In my experience, which I now take as a general rule of thumb:
The people who go on forums will generally be negative because the ones who enjoy the game are too busy playing.

yeah. I think - apart from all the important things for the pros and the joes as well; everyone would love some new civs. I would really pay 20 euro (or more?) every year for 1 or 2 new civs. it would be nice if they could give us at least some sort of schedule or little hints so that the community can speculate. some leaks like those for apple products or for a new star wars movie haha.

AOE4 needs 1 new Civ every 6 months up to a maximum of 20 civs (it’s currently at 10). Each new civ release will attract players from other RTS’s, especially AOE2 players who finally get to see their favorite civ represented.

I feel like the biggest problem with AoE4 and the superiority of AoE2 is and stays within the solo content and the especially the campaigns. And adding more civs without good quality scenarios will not help me go to AoE4, except on the rare moments I want to play multiplayer. Which happens once or twice per year for me. But significant portion of the player base in AoE2 never did a single multiplayer match ever.

Honestly, the self-feeding cycle of negativity that you find in online forums is found all over the internet and I think it has a lot to do with what’s “wrong” in todays world.
Weird aspect of human nature. I think it might be an evolutionary trait that trades off happiness for progress. Complaining leads to change. So our evolution has favored a trait that causes us to be overly negative and causes us to desire for things to be better rather than overly positive and content.

the problem is, people prefer to write down bad things in forums, malding and stuff way more than mention the good things, so yes, reddits, forums and such are places for negative things. Also people like to increase numbers of these negative things with unspecified comments like "everyone abusing this" and "nothing works" or "all are quitting" because the want to get their opinion noticed... Mainly they want to get help by others to solve the problems they have but some are not even able to take that help, feeling offended when you trying to help them...
overall its people are odd sometimes

Honestly, I think one of the reasons people are so desperate for the game (or any skill based game) to by "dying" is some form of validation for being bad at it. In their minds it goes "I suck at this game but its a dying/dead game and that means it sucks, so I suck at a game that sucks, so I don't care that I suck" They so desperately want the game to die so they can validate themselves for being bad at it.

Its like avoiding the question when asked about: is the game dying? You evade it by answering to a miconception of what dying is. Of course you can measure if a game is dying by a tendency in over lets say 3 years of player activity. And if theres a recline, you call it out. The game is probably dying, but i would say that the community is just small. And people will stay no matter what.

In case you don't realize, playing sports vs playing games requires different things: physical fitness on the former and patience/interest in the latter. Not everyone in their 40's have the time and good physical condition to play sports while kids have all the time in the world not just to play games, but to also watch someone play them. You just outed yourself as someone who hasn't held a ball and never played sports in their entire life.

Them having dif strengths and weaknesses that you need to learn how to exploit is the whole point and what makes the game so fun. Give us more more civilizations though. If I like one I'll play them, if I don't they are fresh meat for the grinder. The challenge of defeating interesting civs in glorious combat is what makes the game fun. And more civs makes it more historically accurate what's not to like?

Stupid logic 1: Beasty benefits from the game
Do you know what benefits him most? Much more players spending much more money, so he can earn much more rewards.
Stupid logic 2: it's not good to announce changes (new civs) sooner
And after this statement, you say but roadmap is. What do you think roadmap contains? Exactly that, the new civs. As was with the previous 2. So this argument is just stupid because it's contradicting yourself.
The rest I care not to comment, there 2 were the ones that hurt my eyes and ears mostly.
Game is good it gets constantly better month by month. It's a bit boring but they always improve it little by little. My suggested plan is to add a personal lobby / group lobby that is similar to Fortnite one, with the ability to buy awesome historical personalities skins and landmarks / other objects for the background. This will engage players, get new ones, and help fund the tourneys/dev/marketing. Also, some surprise effect is needed at each season start. Monster existence in the new season shouldn't be spoiled from day 0, but instead let the players discover it and be like wth is that.

In the patch notes the developers acknowledged the matchmaking problem and said they're looking at methods to improve it. But it won't be easy, coz the fundamental issue is that there's just too few games going on, like during peak hours there are like 120 ranked 4v4 happening each hour. for the entire ladder. Off-hours that's 50 games/hour. That's not a whole lot of games to cover the entire ladder and keep queue times low enough.

I don't think the game's dying I just think it lacks a certain level of excitement that it used to have and player features that would really help the game. I saw Merlin's micro maps and IMO those are way better than the empire war idea. Imperial actually feels special to achieve on those games, like a giant risk. I wish the game could zoom out more like aoe2 but that option isn't available. I wish they would just rework mangudai to not suck against 75% of the unit builds in game or give them a negative damage nerf when attacking villagers. There are so many "Fixes" that either come too late, should've been there since game creation, or overswing and destroy the identity of civs imo. There shouldn't be unit compositions that dominate completely, but there should be identity compositions that should be more powerful than the rest and seemingly half of the civs don't have that at any given time due to the double nerfing they're so fond of. I have a lot of hope for the game but they need to stop micromanaging features and balance for people malding in tourneys and start putting in features or content that'll bring new players and normies into the game. It'll help with all the other existential problems like queue wait times and poor skill matchups that could actually kill the game.
-Not an expert, not a pro, just a guy who loves the game but never goes on ladder because it's a completely game every season. I don't compete in games that change rules every 3 months, and we can call it a personal flaw, but I feel as if I'm not alone here.

AOE 4 averages 7,000 active players and that is basically all multiplayer. And those numbers have been steady for months. That is pretty damn good for a modern RTS. Whiners are not data-driven, let's say.

The most important thing between whining and let's call it "emotional" criticism (so criticism where ppl are usually be "a bit harsh"), is that one has no alternatives or plans or anything similar, while the other one has actual solution ideas and/or arguments for/against something. Ofc that doesn't mean, that every solution is the right or good one, but at least there is something to work with, something you can actually discuss about.

I can count at least 15 times over the last few years where companies have claimed, nope nope, everything is fine, we have a plan, a 10 year plan, then cancel everything a few months, sometimes a few weeks later. Shall we start with a few of the obvious and easy ones. Marvels Avengers. Artifact. Anthem.
And while on the topic of toxic. Can we please stop calling people for "gamers" it's degrading and demeaning. Just because someone enjoy video games, doesn't mean that defines their identity and deserves a title.

But this game has so little going for it. It feels like an Early Access or Indie game of within the franchise. The lack of single-player content was the final nail in the coffin.

I can play aoe4 twice a month or daily, overwatch, cs, etc. when I drop off of a game or something, it doesn't mean I'm quitting and there may not be a reason outside of "I wanna play something else tonight." but people don't have this logic. its very binary in their minds.

I have 400 hrs in the game, I have a few masteries challenges left to do (second half of chinese and last 3 of Ottomans) and I only completed the English campaign, I'm dissapointed that we didn't get a road map or confirmation of newer civs but I have still another 100 hrs in me even if there was no update this season (I know NOTHING about the new changes other than we are going to get new unique units so that's a lot of extra fun for me), the only reason I became aware of all the dooming in the subreddit is because of the whole ordeal with the Reddit API use prices.
Gaming forums are almost always biased towards negativity by their very nature, it's far more likely that someone who's enjoying the game is actually playing it in their free time than writing posts about how much they enjoy the game, on the other hand, if someone isn't happy with the game (whichever the reason it may be) they will either vent on the forums or just go do something else, in other words, the only metric that doesn't lie is active player number averages.
I just took a look at AOE4 player numbers and while the numbers are at a low point it is also the 3rd or fourth time in those averages and in previous cases it rebounded with new content or seasons, I don't see anything that indicates this game is dying in any way, people are just dooming for dooming sake.

Late comment, but I wanna share my opinion.
This is for any devs (Aoe of otherwise) to maybe learn from, or ignore. Up to you obviously. Brace yourselves.
When I think about a game to play, a flurry of emotions and visions come to my mind, and make me decide. For reference: games that I loved to play back in the day were: Starcraft 2; World of Warcraft; Warcraft 3; Modern Warfare 2.
The reason I played them is quite simple actually. The words might sound "complicated" if you try to make them complicated, but I think everyone innately understands each and everyone of them.
Starcraft 2: Fairness, Cool diverse poles of playstyles (Zerg spreads a lot, lots of Macro APM; Protoss had slow and strong units and scaled; Terran had weak and tons of units to APM with); and an easy game to just get started on playing.
    _
Starcraft 2 went to absolute dogshit after Wings of Liberty (yes that early) in Hots where it was only carried because of the previous expansion. Why? Because they removed Fairness, they complicated the playstyles with the clownfiesta of Swarmhosts, Widow mines etc. And made it most certainly NOT a game you can just get started to play. Campaign was good thankfully because you didnt have to deal with the additions to the game lmao. (It was good because it was the least new.)
World of Warcraft: Insanely diverse poles of playstyles, "Fair" ("" because: it was definitely not balanced, BUT it was such a huge game and with so much potential it didn't matter as much, so long as it wasn't ridiculous), And an easy game to get started on playing. Just login and do stuff to get stronger, or explore, or roleplay, or pvp, or respec, or retalent, or do stuff with guild, and friends, make friends etc. Now it's a confusing mess and a way for the devs to farm money from their players.
Warcraft 3: Best game of its time, period. Literally best game made if you think about it (yes I mean it, and I can explain:). An excellent campaign; excellent map making tool that enabled: Tons of free custom games that allowed me to play things that I couldn't in the normal mode. e.g. I could be Naga, I could play Loap (life of a peasant, like a strategy GTA where you can be the police faction, mafia, drug dealers, or just a civilian etc.), Vampirism (tower defense pvp mode that im surprised hasnt become a standalone game yet like League of Legends), and INFINITELY more games. And best of all: You can just get started and play whatever you wanted. Amazing atmosphere. And I don't know if I am missing something, buit whatever you can think of: It had it. (For a strategy game of its time). Very easy to get started on playing.
Modern Warfare 2: Best shooter of its time, and today. Lots of progression. Lots of shooting. Smooth gameplay. Cool things to strive towards. And easy to get playing.
Now let's talk about Age of Empires IV: Fairness is pretty good. Cool diverse poles of playstyles: hahaha. hahahahahahahha. Hi let me teach you some Diamond tier Age of Empires okay? 1. Learn optimal Build order execution. 2. Make villagers until 100+. Mix in some horsemen/knights if you can and kill the enemy's villagers. Make walls so the enemy cannot do the same. This is literally every civ in the game. And the ones that are "different" feel gross and uncool to play. (Nobody wants to play as India man. I'm sorry but, holy cringe.) Mongols: Weird, and uncool units. (legit not one cool unit). So diverseness is pretty lame, and playstyles are all the same. There is some flavour, but it's not enough: and it is certainly not visual or "graspable". You get dopamine rushes when you spread creep in Starcraft. In AoE4, you get nothing when you have 2 Town centers pumping out villagers. You are just stressed about being raided, or managing your units. Still. This isn't really the worst part of Age of Empires. The worst part is actually the fact that it is unbelivably difficult to start playing. The Menu is not smooth at all. Picking a civ is not smooth either. They are all the same visually and goalwise: but with vastly different build orders. And once you start a match, after getting through picking a main (something I legit quit over because it was so gross lmao: You cannot play Rus on certain maps, HRE is really good on certain maps, China is really bad on certain maps, Only French can play Water maps - back in the Hulk days. hahahahahah) you have to click on find a match. Get into a weird lobby with a weird map. If it's a water map you have to vastly change your build order again... (wow new exciting playstyle?? no. Do the civ build order right, then literally in the exact same bloody way no matter the civ + with the exact same bloody units: defeat the enemy on the water, and just win with the economic advantage you get). Literally the most boring gameplays imaginable. Imagine in Starcraft 2 there were maps called, "Space" maps where you had to make, idfk, battle cruisers, vikings, and ravens as each of the races, and just battle it out. That's boring, and we are talking about 3 races. In AoE there is like 7. All the same. Now the visuals and voice acting. This game came out in 2021. Warcraft 3 has better: campaign, voice acting, multiplayer, diversity, custom maps, FUCKING MENU SMOOTHNESS MAN, music, and potential. For all you zoomers, Warcraft 3 came out... in 2002. 19 years of looking at it and studying it: you couldn't make: a better campaign, voice acting, multiplayer, diversity, custom map tools, FUCKING MENU SMOOTHNESS CODING WHAT THE FUCK?????????????????????????????????????????, music, and potential.
And oh my God, I forgot to mention another big thing...The absolute soulessness of the game. I genuinely do not think humans have made this game. What the fuck is Relic for a company? I haven't seen a single person from there. Are there even people working there? Is the company situated in Bangladesh* or something? There is no "Blizzcon" or optimistic gamer people community who are interested in ANYTHING that has to do with Age of Empires present anywhere. There are no easter eggs, there is no emotion in voice acting, no real. Anything. There is just nothing. I can honestly imagine the game being made somewhere in Bangladesh with a bunch of grown up shoemakers being upgraded to video game programmers since they hit the age of 15. What the fck am I looking at? Warcraft 3 is: Nerds making a world of demons, orcs, elves, magic, drama, betrayal, history (fictional), vampires. What the fck is Aoe? "Bro, house of wisdom" And? "Uh. Their units speak arabic." And? "They dont eat pork." AND? "Yea that's all. Oh and Camels." Do their units run extra fast? Do their units pray at certain times of the match for a buff/debuff if they dont? Do their units build buildings faster? Do their units fight better in great numbers? Does their golden age have a battle bonus? Are their houses better or easier to build? Is their win condition literally anything other than: Build workers until 100, while slowing down the enemy villager boom, and not getting your own slowed down by the enemy? No? Just a copy paste of the other races but with some slightly different "bonuses". (Ah yes the bonuses that matter, remember back in the day knights would just have 0 counters? So much fun. Just make 100 knights and kill the enemy's army. Oh my I forgot to mention which civ's knights: Literally any one of them. They are all the same.)
Imagine if the English had a "crusade" buff they could get if they made an army of Man at arms. Slow moving but incredibly deadly blob of units.
Imagine if the French had battalion unique unit combinations that would fight incredibly well when in battalion formation.
Imagine if the Chinese had a higher population cap, instead of the stupid "magic" healing from fighting.
Imagine if there were Persians instead of Indians (who historically did close to nothing except from infighting, and were only relevant when they were Iranians/Persians - they even spoke Persian in the upper castes), and their cities made the vegetation greener and nicer wherever they built, boosting gathering rate and attractive wildlife from time to time.
Imagine if the Germans had much tougher units (Protoss) and far better upgrades, but lacked resource boosts. And so had to rely on playing defensively until their superior "Cross bearer monks" or "Teutonic knights" would cleave and mass heal armies apart lategame infront of great impenetrable walls and castles.
Imagine if the Rus had a way of integrating units from other civs as they tiered up, who would cost cheaper (but were made in random).
Imagine if the Mongol Mangudai actually mattered, and they would get bonuses for migrating their buildings around from time to time (from the start of the match: so eco and production bonus for mongols).
Imagine if Malians and the Ottomans just didn't exist.
ok, If Malians had cheap and super weak units with no armor, but their economy was gigantic (like Zerg) until they got to a point where they could make goldplated warriors who dropped gold when they died that could be harvested by special units to effectively remake the units for free.
If Ottomans could kidnap enemy villagers, as well as **roaming tribes of units around the map, with their horsemen and transform them into janissaries (powerful ranged units that people actually want to have).
I just made up ideas on the fly that would infinitely improve AoE. How have they come so far without doing ANY of this?
*im implying that workers are so mistreated and overworked for so little pay in this country that they are becoming void of what makes us human - creativity, happiness etc.
**Roaming tribes like the little groups of units you could kill in WC3 for levelling purposes.

While your critic towards Age 4 partly sounds really harsh, I overall agree. As an AoE 2 player, I giggle all the time when Age 4 players say their game is so unique bc civs and units are not copy-paste, yet their civs do the same thing all the time whereas in AoE 2, you can also go unusual ways with your civ. It's also funny to me that despite being the older and less played game, AoE 3 manages to somehow feel better than AoE 4. Guess Ensemble really nailed it when they made AoE 1 - 3 and Myth.
AoE 3 especially is an underrated gem which surely has its flaws (f'king snare) but overall has so many cool ideas such as natives on the map you can form alliances with that provide unique bonusses and whatnot

I would agree with you if you were talking about single player games. But when it comes to online games, you need other players on the game to enjoy it.
Most of the times people who are "negative" about a game does this because they care about the game and want the developers to hear what the players want. It's easier if people learn how to handle the negativity. Because when players don't call out what is wrong with the game and just leave, the players who remain are sooner or later going to be affected. Either the company behind the game will charge for every single thing from those players (like Rockstar is doing with GTA Online) or the online will slowly die and the company will leave the game behind (like Ubisoft does with almost every game).
So, while I get the point you're trying to make, this feedback is the kind of thing that makes games moving forward. Just look at what happened to War Thunder this month

  • @talentniklas9864

I don't really get the hate. There are also points that sucks in Aoe 2 that Aoe 4 does way better.
    For example:
--> Late game is so much better in Aoe 4 than in Aoe 2, because you will run out of gold if you don't have relics. You mostly fight with poor units and sell food and wood to get gold. In Aoe 4 there are so many possibilities to get gold (neutral market, specific civ boni or holy site)
--> Cities are so ugly in Aoe 2. Most people will use normal buildings as walls instead of real walls. Aeo 4 does feel more natural. You now build walls with walls how it is supposed to be.
--> And even though there are still much lesser civs in Aoe 4. They really have a much more unique playstyle and features than the civs in Aoe 2.
--> In Aoe 2 you are stuck in the dark age for too long.
--> You cannot control more than 60 units at once.
--> In Aoe 2 I miss features like building rams with infantary units or positioning archers on stone walls.
--> At least naval is less boring in Aoe 4 than in Aoe 2.
--> The holy sites are a good addition.
--> I also like the fact that there is much lesser micro in Aoe 4 (dodging archers or mangonels). Now stradegy and the countersystem is more important than micro-management.
