In this video I will be having a closer look at the cheapest street-legal E-Scooter I could find on the Internet. It is called the eScooter Street One from Aldi and I will not only tell you my personal opinion about it but I will also upgrade some of its electrical features. That means I will try to increase its speed, range, charge up time and also change the fact that the lights require their own little batteries. Let's get started!

@@VincentFischer The lamp probably has a resistor already, since it runs off 3 AAA or AA cells. 3 x 1.5V = 4.5V, while the forward voltage of a typical white LED is 3V. Besides, dropping 42V to 4.5V via resistors is so inefficient that it might as well be a war crime. Typical cheap buck converters are a couple $ a piece, and are typically 80-85% efficient (depending on the voltage and current).

Joke aside, brushless motor ESC can generate quite some transient voltage spike due to the nature of switched inductor. This is an even bigger problem with active or regen braking which often featured on most ESC because you're sending power back to the line. ESC requires stable input supply which can be attained by having an array of capacitor on the input and having low resistance power path to battery to dampen the surge, which I'm pretty sure the 5.5mm barrel connector is lacking of. Just my thoughts :-)

You might also have been able to get more efficiency out of replacing the controller and thus increased range that way and you could have used a buck converter to bump the voltage down. if you put more battery on in series. A boost circuit might let him burn the battery lower than normal and get more speed.

@@signalworks if he wired the two packs in series a buck converter could be used to output 36v-72v he could set a range lets say 42v-36v above 44v i would imagine the motor would be getting hot if not hitting its limit they will suffer only so much over voltage. The other thing i was thinking rolling his own battery off 18650 it looked like there was almost room for 2 packs extending it by say 2 more banks of 6 cells to make it a 44v pack vs 36v.
To run the lights he just needed to run a voltage regulator that will drop the tail to 3v the headlight seemed to run at 4.5v imho better off stripping out for a 12v system. And a regulator to take 36-72v and put out 12v the head light and tail lights would output serious light then...
Careful! I fell off of one because of a tiny bump in the road when I had one hand on the handlebars. I wasn't even going that fast and it was bad. There's a reason these things aren't popular other than looks...
Hello. Thanks for sharing! For the "lights upgrade" - instead of dropping the voltage using resistors I would use step down converter - you had plenty of room for those and the advantage would be that once set - the lights would not dim when battery pack would discharge.
Sure but they draw a noticeable standby current and I wanted the battery to not drain through such loads when switch position 1 or 2 is active while the motor system is off.

The resistor set up is a very inelegant solution when all you need is a cheap little buck convertor.

How many watts do I need to dissipate= how many resistors I need to put in parallel seemed to be the main calculation here.
It is a simple and sufficient solution. A buck converter would have drawn standby current which would have drained the battery. The resistors waste around 4W of power which sounds like a lot but when you keep in mind that the scooter drains a 154Wh battery in an hour then the 4Wh for the resistors are pretty much irrelevant. But sure, you can use a buck converter if you want.

@@AL_O0 He said in another thread that the resistors use 4 W/hrs of the 154 W/hr battery. The lamps themselves probably only use a half of that at most. The current might be low but the voltage drop isn't.

Maximum Speed Under a load is something to look into as well, like average speed under a small incline like 3 degrees or so, could be improved with a higher capacity battery pack but keep the voltage the same. This increases range and improves performance by reducing voltage drop on the motor. Did this to my E-scooter and went from 9 MPH up a slight incline to 11-12 MPH. Also gained 3 miles of range. Went from 5AH to 7AH. Also I have been losing weight which contributes to the scooter running more efficiently with less weight to carry.

I liked the two upgrades but the one on the lights with the couple dozen resistors looked, well, not very elegant :D. You can easily make a couple of crude constant current sources like those you have shown in so many of your videos...

I'd rather use some small dc-dc to drive the lamps, to avoid wasting power on the resistors. Maybe i'd also put the lights in series to increase the overall required voltage (if they are rated similar voltage & current)

If range matters, just use a small DC-DC converter for the lights. They are much more efficient and will provide a constant voltage so your lights will not go dim when you accelerate or when the battery is low.
They cost less than €2 including shipping.

If the motor has the torque to pull higher gearing, you can increase the top speed by putting a bigger tyre on it.
The speedo (if derived from the rear wheel rpm) will be inaccurate though.
Oh, and stick some grommets on the wires going through the metal to the battery, unless you want and "exciting" experience after it rubs through the insulation!

Is it possible to have a switch to change polarities of batteries when fast charging? For instant my battery pack is 36 v. But can I make a switch to change the polarities of battery with a flick of switch to 72v? Reason, to increase voltage so I can use higher v charger so my battery charge rate increase.
I love the electronic upgrades. I have a suggestion for the mechanical ones, LocTite Blue on all the screws & nuts used for the lights and reflectors. I'ts fairly inexpensive and works.

You can also upgrade the speed by connecting your skateboard battery in series and using the VESC.

I've added a second battery in parralel on an m365, they have custom firrmware you can change the rpm limiter and current draw, got an extra 9mph becuase there is an extra bank of cells to draw curtrent from, little bit worried the mosfets will burn out though
Resistors? Check LM317 current limiter circuit configuration. You can do the exact same with a buck converter, i.e., make it a buck current controller.

I've been trying to install turn signals on my scooter for a few weeks, but I can't.
The battery has a capacity of 52V (59V fully charged) and the LEDs that I am trying to install only use 12V MAX.
I have already tried to install adjustable voltage buck converters, but they have burned out the scooter controller, because they seem to consume more electricity than what is allowed by the controller on this branch of the circuit (turn signals).
The LEDs are already attached to the scooter, but they are not yet powered.
So I would just like to know how to go from (more / less) 52V with a resistor, without risking to burn the new replacement controller.
How can i do thant please ?

Question,
1. Why not use a voltages regulator for the lamps to conserve power and compensate for the voltage drop for your battery as it discharges?
Modified my e-scooter (Ninebot ES1) with 4 times as many batteries to get a much longer range. Requires two chargers, which I plan to replace with one beefier charger. The steering pole looks like it's been eating steroids with all the extra batteries hanging around. (Made some neat holders with help of a 3D printer).
I've also increased the maximum allowed current to the motor in the controller settings. A bit above the recommended settings for the BLDC motor. That did shorten the range a bit, but in turn, it got a lot stronger and have a much easier time uphill. I can always lower the speed to increase the range if need be.
The scooter in question is made from scrap-parts and broken/run over scooters I've bought from various sources, which made it all quite cheap.. except for the batteries. They're the most expensive parts in my case. I don't want to deal with batteries from questionable sources, or deal with "used" battery packs. One never know the state of those which can be dangerous.

I Lived in Germany in the 80's for 3 years. I loved it. Was the cleanest place I ever lived. I remember folks getting out and sweeping the streets. I was relatively fluent speaking german, but forgot it all now. But in today's world? You couldn't pay me to live there. Back then i was able to own guns, go hunting and fishing... was pretty free. Now you can't do jack.
Much better to live in America instead. No amount of murdered children will change our minds about easy access to guns being more important than everything else in our lives.
another way to overcome the top speed, which is often cheaper is to swap in a motor rated for slightly less voltage .. SO if this was a 36 v configuration , a 24 v motor of similar spec would make the top speed 27kph or so.. and the battery and controller could remain stock

Yes it is, and it's also no street-legal anymore...
I don't know why, there aren't any modification regarding the legality. The things that must be present, OTOH, are: speed limit, power limit, front and back lights, two independent brakes, license number, bell. Unless there's a special clause in the insurance that forbids ANY modifications, it should still be street legal.
Only thing he did was add a jack for a second battery and hardwired the lights to run on the system battery and not a button cell and AA cells. They tend to run flat (no longer produce power) in usually 20/30 min depending on the outside temp, how often the lights are used (when riding at night) and how long they are "on" per trip. So technically he hasn't voided anything but the warranty. If something were to break on it, he couldn't send it back to be fixed.

As far as i understand this law here in germany: the scooters count as motor vehicle, same as for example cars. Because of that every scooter/product needs the official (TÜV) certification, number plate and insurance to be legal on public roads. The certification is invalid as soon as you modify any important part. It is not enough to have all features and that it works fine, there are chinese brand scooters that fulfill all technical requirements, but are still not street legal, just because the manufactures did not go through the certification process here.
Probably there are no special clauses from the insurance, but it is also void if they find out that the vehicle was not street legal... I would expect using external batteries counts as modified power train and could bring you in serious trouble.
In my opinion it is insane, especially with that low speed limit they should have just made it equal to bicycles, where all of this stuff is not required, even for E-Bikes up to 25km/h.
@@1Hippo a second battery has nothing to do with the power train because a battery is just a battery, you can change the battery in your car and not be in trouble. The power train is made up of the motor, gears/belts and tires. All that stuff he left as is. He did try another ESC to see if there is a difference in top speed but hooked the original one back up. As for the headlight and the tail light he hardwired them so he doesn't have to keep buying AAA batteries and button cells when they die... Soo to me it still sounds street legal.

my stock battery is 36v 5 amps and lion is the spare battery I want to make is 36v 12 amps and lifepo4 is it a problem?
I recently bought one of these Megawheels scooters used from ebay for around 120 €. I didn't feel a need for a higher speed, but more power is needed. It has this 5.5 inch hub motor on it and I decided that without altering the original speed control at all, I'm just going to attach a decond similar motor on the front of it with its own speed controller. Now it should in theory have double the torque, but still the same speed of course costing the battery life, but in my use a smaller distance is really not a problem. I only need it for small bursts like 6 km after which I can plug it in to charge. Of course after this it wouldn't be legal in Germany anymore I think, because by my modifications it loses the kick detection and has way more power than legally allowed. In my country it's not a problem though, because no one really monitors these things and it doesn't need an insurance.

Wire a 3 pole double throw contactor for a wye start delta run. 1.7x increase in RPM but 50% the torque.
I got the street-legal Doc Green ESA 5000 from Lidl in Germany for 300 Euro on Black Friday last year. It does not require batteries for the lights, the range is 22km, the motor is 350W and the bigger battery helps to maintain 20km/h even with a small charge left. The other good thing is that the chassis is an exact copy of the M365 and a lot of accessories are cheaply available from China. It is not perfect tho, the battery indicator is not connected to the BMS and thus is a simple voltage display that does not work well with the voltage sag that the scooter experiences under load and also does not have suspension nor pneumatic tires. There is another version that is basically identical, it is called ESA 1919 and you can currently buy it for around 350 Euro and I still think it's worth the 70 EUR over the Maginon Street One.
