      I wonder if it just means they expect to destroy hundreds of them. XD - Who knows if this one is way cheaper to make and maintain, they could push boundaries further, but also increase risk, thus perhaps have accounted for total destruction, needing to number them for reference. - It would be extremely convenient to see the number immediately in any recording and also for logging. - "001 was picking a fight with 101 again today. Ability to turn legs and torso so the robot can turn 180 degrees without moving from site is very interesting. Their long time background trying to make an hydraulic robot clearly clarified them the limitations of hydraulic so they are now taking profit of what electric actuators can do, like 360 turns. Amazing they are the first who notice that while other companies are building electric humanoid robots since long time ago.

    • @Flyingwigs
      @Flyingwigs Před 14 dny +33

      If you look at their legacy robots, they started with gas powered hydraulic systems and progressed from there. In high load applications actuators were not up to the task yet, they eventually used them in the dog robots, but with Atlas the speed and load balancing were probably easier with hydraulics. There's likely more limitations with the new Atlas because of being strictly electric, but there's benefits as well like efficiency.

    • @PiscatorLager
      @PiscatorLager Před 14 dny +11

    Ooh...so humanoids could be a temporary thing because factories as currently built are designed for humans. But in the not so far future, we may be building "factories" designed exclusively for robots, in order to eliminate the need for humanoids in that space.
    I put factories in quotes because once you eliminate the need to design for humans, it opens up an enormous range of installations for which specifically designed robots are the only occupants - they never need to eat, use the restroom, answer their personal phone, or leave; they can be purpose-built to provide functionality no human could achieve. No windows, no stairs, elevators actuated by wifi links instead of buttons or speech, spaces with incredible clutter that no human could negotiate...

I don't think humanoids are going to be nearly as dangerous as people make them. My one worry is how humans will act towards them. I already have seen people steal, manipulate, destroy scooters and things like that put in the public eyes. I have no doubt people will try to create problems on purpose to make these machines out to be damming. However the one thing we have problems with is the loss of jobs factors created by these robots. There needs to be several people working on a balance for this issue. Where are we going to come up with space for all the humans laid off because of this. Still I am excited for a future with these machines doing jobs in the public eyes.

    @CalifornianViking Před 14 dny +1

    First, this is impressive work from Boston Dynamics again.
    Second, i have mixed feelings about the humanoid shape, and BD clearly feels the same despite the messaging.
    It is a huge mistake to build a robot that has the same capabilities and limitations as humans, which is what a humanoid robot is.
    This robot goes beyond humanoid with its grippers and 360-degree joints, but why stop there?
    Why not put cameras all the way around the head? Then it would not have to rotate its head. An eye is expensive, but a camera is not. Why limitations the cameras to the head? Why not cameras on the feet or grippers? Same with other sensors such as microphones.
    Why not wheels on its feet? This way it could roll fast on flat surfaces (99% of the time) and use its legs on rugged terrains and stairs.
    Why not have telescopic arms? What about small detachable robots that could take off from the mother robot and explore inaccessible spaces. Why not three or four arms, or three legs?
    All these suggestions seem obvious, but they make the robot less human. It is important to not be limited by the humanoid shape.
    Let's not forget that the most commercially successful Boston Dynamics robot is a four-legged creature, not a humanoid. Dogoid?

While the Teslabot jumped leaps and bounds in just a couple of years. So to see this version of the Atlas robot, is pretty impressive. I would love to see more demonstrations though. It’s almost like the robotic companies don’t want to give you too much all at once. Whether it’s because the robot is limited, or they want to tease the public.

    The problem I see is strength. Atlas was hydraulic for a reason. That is what allows the robot to jump. This baby does not have a lot of space for a battery, so I don't know how strong is going to be. But it's amazingly dextrous and has a formidable equilibrium.

    Boston Dynamics does it again. Bringing to reality the most terrifying robots from Hollywood fantasy. While I'm impressed at the technology, I'm unsettled by the morbid and unnatural why it's limbs twist. Reminded me immediately of the T-1000 morphing front to back rather than turning around.

    I'm wondering what the antenna is for. Is the processing all onboard or is it communicating with a standalone processor?

    It looks much more compact than Atlas.
    I sort of like the idea of using a hybrid power system. I know that early iterations of Boston Dynamic systems used internal combustion engines. They were quite loud. If they simply put a nice quiet exhaust like they do for the average car, the noise wouldn't be too loud. I know battery tech has made leaps and bounds. Cordless tools are awesome now. That said, they are still way behind the energy density of gasoline.
    Imagine a 50 Horse Power engine powering a walking robot. You know it won't be long before they are used to kill on the battlefield.

    They need to work on making it quieter and it needs the ability to swivel its hips from side to side for a more natural walk and stability.

      “More natural walk?” I just watched it make some movements that humans cannot do.

    I was actually really shocked when I read "atlas got retired"... and this one... I love how it is able to move =D I wished, I could do that too! And on the back "001" XD I gave my smartphone that name +two letters in networks as a stupid joke.

    This thing would be super scary powered by the latest AI where it could just scan anyone and know everything about them combined with freaky Terminator meets Pennywise movements. The world in the future is gonna be an interesting place.
