterers freind .

worked out 100% here mate but i hear you it can hair line around the edges, done loads where we used sbr and always came off a great job water on these old dry brick wont hold back suction very well at all like for example the video shows how they still sucked in after been sbr
@@macplastering you should always do a scratch coat first on old bricks that's what controls the suction
How long should you leave sand and cement before plastering over it
Some say weeks but on site most leave it a day or 2 as long as it has set hard mate
