    00:00 How to tie the formal Ascot Introduction
    Learn how to tie a formal daywear ascot which is also known as the cravat. It’s an item with a very vintage aesthetic and it’s particularly popular in Britain. We can still see worn for weddings, or at Royal Ascot when people wear morning wear with a top hat and a proper type Ascot.
    02:31 Tie An Ascot The Popular Way
    First, find the label in the middle of the formal ascot and place it firmly against the back of your neck.
    Second, you don't want both sides to be at the same length so you pull on the right side until it's about 4 to 5 inches longer which is about 10 to 12 and a half centimeters. Ideally, you want the formal ascot to be very wide on the left side and very slim on the right side.
    Now you take the slim end from the right, fold it diagonally over the left, with your left hand take the part that you just fold it over and bring it back to the original side, pull it a little snug.
    Now again, bring that end that you just brought to the right and fold it over once more around to create what will be the knot.
    Now with your left hand, you take the tip go back behind and push it up from the back so it comes out on top.
    Pull a little bit so your knot tightens up a little bit. Just like a regular four in hand knot, you take the tip now and push it through the hole that you just created.
    Ideally, you want to pull up and push up that knot a little bit so you create some wrinkles and so it doesn't look like a regular necktie. You'll also notice it's much bigger and that's okay.
    Once you've done that, simply pull on the long end in the back and adjust the knot until it sits snugly against your collar. Ss you can see, the front end is much shorter than the back end and it looks kind of odd, however, you only wear a formal Ascot with a formal waistcoat or a vest.
    So as a final step, you simply have to tuck it into your vest and it looks great. Voila! the popular way to tie a formal Ascot. If you're not wearing it at the end of the day, simply unravel the knot in the opposite way you tied it which means you pull through the front part first and unwind it, very simple.
    05:46 Tie An Ascot The Popular Way The Traditional Way
    First, locate the label in the middle of the formal Ascot and place it firmly against your shirt collar.
    Once again, you pull the right side slightly longer about three to four inches or seven and a half to 10 centimeters.
    Now the right side is folded over the left side and then brought up through the hole that you just created in the back.
    Now the part that you just pull through should be in your right hand and the other part should hang straight down.
    Now you take the part that just hangs down with your left hand and point it to your right. Subsequently, you take the piece in your right hand and you just pull through and fold it over so now it points downwards.
    Once you're done with that, you take the point that hangs down vertically and bring it up through the loop you just created from underneath.
    Once we got it through the hole, you pull firmly on both ends of the formal ascot. You can adjust the knot a little bit and you can see it creates a horizontal knot with some wrinkles. Now ideally, you want to take the item on the left and have it point to the right and the item from the right point over to the left. Basically, the two ends cross each other.
    Now that you have folded over both ends in an X shape, you can tuck them into your waistcoat, keep adjusting until you like the look.

    As far as I know you're actually not allowed to wear a cravat even formally at Ascot, it has to be a standard long blade tie and the same goes for frock coats which I think is a shame. At weddings people normally wear a 'rouched' cravat with a four in hand knot but they're usually pre-tied...

    • @zoukatron
      @zoukatron Před 6 lety +5

      Frock coats haven't been a standard part of morning dress since the early 20th century though. Whilst I do prefer to adhere to the "strict" traditions of modern morning dress (even if saying such a thing is contradictory), I do recognise that the nice things about weddings is that the couple can essentially do away with traditional dress codes and make up their own (at their own risk of course). It's a shame that those who don't know morning dress well end up with bad rented ensembles, featuring the pre-tied ruches you mention, foisted upon them.

    I'm going to have to go against you here. If you try to dress like this to the Royal Ascot, or more specifically to the Royal Enclosure, which requires morning dress, you might not get in. A regular tie is required. Whilst it is true to say that cravats are popular in the UK, they are only popular as part of hired ensembles, usually with matching cheap silk waistcoats and pocket squares. Any time to see someone wearing morning dress well here, they are wearing a turn-down collar and regular neck tie. Cravats are just outdated now. Having said that, good job showing the typical knots.

    • @gentlemansgazette
      @gentlemansgazette  Před 6 lety +19

      You are right, they changed their dress code. Here is the one for Gentlemen in 2017
      www.ascot.co.uk/sites/default/files/Final%20Royal%20Ascot%20Style%20Guide%202017.pdf
      Gentlemen are kindly reminded that it is a
      requirement to wear either black or grey
      morning dress which must include: • A waistcoat and tie (no cravats) • A black or grey top hat • Black shoes
      A gentleman may remove his top hat within a
      restaurant, a private box, a private club or that
      facility’s terrace, balcony or garden. Hats may
      also be removed within any enclosed external
      seating area within the Royal Enclosure Garden.
      The customisation of top hats (with, for
      example, coloured ribbons or bands) is not
      permitted in the Royal Enclosure

      Do you not think it is odd that they would simply ban men from wearing cravats at Ascot? I find it very odd and self defeating. So much for England being the home of sartorial elegance... What needs to happen is for notable royalty such as Prince Charles to wear a cravat to Ascot, and they would most likely overturn that ban. I doubt that they would dare turn him away!

    • @zoukatron
      @zoukatron Před 6 lety

      That depends on whether you consider cravats to be an example of the height of sartorial elegance within modern morning dress. I, for one, do not. Many others agree, which is why it's not part of morning dress at events like this anymore. I personally think that a cravat does look too dated now, same goes for the winged collar in this case. And don't expect the Royals to bring the cravat back into use, the general pattern has been that the British royal family has been at the forefront of leading formal wear to ever more casual forms.

      Wearing a stroller and morning dress are very different things. Every component of a stroller outfit can be seen in informal outfits (assuming the traditional definition of informal - i.e. lounge suit or anything less formal)... wearing a morning coat will change it into a costume in most people's eyes if it's not required.
