  • Here’s my coverage from my weekend at NCM, sadly it ended early and not by my hands. Seems to be mostly cosmetic damage luckily but we will see how it unfolds.

    Damn…that sucks. You took it well and kudos to you.
    I instruct and this is inexcusable. First, the instructor looked like a total amateur trying to catch the slide. Second, instructors need to be patient and find a way to instruct people without driving a student’s car.
    As an instructor for 10 years, I’ve only driven a student’s car twice. Once because he begged me all weekend. The other was at COTA and wasn’t sure if there was an issue with the car or if it was the driver. I drove extremely cautious both times. Didn’t enjoy it at all.

    No fun to end a weekend like that! Bent metal does happen but it shouldn't like this. An instructors role is to give you guidance on how to be safe and understand the track day rules. A driver coach tells and shows you how to compete and drive fast. @@TheVCRoflcopter super sad to see S take a beating like that :(. Its 3 instructors in total that drove your car right? In my opinion the 2nd guy was NOT good either. The guy with black helmet. Also the bloke who crashed your S, I think main problem asap I can see with him is his sitting position. Its strange with S but due to 50/50 weight distribution and short wheel base you can feel a lot of feedback from the car itself while taking corners, even under breaking you can feel the car rotate ever so slightly with you, thus its very important how far in/back you are to get that feedback from the car dialled-in for you as a driver. 2nd dude was correcting all the time as he was sliding a bit you can definitely see that around 5:54-5:58 mark.
      Also its super clear you can't flat out the apex the bloke crashed at, it literally catapulted the car, I can tell the right rear wheel lifted, lost all the tractions, the RPM spiked. I won't criticize his reactions times etc, cause no-one ever expects to crash.. but if something like that happens to you, the split second you feel/see the world turning upside down, you lift the throttle for a split second and your next split seconds should be, decision making process do I floor it back again to recover or to I hold off the power and let it recover(if recovery is even the case). I think had he lifted the throttle did sharp left and hit it again for power, he had potential chances of saving it from hitting the wall. Don't the instructors there have the the cars available to them to show you around the track and teach you the corners? I would be super worried letting anyone drive S or my car in general. It takes some time to learn any car just surprised these dudes do it like that ..
      Hope you get it fixed and enjoy many happy days with it!

    Technically the instructor doesn't have to pay a penny. But if he's willing to pay it but say he refuses to after seeing the bill. You can take him to court and go from there. The instructor should know better to dial it down.
    Next time buy HPDE insurance, Lockton Motorsport HPDE Insurance or Hagerty HPDE Insurance. It covers both driver and instructor if somthing was to happen.

    At least now the tremendous driving skills of these supposed instructors are on full display for all to see. ignoring for now the lack of heal toe ,what's with all the down shifting? That's not a sequential. Brake, downshift to desired gear and go. Great to hear that you had a good time in spite off. My suggestion would be to go with another group that has some real instructors that can help instead of showcasing their supposed skills.

      @@TheVCRoflcopter Okay, to practice without risk you can practice rolling onto the throttle when coming to a stop on the street. Light turns red, stab clutch, and just practice hitting your target with the throttle while you brake. You can also do it when stopped, just hold the brake and blip the throttle at a stop. Just program the muscle memory.
      Then once that feels boring and useless, start adding in the gear changes on the way to the stop. Once you nail that, start practicing it with skipping gears. For example, if you're deep into the brakes in fifth, wanting to end up in third you can delay the downshift and just target third. If you match it properly there's no extra strain on the synchronizes.

      You drove well within your limits, and it looks like you learned a lot. You seemed so excited to finally be out there.

    • @jsternberg
      @jsternberg Před 3 lety +1

      Another way to practice rev-matching/heel and toe: drive down the road at a steady speed. Put the clutch in and blip the throttle. Select the next lower gear and let off the clutch.
      The goal is to rev the motor to where it will be in the lower gear. Ie: Say at 40 mph in 5th gear, you're at 2,000 RPM, and 3,000 in 4th. Rev the engine to 3,000 select 4th and let off the clutch. You'll know you did it right when the car doesn't shutter or buck when you let off the clutch.
      When you master that, you can move to heel and toe: which is the same thing, but you're braking and blipping the throttle at the same time.

    Unfortunately, the term "instructor' is extremely loose in the hpde/track day world. Too often I see the blind leading the blind. If this guy is supposed to have been setting an example for you, he should not sending your car over kerbs, over a crest, on throttle. Just that short clip is enough to tell me he is operating way above what he is capable of. Sorry for your car getting shunted. Be extremely wary of anyone driving your car. If the person that is supposed to be instructing you cannot be talking the whole time and explaining what they are doing, they do not have the capacity to instruct and driving too quickly.
