Tony Hadley reveals his massive Live Aid regret: "It was a huge mistake"

  • #TonyHadley chats to Gold's David Andrews about #SpandauBallet and his amazing career!
Tony Hadley had one of the most distinctive voices of the 1980s.
As lead singer of Spandau Ballet, Tony Hadley ruled the charts around the world with hits like 'True', 'Through the Barricades', and the brilliantly-titled (if you ask us) 'Gold'.
However, Tony revealed to Gold that he wasn't actually that impressed with perhaps their biggest ever hit 'True', and didn't think it would do that well.
Tony will be going out on tour this December with fellow synthpop legends Culture Club and Heaven 17.

The band were in Maestro's in Glasgow a few days, or maybe the night that they reached number one with "True". Except Tony Hadley, who, we were told, was back in the hotel, "taking care of his voice". So he ain't lying on that count. Must have took a lot of willpower that. He missed a great "stay behind". The manager of the club was on holiday and his assistant was, shall we say, a bit more lax about things. The other band members were all sound, paid for their drinks, didn't act like prima donnas, no minders or nothing like that. Good luck to them.

I was just standing in the square with a couple of friends, deciding where we were going next, when I looked over and about 50 yards away saw him. I said to my mates, is that Tony Hadley over there? Them being 10 years younger than me had no idea who I was talking about. But anyway, Tony must've heard me, so he came wandering over to me and just started chatting away like we were long-time friends. I don't get star struck, I've met loadsa "stars" in my time, but I was a little bit gobsmacked, just cos he was so lovely and chatty, asking what we were doing, were we having a nice time, why he was there and was just doing a bit of shopping himself. I liked Spandau back in the 80's and some of their songs, but can't say I was ever a fan particularly, but I turned into a Tony fan that day. What an absolutely lovely guy. He had no need to come and chat, he could've just gone about his day, but he made a point of coming over. It made my weekend.

Never a fan of his band but I do like him. He’s a ‘punter’ & remember him on a reality tv show that took a few former 80’s pop stars to the USA - He was totally cool & when one dude had a deva meltdown…he really tried to calm him down & show him they were all having a great time getting paid to have a jolly !

@@beefchops1400 its didn't though. He had money from having hits with The Rats. Later he might have made some deal that made him money, like he bought the production company Planet 24 that makes the big brekkie, but I think hos deals tend to be later in life. But there are some weird things going on around him for sure, hes been unclucy with his family. But all thats more sad than anything. He seems to have lost all females in his life and that's not exactly what you'd wish on anyone.
