Kenpachi did say in his flashback that he named Yachiru (his lieutenant/pink-haired little girl) after the person he respected most. Now we know who that is and why a lot of soul reapers are so afraid of Unohana. Behind that smile of hers lies a demon 😂

The Unohana reveal has been hinted at since VERY early on in the series.
1. Everyone, even Captains powerful as Shunsui and Ukitake are shown to be afraid of her.
2. Her fake name, Retsu, means "violent" or fierce", hinting at her true nature.
3. In the SS arc, she is the first Captain to notice something is off about Aizen's death (even while under complete hypnosis. When she arrives in the Underground Meeting assembly area after Aizen waxes Hitugaya, he acknowledges that he thought she would be showing up soon.
4. If you recall Kenpachi's backstory flashback from the SS arc, he tells Yachiru that he named her after the one person he admires and respects. The First Kenpachi, Unohana Yachiru is that person.
5. Even from the first databooks, her total combat ability score was 540/600, which is second only to Aizen and Yamamoto who both have a total of 560/600. Her special ability was also listed as kenjutsu, NOT healing.

databooks can be misleading sometimes tho. Yamamoto's combat ability shouldnt be 560/600 but close to closer to 600 as he masters every form of combat and is the strongest ever.

Kenpachi is a title that's is given to the most bloodthirsty captain. The 11th squad captain spot is reserved for the Kenpachi, meaning to become the current Kenpachi you have to kill the old one. Zanjutsu is swordsmanship, the art of the sword. Kenpachi doesn't know swordsmanship, they feared he'd be too strong with it so they stopped Yamamoto from teaching him. Crazy to think Kenny is so strong despite just swinging a sword around like a stick. That's what Shunsui decides to teach him through Unohana, the original Kenpachi
Yep and the tradition was likely established after she retired to squad 4 so everyone after that has been killing the previous Kenpachi to take the title. But I assume Yamamoto can still appoint anyone as Kenpachi if they fall in battle, or transfer out etc.

Unohana is so badass. Now a lot of things make sense. Previously in his flashback, Zaraki said he named his lieutenant Yachiru after the one person he admired. That's Unohana. Also, Unohana really did stab Kenpachi and he passed out for a bit. You can still see his blood on her face from the stab. She just chill about it like nothing happened. lol
I love her. Badass & scary! And I'm not sure, but I think Kenpachi's the 11th Kenpachi and in past, all predecessor were killed by successors, except Unohana.

@@pitoseavy4523 she healed him and she mentions that whenever he's about to die, he often blacks out and goes back to how he was as a child power wise. believe or not, Zaraki was actually stronger as a child but he put limits on himself subconsciously so that he could enjoy fighting more if he was weaker.
Even Aizen didn't want that smoke. He always avoided her, when he first revealed himself, he dipped and when he invaded "Fake Karakura" he made sure she was in Hueco Mundo first.
I feel bad for Unohana, she spent hundreds of years reinventing herself, healing countless people, becoming very respected and appreciated for not being a killing machine but yet she has to return to being the demon. You can see with her reaction to Tenjiro's comment and her face when she's in Central 46 that she isn't thrilled about this.

It's sort of true. There was no way she could have stopped Aizen, but she would have been a pain in the ass to deal with. In a way, that's showing respect. "I could take her out, but it would actually be work, so I'll just trap her somewhere".
It's stated that you can only become a Kenapchi if you finish off the previous one. My own theory is that because she retired and became the leader of Squad 4 the title could be passed on because she wasn't a Kenapchi and only ONE Kenapchi can be around.

Unohana Yashiru vs Zaraki Kenpachi...the first Kenpachi vs the current one...one of the 5 big moments I wanted to see so badly animated in that arc and it doesn't disappoint ! The battle of the Kenpachi's...what is gonna come out of this room will be an unstoppable killing machine forged by battle of pure instincts...it's savage and glorious at the same time ! Can't wait for episode 10 !!!
While some may have felt like this plot twist seemingly came out of nowhere, Conversely throughout the series, Unohana was foreshadowed a few times despite her gentle personality and maternal figure of soul society.
1. Her braided hairstyle that she’s always wore at the front of her chest was to cover her scar.
2. She was the only one who saw through Aizen’s hypnosis and that he gave credit to for doing so back in soul society, fleeing from her knowing that if he fought her it would’ve been trouble, a death match for him.
3. Back in Hueco Mundo, the clean up squad of hollow soldiers known as the Exequias fled from her instead of putting up a fight knowing they didn’t stand a chance.
4. Shunsui and Ukitake as senior captains were shown being scared of/creeped out by her in the turn back the pendulum/Vizard flashback arc, as well as others being nervously afraid when she makes an eerie serious smile, which was only meant to be seen as a gag initially.
5. She the 2nd oldest after Yama and last remaining member of the OG 13 court guard squads just now revealed.
Needless to say it was a plot twist and a half that was subtly built up as a lady of the sword as a great character that just happens to be a lady: A Blood Prime Death Goddess.
Fun Fact: Unohana is the only female character in this series with no fan service, that is beneath her. An Epitome of a woman above men, the kind that makes the best out of them, just like Krista Sudmalis who invented the GigaChad.

If you look back in the old series, all that mysterious intimidating vibe from Unohana that others getting from her was a crazy foreshadowing of who she really was.

Next episode is when you know how terrifying Unohana actually is. The sole reason why she learnt healing techniques is the reason why everyone in the squads except Yamamoto (and to a certain extent, Zaraki) is afraid of her.
The direction, the photography, the ilumination... Bleach is artisticallly on another level, it may not have the best technical animation, even tho it delivers in the important fights, but its art its just outstanding and unrivaled
Unohana being a Kenpachi makes sense when you think about it: if she can put people back together this well, she must be good at taking them apart.

Unohana was the first Kenpachi and then she left to be the captain of Squad 4. Other people have taken the mantle of Kenpachi and the NORM is that you can only be a Kenpachi after defeating the previous one.
Zaraki is the 11th Kenpachi after killing the previous one. So Unohana is the only one so far that just simply walked away from the title.
Except there's one more kenpachi whos still alive... He's at the Mugen

@@kittylitty01 Kenpachi never beat Soya. Soya literally soloed the entire 13 Court Guard Squads. There is a big misconception of what you just stated as well. Kenpachi actually never beat Soya.
Kenpachi is basically a titled held by the Captain of the 11th Squad. Zaraki got it by killing the former Kenpachi iirc. It's one of the two ways that someone can become a Captain.
In Unohana's case, I think she stepped away willingly to become a healer and the title was passed to the next person who was strong enough to be considered it, which started the tradition.

The reveal of Unohana made all the times that other squads were scared into behaving by her make total sense.
I don’t know if anyone notice but you could see that Kenpachi actually got cut in the throat and Yachiru just healed before he died which making him stronger and you can tell because the blood is still there on her face.
As mentioned in the video, Unohana is the first one to receive the title Kenpachi, and also the very first captain of the 11th Squad. She moved to squad 4 (for some unknown reason, yet), so squad 11 had to have a new captain. Zaraki is the 11th captain because he killed the 10th captain. Anyone who becomes the captain of 11th Squad holds the 'Kenpachi' title by tradition.

Because it's the only way for Zaraki to get stronger. He can't unlock his shika/bankai without overcoming his self impose seal on himself and the only way to do that is for Zaraki to willingly kill and surpass Unohana. That's how I think Shunsui saw this confrontation between the two Kenpachis. If Zaraki gets killed by Unohana, then he simply wasn't up to the task. No matter the results, only one Kenpachi is leaving that Muken.

The history of the Kenpachis is absolutely crazy amazing of them, I've been looking through of them and both very badass and insane to see how they turn out to be strongest soul reaper from generations especially yachiru scary good. I'm glad they animated the fight nicely so far tbh can't wait until next week to see the end. Btw I also know what happens from manga read back then of gods how long I can remember, but really don't like to spoil for you two very much to see your reaction so keep up the work you two.👍
unohana had relinquished her title as kenpachi and became a pacifist which is why other kenpachi were able to exist at the same time as her. but now that she reclaimed the title one of them has to die because there can only be 1 kenpachi

To be considered a kenpachi you have to kill the previous kenpachi. Remember, thats how Zeraki got his kenpachi title, when he killed the kenpachi before him (prev 11th captain)

If y’all look back when kubo introduced us to the og 13 unohana was the first one to kill someone in the flashback and that look of malice showed how blood thirsty she was lol. Unohana is nicknamed the blood of death, because of that he has the title Kenpachi, the title of the strongest assassin. each generation only has to have one Kepanchi, therefore they must fight, to determine who is the true owner of the Kenpachi title. and there is something more interesting, Unohana's real name is Unohana Yachiru... Yachiru's name is similar to the name of his Vize captain Zaraki-Kenpachi😁

Kenpachi (剣八, Sword-Eight) is the title that is only given to the strongest Shinigami. It is an ironclad rule that there can be only one Kenpachi per generation, meaning that the predecessor must die for the killer to succeed the title. To inherit this title, the candidate must kill the current Kenpachi in battle.
It's not an iron clad rule.
Assume a kenpachi dies in battle to a hollow. Does the hollow become the new kenpachi? Does the lineage of Kenpachi stop? No one else can be kenpachi after that?
Wouldnt that title be given to Yamamoto or Ichibei then?

@estebanbr7596 No!! The whole Kenpachi title was given "after." Yamamoto created the 13 court guards, and ge became the head captain Unohana founded the 11th division who got the spot of "Kenpachi."
The rule is/was always since the founding of that title that "the person that beats/kills the Kenpachi takes over the title which means the strongest "Shinigami."
While it's true that Yamamoto is/was the strongest "Shinigami," he still needs to challenge and beat the holder of the title Kenpachi to get it. So
1. I don't think Yamamoto was interested in that title after he founded the Gotei , so he never challenged Unohana, the previous holder of that title.
2. He was already the headcaptain, and the 11th division was established for "Kenpachi"
About Ichibei, it's for one the same, which is
1. True stronger than both (Yamaji, Unohana), but he still has to challenge the holder of that title. If he doesn't want to, then Unohana holds that title still
2. He is a Royal guard he doesn't have any business with the Gotei, or better with the rules of becoming Kenpachi, and even if he wanted that title he still has to stay at the royal palace so he can't take over that spot, name, and 11th divion.
And the other reason, which is still a theory, would be,
We don't know if Ichibei is really a Shinigami as he lived before the Soul Society existed he also had his "weapon" before the Zanpakuto was created so its also a mystery if his weapon is actually a Zanpakuto

You guys are forgetting... Unohana is also a healer, she's the 1st kenpachi for a reason he wants to keep her enemies heal so that she can enjoy the fight and made them suffer. That's why when she cut his throat, He's already healed and zaraki forgets and doesn't remember it.

Btw kenpachi isn’t a reincarnation process. Basically you can challenge the current kenpachi to a death match and if you kill them you become the new one. You’ll find out why unohana is still alive despite this process in the next episode (or the one after that because this fight is pretty long)
by the way to clarify she did stab him in the throat but healed him after because u can see that she had no blood on her cheek before stabing him but after they show a blood drop fall on her cheek and after kenpachi woke up she still had blood on her cheek so it cant be like a vision or mind fuckery

The OST playing during the Kenpachi vs Unohana fight scenes was pretty dope.
Yachiru never killed any captain of the 11th squad. She was ordered to leave the seat officer of captain of the 11th squad vacant to dedicate herself on healing abilities. Kirinji tought her these abilities in order for her to assume the position of captain of the 4th squad. However Yachiru never once forsook the title of Kenpachi, despite the fact that we had already 5 captains of the 11th squad. All claimed the title Kenpachi but none ever fought for that title except Zaraki when killed the previous captain of the 11th squad, however, the true title remains with Unohana Yachiru a.k.a Yachiru Kenpachi

The guy with the healing hotspring mentioned that he taught Unohana the healing arts. So it's reasonable to assume that he was the first captain of Squad Four, the healing squad. Unohana on the other hand was the first captain of Squad Eleven and the first Kenpachi. She passed on the title of Kenpachi to her successor because she assumed that the current Kenpachi would eventually attempt to take over Squad Eleven and he was the one that most deserved the title. So the title was inherited by all the subsequent Captains of Squad Eleven. The current Kenpachi is the eleventh Captain to take the name (probably a joke on the part of Tite Kubo).
For information, the 5 potential war people meant by ywhach are Ichigo, Kisuke, Azien, Ichibe(leader squad 0) & Zaraki..

Unohana has been foreshadowed to be very strong pretty early on in the series, Shunsui and Ukitake were scared shitless when she got a little bit angry. In a data book released during the Soul Society arc Unohana was listed having total combat strength of 540/600, second only to Yamamoto who had 560/600. Her specialty was listed as Zenjutsu (the art of the sword), not healing.
Kenpachi named little girl Yachuri after her due to how much of an impact she had on him. Also he did indeed die once when Unohana stabbed him, remember she can heal.
Their have been a total of 11 kenpachis. The ones that we know by name are yachiru unohana being the first. The 7th kenpachi kuruyashiki, the 8th kenpachi azashiro, the 10th kenpachi which is the one zaraki kills to become the captain. And the 11th kenpachi which is zaraki.

The kenpachis fight always hard for me to see knowing that person had to die for that person. I remember the first time I read it in the manga.. I was like "WTF...NOOOOO THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING!"

She didn't kill them(other Kebpachi)....she just "abandoned" the name. The next ones killed themselves to inherit the name
Unohana is the 1st Kenpachi and Zaraki is the 11th (said in Soul Society arc), so there were 9 more Captains of the squad 11 between them with the title of Kenpach, which Zaraki killed the 10th and took his place.
The kenoachi title is awarded the strongest fighter. She only recognizes him as the potential greatest kenpachi and there can only be one kenpachi

if you look at when he gets stabbed in the neck, he spits blood out onto her cheek and when he has his sword and is confused, she still has the blood on her cheek, its the animators letting you know that it really did happen, he did get stabbed.
Zaraki is the 11th kenpachi, the title is passed from one person beating a kenpachi to become the new one except unohana. She gave up her role after “losing” to zaraki. When you guy get the chance read the spirits are forever with you light novel that talks about the 7th and 8th kenpachi and some other cool details from bleach lore

I think Unohana switched over to Squad 4 and the line of Kenpachi's started anew with Zaraki being the latest one. It's arguable that that the second line doesn't really count since no one had ever killed Unohana and truly earned the title.
Okay so without spoiling anything Unohana was the first Kenpachi, and after a while she had changed squads and became the captain of the 4th division as a healer, since that day, the Kenpachi of squad 11 had been determined by someone killing the previous one. Zaraki then killed the 10 Kenpachi hundreds of years later to become the 11th Kenpachi. It’s sort of like in boxing, if you retire the champion, and then the next champion is just who wins a set up fight, not because they actually beat you. She’s basically the heavyweight champion of the world and never gave up the title, and now Zaraki and Unohana are fighting, which means is Zaraki kills Unohana he would be the undisputed Kenpachi of the Gotei 13. It’s not EXACTLY like that but it’s the best analogy I could come up with.
Your questions will be answered the next Episode. Unahana was the first as you just found out and others came after but Kenpachi Zaraki is the 11th Kenpachi and its mentioned in one of the earlier episodes and as well a small tidbit was in the Bount arc that showed how he became the Captain.
Unohana is insanly badass... and her voice.. just few details changed but wow. The anime staff worked with perfection.

Unohana didnt kill anyone after the first war with quincies. Despite it s not said kost likely she "retired" into the healing squad and either the next kenpachi was falsely called first, or she was considered dead so a second kempachi took the seat.
The first quincy war is over 1000 years old. She s that old along yama and a few other peeps. Several kempachis followed her in the division, by the rule that to be the captain of 11 squad you should kill the previous captain, aka the kempachi. If i recall, zaraki killed the 4th kempachi and became the 5th. @struckbybrllz
