Spandau Ballet's Tony Hadley: I thought 'True' would flop! - Full Interview
Former #SpandauBallet singer #TonyHadley chats with Gold's David Andrews about his career and upcoming tour with Culture Club!
Tony Hadley had one of the most distinctive voices of the 1980s.
As lead singer of Spandau Ballet, Tony Hadley ruled the charts around the world with hits like 'True', 'Through the Barricades', and the brilliantly-titled (if you ask us) 'Gold'.
However, Tony revealed to Gold that he wasn't actually that impressed with perhaps their biggest ever hit 'True', and didn't think it would do that well.
Tony also opened up about Spandau's triumphant performance at Live Aid in 1985, revealing that he's never watched it back and wishes they did it differently.
Tony will be going out on tour this December with fellow synthpop legends Culture Club and Heaven 17.

They played the songs way too fast that day . Lost the groove as a result
Tony Hadley wearing leather suit on a sweltering hot day, major mistake at Live Aid
Deus abençoe 🙏
this is clickbait.he didnt say what a huge mistake it wwas to play live aid only that he didnt play one song,"gold" come on !!
Saw him at butlins this year absolutely fantastic
💛💛💛💛💛🧔♂️👱🏻♀️🙎🏼♀️🙍🏻♀️🙎🏼♀️🙍🏼 🏠 "Family"😊
I never ever believe that he never watched his own live aid gig!!!
I met Tony whilst on a weekend trip to Rotterdam about 15-20 years ago. I was just standing in the square with a couple of friends, deciding where we were going next, when I looked over and about 50 yards away saw him. I said to my mates, is that Tony Hadley over there? Them being 10 years younger than me had no idea who I was talking about. But anyway, Tony must've heard me, so he came wandering over to me and just started chatting away like we were long-time friends. I don't get star struck, I've met loadsa "stars" in my time, but I was a little bit gobsmacked, just cos he was so lovely and chatty, asking what we were doing, were we having a nice time, why he was there and was just doing a bit of shopping himself. I liked Spandau back in the 80's and some of their songs, but can't say I was ever a fan particularly, but I turned into a Tony fan that day. What an absolutely lovely guy. He had no need to come and chat, he could've just gone about his day, but he made a point of coming over. It made my weekend.
Here again...his son is nothing like Paul I hoped he would look like his father but nope 😮
My favourite is Lonely Highway by Tony Hadley
Linda was Paul’s true love, and they made the perfect match, she loved music just as much as Paul did,R.I.P. Linda McCartney ❤☦️🙏🏼
Bonita familia
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Live Aid was a con ....all that money raised to help Africa . .-and they all end up coming here and stealing or houses . !
Did you actually read what I wrote? It is clearly clickbait TO YOU. Not to me. End of the story.
Typically misleading title
Fawlty without Basil is baseball without the ball
Just bought Heart like a Sky, been playing it for the last week. Memories of a young man.
LOVE❤
'Only When You Leave' is one of my favourite Spandau songs not 'Gold' or 'True'. The vocals on earlier songs like 'To Cut a Long Story Short', Chant No 1, Musclebound and Glow when his voice was as he said 'harder' were phenomal. The sound of the 80's 🥳
I'm so grateful that I was in my 20's right through the 80's. Best bands ever, best music ever, best time ever. 🎉🥳🍾🎈👯
Tony was quite simply in the top 5 of best singers during the 80s What a nice guy too !
Being one of the best singers during the worst decade in the history of popular music isn't really saying much.
@@philsurtees You've gone to the effort of replying, yet you've said f##k all
Absolutely love Tony, comes across as a real gent and he's still one of the great voices of the 80s.
Still lovely..what a talent ❤
Should have let that guitar solo ...
hes still handsome just like in the 80s
Cher is very gold singer😊
I’d give anything to hear those early prog jams.
Many Congratulations to Barry and Linda for 53, almost 54 years of marriage!!
Misleading headline ... come on guys!! Tony regretted not playing the song "Gold." The band LOVED playing Live Aid.
Hi all the are, I,m From Russia, and we, Russians, very very loved Slade with from 1970s time. Lee, Holder - ❤🎉
CLICKBAIT. UNSUBBED. FACE FOR RADIO
It's not really true though.
Karaoke band....... that's what they were, but they wern't the only ones of that time, give him his due, he was a pretty decent singer...just happened to be with a bunch of musicians who were totally useless
Let me correct you: he IS a fantastic singer, and at least Gary Kemp and Steve Norman were also talented.
So lucky I grew up in the era of bands and the big live performance. 12 of the 20 top grossing tours of all time were performed by bands that peaked in the 1980s and 1990s. Apart from Taylor Swift and her army of fans, nobody of the current genration really commands huge crowds these days. It's all digested on youtube and on people's phones. There are not even bands any more - they are all solo performers - mostly with a young female teen fan base. When was the last time a band formed since 2000 (that's 25 years ago!) dominated the charts? I can't think of one.
Lindo casal. Envelheceram juntos
True - The end of Spandau Ballet for me. The first 2 albums were and remain GENIUS!
They should off got a bigger presenter to speak to Tony
❤how cool is this!?🎉
She's so beautiful
Paul McCartney's best song. It's so heartfelt.
Barry married Linda, in part, because she looked like his sister. He should write his memoires. Very interesting family.
Paul é um Gênio!!!
Beautiful Couple God bless ❤❤🎉🎉
For you and yfour wife ❤🌹🌹
Jane
One of the uks best male vocalists. Strong clear vocals.
I knew his dad quite well but I lost touch with him when I left the UK for a new life in Australia in 1986...Now because I'm older I realise that I should have kept in touch because we grew quite close and we really got on well, but I was young.....I think he would have missed me.....I think I was probably full of myself as all young people are......I think differently now.....
