That's a fair assumption, the problem you run into is that most large ballistics have low accuracy and while they're great against large targets the conquest can mount hurricanes to deal with those. For a fleet that's reliant on one ship like this you need weapons accurate enough to deal with smaller targets, which immediately narrows your choices down to mjolnir and gauss. In this case I think it's worth skipping support doctrine. I've been running Conquest in most of my fleets with somewhat unorthodox build. Point defence AI, slap tactical laser in every small PD slot you can find. Rest built in mods to improve the shields and range of weapons. Add ballistic rangefinder. If you can spare the points, add mods to improve survivability. One broadside with Mark IX and Haephestus (or dual Mjolnirs) and medium slots with medium slots filled with heavy autocannons. This even the range of every one of these weapons. Medium Energy slot - Ion beam will do. Second broadside, filled with flak if I can afford the points. Missiles... Whatever you fancy. I'm paranoid about ammo so I fill everything with pilums. It is... surprsingly not terrible, because Conquest can spam these in huge amount, enough to eventually overwhelm most ships. This kind of setup gives me a ship that strips shields incredibly fast - tactical lasers apply constant pressure and can act as PD when needed. All autocannons strip shields very quickly and all this combined with Haephestus ensures good anti-armour punch still, mostly thought sheer volume. Now, it won't survive long when under fire, because Conquest is a glass cannon... But that is why I always keep my Eagles to be the anvil - each built with with shield and range iproving mods. 2 hypervelocity driver, 1 mauler, 2 grav beams, 1 ion. Rest goes for burst PD and salamanders or any other missile you fancy. Won't kill anything fast, but it will eventually win against almost anything except Paragon or Radiant. Eagles built this way tend to outlast any foe.
