  • My impressions of the new 2021 Specialized Status. In this review I have a look at the design, kinematics and my riding impressions so far. My thoughts on the mullet setup and and who's it for.
    _____________
    The new Specialized Status is a long travel mullet bike (29'' front wheel and a 27.5" rear). It's designed as a modern freeride/enduro bike. Full aluminum frame with a descent parts kit with a bargain price tag. But who's it for? And is it any good?

    Your bike really inspired me to make some changes on my bike. I’m now running full 27.5 with a 180mm Yari fork, single speed and 50mm riser bars with the stem at the lowest position. Makes my s4 feel more like a s3, but with the longer wheelbase. Can’t wait to see how it is at the park after winter! Also dropped the weight down to 34lbs from 39lbs

    Thanks for the comprehensive ride review Mike!
    There's about 3 of these floating around my area underneath young pinners and I'm in the market for an enduro.
    Thinking about this as an option. I was thinking I hold your pro's list pretty high on my list of important attributes... The only thing stopping it being the perfect package for me is the pedalling.. I like to beat strava climb times on the way up and be a train wreck when I get there - and then try and beat strava times on the way down about 50% of the time. Too competitive..
    Short list at the moment is pretty broad:
    New Capra
    Status
    Norco sight
    Meta.
    The only solution is having like 7 bikes... So far we're at 3... The enduro will be 4....
    Thanks again mate, good video!

    I have the Status ST 140mm S2. Its a super fun bike. After watching your video I'll definitely give the high setting a try. I found it is in fact a bit low in some circumstances.
    I think the wheel set up works well for me as I'm not a tall guy (1.73m). Having that extra clearance at the back helps a lot on those 'oh sh*t!' moments plus give you additional space for playing with the bike.
    I'm keen on checking the upgrades you made to the bike. I am definitely want to get rid of the SX cassette. It weights a ton!

  • @letsgo_inc

    Just picked one up. The unique geo and insane value made it stand out against more popular choices. Aggressive and strong enough to work as a budget race and bike park machine while being more playful than more popular options. Initial impressions are very good. The S2 fits me like a glove (5'5") and the short chainstays are noticeable. Given how long and low it is, that front wheel comes up easily. Seated climbing seems fine, no worse than the lower stumpys I've ridden and the climb switch fixes all of that anyways. It is also beautiful in person and actually rare/unique...which appeals to me.
    Overall, the Status sits in this weird place where the Stumpy and especially the Stumpy EVO are more versatile bikes that are better for most people. Plus they can be had for cheaper. Meanwhile, competitive racers will take the Enduro or even a Stumpy EVO. The Status offers more capability than the average Stumpy, more value than the EVO and more fun than the Enduro...a mix that only really appeals to a certain kind of rider.

    • @letsgo_inc
      @letsgo_inc Před 11 měsíci +1

      @@prawnis The biggest one is the reach (horizontal distance between bars and bb). The S2 is at 437mm and the S3 is at 462mm. Anything over 440mm starts to feel long and stretched out to me so I couldn't ride an S3.
      The increase in reach also results in an increase in wheelbase and a slightly higher stack (bar height basically). So the Status basically gets a longer and longer front end as it grows...which can get pretty weird in the largest sizes.
      500mm reach, crazy long wheelbase but extremely short 426mm chainstays...not sure how that would ride.

      It's on the EU market. I'm from Sweden and got the bike from UK. I've seen them in Germany, Sweden, Uk etc. I would not go with a 27.5 in the front without other modification, the BB would be to low. If you went up 20 mm or so in fork suspension travel it might not upset the geometry to much but without looking into it I can't recommend it.

    First ride on mine and the front kept washing out on the berms. Really have to shift the weight forward. Agree on the tyres, they are heavy and suck. I did a lot of peddling and it's not that bad, will need bigger quads. The jumping is by far the best. makes it awesome.

    How is the bike on flat land riding with let's say my kids 6 years old along the canal. Is a good all around bike ?

      @42creativestudio51  Před rokem

      It depends on what you're used to. To me the Status (160) was not a great pedaling platform but not terrible either. To ride around with the kids it will be fine.

    • @42creativestudio51
      @42creativestudio51  Před 3 lety

      I've only tested the DHF/Assegai combo so in EXO+ casing. Tires depend so much on personal preference and local riding condition/riding style. My favorite combo in general are DHR II in the rear and Assegai in the front. Casing depends on what you need, I usually go for EXO+, a lot stronger than EXO but still not super heavy. If you need more protection you can always go for the DD option.

    This bike would be absolutely perfect with a shimano build kit and maybe a slightly longer chain stay

    • @42creativestudio51
      @42creativestudio51  Před 3 lety +1

      With the price you could upgrade the build kit over time, the longer chainstays will be hard to change though ;). I'm personally glad it has shorter chainstays, if I wanted a faster bike I would get an Enduro or a Meta or something, this bike is much more playful, and a little slower, than those bikes.

    • @Nickporter17
      @Nickporter17 Před 3 lety

      Chainstay feels good for playfulness. This is not a racey bike anyway, so longer would just make it more of a typical enduro.
