- The #BeachBoys reflect on 'Good Vibrations' and how Brian Wilson is doing now | Gold Radio
Gold's James Bassam interview with The Beach Boys legends Mike Love and Bruce Johnston at the launch of their new Disney+ documentary.
Starting out as a garage band, the California group emerged as the leaders of the surf rock boom of 1963, but managed to sustain their success with hit after hit across the decade and beyond.
The original lineup featured brothers Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. They were later joined by a number of full-time musicians, most notably Bruce Johnston once Brian took a step back from live performance.
Known for their vocal harmonies, youth-centric lyrics, and musical creativity, they are one of the most influential bands of the rock era.
The Beach Boys captured the southern California youth culture of surfing, cars, and romance, known as the California sound. They were one of the few American rock bands to maintain their commercial success during the British Invasion. In 1966, the Pet Sounds album and the single 'Good Vibrations' elevated the group's status as rock innovators.
And now, a new documentary on Disney+ will delve into the band's history, from their early beginnings, the various tragic occurrences throughout the decades, and where they are now.
To celebrate, Gold's James Bassam caught up with Beach Boys legends Mike and Bruce to hear more about the film, as well as some fascinating stories.
Mike telling the story again. Bruce can’t even get a word in without being interrupted
As a black man the Beach Boys harmony drives me nuts. Wouldn't It Be Nice is one of those songs I listen to over again just for the harmony. Amazing at best! I'm sorry I had to interject color in this but I just wanted to show how the music effectively reached different cultures.
Harmony transcends. The instrumental of WIBN is unearthly IMO before the words were even added.
this guys are always "Beatles, Beatles, Beatles, Pet Sounds, Beatles, Kokomo", holy shit!
I’ve seen these guys over 100 times and that includes all the original beach boys. I saw them three times at the Washington monument on July 4 in the 1980s and it was unbelievable! I totally get what Mike says about performing live because the crowd enthusiasm is off the charts for Beach boys concerts when they were all together Excluding Brian Wilson most of the time. In my opinion/observation, Brian‘s best tour with the Beach boys post 1964 was the reunion tour of 2012.
GOD BLESS BRIAN, MIKE, BRUCE, AL, DAVE, & R.I.P TO THE LATE DENNIS & CARL. THE GREATEST OF THE GREAT. 🇺🇲🎼
Of course.., Mike talking about Brian’s masterpiece ‘Good Vibrations’ makes it all about himself and his dopey lyrics.
There would not be The Beach Boys if it wasn’t for Brian!!! In my opinion, Brian is the Beach Boy! He wrote the music and could have sung it all!!!
I met Brian at a carnival in 1969. He was giving out free albums. He gave me Smiley Smile and autographed it. I will never forget that. He’s always been my favorite Beach Boy.
both dennis and carl have explicitly stated "brian is the beach boys. we're nothing but a jam band without him."
100%. He actually had all the parts worked out before he even choose who would sing lead. IMO he still sang some of the lower parts more effectively than Mike even at an advanced age.
Bruce begs to speak for 1 second… Mike says please do and gives him an entire minute.
I can't dislike Mike, but I can see how his bandmates got annoyed.
i dislike mike for touching underage fans in public throughout his entire career, same with motley crue's frontman. nobody cares tho, cuz apparently women and children don't matter.
He said it. The guy that made him probably way over a hundred million dollars over the years cheated him. Considering Brian’s current health issues this is an amazing inappropriate as well as a false statement. When Brian finally won back the publishing rights he was being controlled by Landy and his decisions were being made by Landy. Everything Love has in his lifetime is because of Brian.
You are 100% right!
Mike Love is a great songwriter. Just look at the songwriting credits.
@@markusrose9667
What has he wrote as the solo lyricist? Even California Sur was co written with Al Jardine.
I am not going to deny he did add some decent lyrics to the early songs but he mostly took a completed version and rearranged some verses to most. Mike never surfed and didn’t know the lingo that surfers used so it always made me wonder if he got some of the surf lyrics from Dennis who simply didn’t care about credits. Brian disputed a lot of Mikes claims about who came up with what as well.
@@pauldrew3696 he wrote lyrics to California Girls and Good Vibeations for God sake. Also everything on Wild Honey and a bunch of other stuff.
@@markusrose9667
He did write some of the lyrics to those songs, so didn’t Brian. My whole problem with him is he takes way too much credit besides just being a jerk in general.
How do you talk about good vibrations without Brian.
Don’t you know that was Mikes contribution? He even said so. Twenty minutes to re write a couple of phrases but Brian only spent weeks if not months writing and composing it.
It would be hard to talk to an incoherent person.
Correction, these 2 guys are NOT the Beach Boys. They are 2 of the remaining living members. Just like an interview with Pete and Roger would never be titled The Who.
still got AL and BRiAN, they're as original as it gets.
@@jennydeaf9O9I’d much rather see an interview from them, Al would probably do most of the talking. Hell throw Blondie Chaplin in there, I hate that he ever left.
I see no Beach Boys here. Mike Love would be a Wal Mart greeter today without Brian.
The problem was the people who created the underlying reasons for the Wilson’s drug use. Love still whining about his lyrics that he was way over compensated for is nauseating. He just backhanded Brian about not giving him credit when Brian had nothing to do with Murray selling the rights.
But the interviewer asked the question about it. And Mike did say he has way more to be positive and thankful for than to complain about. I thought he handled the question about as well as it could be handled.

My point is he brings up being cheated by Murray and Brian. This guy just can’t show any class even at the age of 83. First off Brian gave him his money through a court settlement that he should have contested because Love didn’t show definite proof of exactly what he wrote but Brian wanted him to get credit so he didn’t contest. Secondly as previously stated by Brian in a rare case of aggression toward Mike is that he would be pumping gas without me. Thirdly how classless is it to be bringing this up over and over? He was compensated, he probably has made over a hundred million or better and finally what the hell does he expect that his legacy should be equal to one of the greatest composers of the 20th century?
@@pauldrew3696 I get it man and I concede your observations. But I was at a concert where Dennis was running across the stage in his underwear high on heroin and barbiturates and trying to knock over instruments and Brian was completely sheltered away and disinterested back in California. Mike seemed to be the only professional in the group at that time and I don’t think Endless Summer gets made had Mike not held the group together in those dark days. Endless Summer was a huge resuscitation of the group which had a fundamental benefit to Brian as well.
@@bsouth7042
Unfortunately Dennis was a wreck at that point but what about Carl and AL? Without Carl the group is done by 1968. Mike had no ability to lead a band back then and Carl held it all together
Mr Love is the unsung mastermind of the Beach Boys. Mike and Brian created magic together , parallels Lennon and Macca.
Yes indeed, as he has told us so many times. Love attached himself to Brian like a fly to crap and leeched off him his entire life.
Really enjoyed listening! Wish they would self produce much more of these in a series! Just “Times to Remember” reminisces of years gone by. Thanks for posting! 😊❤
Mike does a stunning job of dodging the fact that his lyrics to "Good Vibrations" only came AFTER Tony Asher - the lyricist for most of Pet Sounds - had written lyrics for "Good Vibrations" that were on the demo and used by Brian for Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE in 2004.
He changed 2 verses. That’s it, now he says he came up with the title Good Vibrations which is a total lie. Brian only gave him a chance to re-write because he was under extreme pressure from the record company to get the song out. Asher was actually disappointed he didn’t have the time to re arrange the words a little. My bet is Asher would have done better with time as the lyrics are the songs only weakness but Carl covered it over with his outstanding voice.
They were the highlight of my childhood
Not bad for a "garriage" band.
Consider the Surf's Up and Holland albums. Total chill.
Not bad. Change a couple of verses and take credit for ground breaking pop rock.

This isn’t The Beach Boys, this is Mike Love and Bruce Johnston who stole the name from Brian Wilson.
Mike sued Al Jardine once and Brian twice, and he was generally a pain. He doesn't seem to be telling the truth about song lyrics. Just my opinion
He won lawsuit against Brian and got credit for the lyrics that Brian's handlers kept from him, and Brian admitted that Mike did write those lyrics.
Is there anything which we don't already know
Bruce looks really weak. I love these guys but there are probably not many concerts remaining
Mike is .jealous sob
Mike is such a narcissist. He simply cannot open his mouth without being combative…
yA NaRcIsSiSt
It’s unbelievable how narcissistic this guy is. Even with Brian in poor health he takes time to cheap shot him and push untruths about the history between them.
@@pauldrew3696 Yeah it simply never ends. It’s actually gotten much worse. Winning that lawsuit 20-25+ years ago has empowered him. Now he starts every sentence with “….while I was writing the lyrics to [insert song here]”. Or how about always with the “….well doing drugs was never MY thing..”. And just how many (young) wives and broken marriages have you had so far Mr Morality?? Don’t worry Mike you’ve still got a little time left to make the most recent Mrs. Love run screaming from your door. Helluva guy.
Mr Love is a humble gentleman and a scholar
@@scamaropppi Just ask him.., he’ll tell ya all about it 😂
The drugged up hippie version specifically written for the 60's and 70's. Com'on boomers and the beach boys you know it's true!
I, like the way the drugs are shinning as if they're in her hair,
I, want to do some more drugs with her maybe on the beach or anywhere,
I'm pickin up good drug vibrations bop bop she's supplying good drug variations, do do do good drug vibrations,
With acid she's somehow closer than she really is, with coke we've already traveled 2 million miles,
I'm pickin up good drug vibrations bop bop she's supplying good drug variations, do do do good drug vibrations,
Gotta keep those good drug vibrations happenin with her,
Gotta keep those good drug vibrations happenin with her,
I don't know where but she gets the best drugs from there, ahhhh ahhhh ahhhh,
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Do do do good drug vibrations,
Mmmmbop bop good drug vibrations....
Mike Love has actually been anti-drugs for most of his life.
@@blairmcquarrie6070 Mike love didn't write the song. Relax it's a parody.
