I love your saying “not everything is going to be a banger” , sometimes we expect travel to be 100% wonderful, and forget that it’s about experience, not perfection. Things appear good only because other things are not so good - contrast is what gives us those perceptions. If everything was ‘wonderful’ then soon everything would lose its wonder.

You must be in a bad patch. I loved Da Nang. All the things you hated, I found really fascinating, and exciting. From the beautiful beaches, with the "China Beach" history, to the skyscraper hotels along the beach, giving it a Miami Beach vibe, to the brilliantly lighted buildings and night, and the many fascinating bridges. There are several wonderful museums-- one about the history of the ancient dynasty that ruled the area, one that is a city museum, and then most fascinating was the Vietnam War/Ho Chi Minh Museum, that gives an entirely different perspective on the whole Vietnam War, which they call the American War, and features moving stories about the massacre at My Lai. And also includes a re-creation of Ho Chi Minh's house. I found that museum fascinating. The Marble Mountains was also extremely fun as you seem to agree. And yes, the Ba Na Hills are a theme park, but still having an entire medieval French village on the top of a remote mountain in Vietnam is pretty cool, and it is quite charming. The Golden Hands bridge has a lot of tourists, but it is still pretty fun to see. I just found the entire Da Nang experience to be wonderful.

    Oh Paddy,
I am so disappointed that you did not gel with Da Nang.
Before the Vietnam government decided to take away long term visas - as a knee jerk reaction to COVID - I was going to retire in Da Nang. Perhaps because you were not looking at Da Nang from the retirement living point of view for a foreigner in Vietnam it did not click for you. The beauty of Da Nang is that it is a VERY livable mid-size city of 1.1 million people. Whereas, Saigon is super crowded and polluted with a population of a whopping 9 million people and Ha Noi with 5 million inhabitants. After a month of visiting many parts of Vietnam, I found that Da Nang was the most livable, ( because it was the least noisy and polluted ) with access to the beautiful South China sea. They call Da Nang the Miami of South East Asia. Also, of the many Vietnam cities that I visited (other than Phu Quoc island) Da Nang had the freshest air because of the constant sea breeze. Furthermore, in Da Nang, you also have access to the nearby mountains to escape into the nature, and there is a healthy sprinkle of ex-pats living there. When I made the decision to retire in Da Nang (now aborted), it was for all of the above reasons with the following MOST important additional reason, which was drivability - Driving a scooter / motorbike in the super packed and dense city streets of Saigon and HaNoi freaked me out - I just could not gel with that never ending intense traffic. However, in Da Nang, I found the street traffic more civilized and less dense and the drivers were more street friendly. Plus, the Da Nang street infrastructure allows for wide paved streets with easy parking.
So Paddy, I understand that you did not gel with Da Nang from a travel blogger point of view, but perhaps if you relooked at Da Nang as a possible livable retirement destination - you would give it a thumbs up ? If not, please let us know which Vietnam place would you say is the best retirement destination (obviously let us know once you finish your travel series in Vietnam).
    Thanks,
    Martin

Actually I loved this video even though I personally love Danang and have spent months in that city over the past 5 years. I respect your honesty and as a non-stop traveller I totally understand your point at the end - it's about chemistry. It might be the most famous place in the world but if it doesn't click for you, it just doesn't - and that also applies in reverse. That is actually why I love travel - because it is personal and surprising. You never now what is going to happen - best thing to do though is to have interactions - put yourself out there - that is when the magic happens.Just go and have your own unique experience, good or bad.
The reason I love it is because of what happened to me there on my very first day during Tet in February 2018. Everything was closed and I arrived early in the morning. My hotel still let me check in at 7 am! As I left the hotel to find a place to eat I met an elderly French-Canadian having a smoke on the patio. We chatted briefly and he told me I would end up loving this hotel, especially the staff - this was his third trip back - to the same hotel - he just said that when I got to know the staff, I would understand. Hmmm, that made me curious. Then I went out to look for a coffee. After 20 minutes I found probably one of the only places open. The old man sitting out front - was actually the owner, not a customer, and there was only one other chair beside him, so I sat down. I asked him if there was coffee and without a word he got up and brought me the most delicious coffee I have ever had, old style Vietnamese coffee with the dripping pot and condensed milk. Then he left again. When he returned he brought me a little tea. Then he left again. When he returned he brought me a shot of something and motioned for me to drink it with him, bottoms up! Then he brought another shot. Then he kept mentioning it was Tet so we should drink another shot. I was pissed and it was only 8:30 am, drinking with a complete stranger, who was also the owner, who provided all these drinks for free and wouldn't let me pay. As I left, I asked him what the sign meant on the door to the cafe - he said "closed." That was my introduction to Danang, so I could never not like it after that. Oh, and I fell in love with the staff at that hotel - we all ended up going out often for karaoke and dinner and drinks.....and that was just the first week I was there. I was working in China at the time so as soon as I got back I was already planning my next trip which was a month later.....and then a month after that. Finally I just moved there. For me it was all the great people I met in Danang and all the good times I had there that made it my fav city. Just lucky the day I arrived, coloured everything that happened afterwards....

I went to Da Nang five years ago. Because of the crowds, I skipped all of the tourist attractions in Da Nang, and I just enjoyed the beach, food and drinks. I spread my time over the three cities: Danang, Hoi An, and Hue. I enjoyed Hoi An the most. I stayed at a hotel on the riverside so it was very quiet. The old town was very crowded, but I went there only when I wanted to. It was a quiet trip overall, but that was what I wanted. I had a great time during my visit to these places. Paddy, I first subscribed to your channel when you started the adventure in Vietnam. I guess being an expat living here I was interested to see what and how you were going to receive this amazing country on your journey! I’ve not done a motorcycle trip from top to bottom But I did backpack for six months in Vietnam, Cambodia and Lao. 95 % of my journey was truly incredible and not all Cities, province’s, villages were what I expected! I was fortunate I had heaps of time and if there was a place I didn’t like I simply packed up and moved on to the next town!
Vietnam places I visited either by motorcycle, bus, boat, train or plane was truely a life time experience.
I had the luxury of so much time on my hands to soak up all aspects of local and cultural life of Vietnamese people moreover in the country side villages as you are doing now. But I didn’t have to produce CZcams videos unlike you and for me that would be so demanding on you knowing you had a timeframe to stick to!
Regarding Da Nang wasn’t good for you that’s ok… So move on to the next place rather than a subtle rant criticising the place which fortunately for vietnam is a huge tourist destination and a favourite of mine personally 😉 in my opinion!
I feel the content of your last few videos have slipped a little in terms of exciting and a little boring my opinion only mate. Personally I think your time frame has put so much pressure on you to entertain us all, increase subscription base, clicks, likes etc and just maybe you need to reset!
I’m not an editor of content so I can’t for one second understand how difficult it must be to do what you do.
Deep breath reset everything and go again. Stay cool 😎

I liked it! I'm not a great early riser either. I've seen a couple of your northeast Thailand videos where you and Dreamy were on the fritz and this was nothing like them. So no worries, good job sticking with it and nice video and editing. I think also there are some culture differences I'm seeing as you go to different parts of Vietnam and the tourism part for locals versus foreigners is definitely a bit at odds lol. The dragon was hilarious 😂

I remember someone made a comment about what you would think of Da Nang a couple of videos back and I predicted you wouldn't like it. I get the feeling you prefer rural places where you can commune with nature vs concrete jungles (sensory overload). I was so anticipating your reaction at the Golden Hand Bridge after you made the comment expecting it to be tranquil, as I knew it likely wasn't going to be based upon the time of year and such (for all touristy destinations in Vietnam...don't go on weekends, holidays, or when the kids are out of school!)

I was lucky enough to visit Sun World Bana Hills in 3/2020, when tourism was grinding to a halt. There was barely anyone there, and a wonderful experience (for me). Seeing your video of the packed bridge makes me think that I would not have enjoyed is nearly as much visiting when you did.

  • @HarishChouhan
    @HarishChouhan Před rokem +1

You need to compare Da Nang with other cities. The reason people wake up early is they want to get some workout done before the sun rises and it gets hot. Also, regarding Bana Hills, no peaceful time to see the bridge with hands, unless you live there for a night and then wake up and get the first cable car to the bridge.

Read Dennis Gordon's comment if anyone wants to know about Da Nang. Don't jump to hasty judgement after just watching Paddy's video. Da Nang wasn't for Paddy. That's his personal choice, who cares? Most of Vietnamease people love Da Nang and many foreigners do, that's good enough. Of course, we don't want Da Nang to be like Payttaya and I believe it won't.

It’s easy to lose faith in locations, when it’s jammed with locals, but my 5 nights in Da Nang and it’s surrounding areas were great, admittedly nowhere near as busy too. I would just put this down to being unlucky, and a little tiresome in your case, but all the same, thanks for bringing it to us, as you see it, with you all the way mate, take care 🙏🏻 (ps, did you go see the huge white marble Buddha on the hillside, overlooking Da Nang bay, I found that stunning.) 🙏🏻🙏🏻

I loved Da Nang. Compared to our yearly trip to Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang is a few gears slower with amazing weather with a brush of Korea through it. We elected to stay at The Pavillion right on My Khe beach, which was fantastic. Ventured to the city a couple of time though preferred it along the beach, some amazing restaurants about with the bonus that Hoi An is a mere 30 minutes by car away. I do recall getting up for my early morning walks and noticing a heap of activity early also.
BaNa Hills wasn't for me. Just felt like what it looked like - an over-propped tourist attraction. The bridge was interesting, but we were underwhelmed when we got to the top.....

I loved this video bc this is the reality of travelling. Your mood + perspective effect your experience. We all have different experiences. Some days are highs, other can be low. I don’t enjoy crowded spaces or big cities so I reckon I would feel similar. When you get spoiled with open nature and quaint towns, you lose appreciation for the over crowded spaces. When there are gems to see, it’s just time to move on. Thks for sharing 💜

I was going to stay in Da Nang for 1 month but I was hesitant for this specific reason. I like more of that local experience so that’s what I will be looking for. I don’t normally love crowds and chaos but I fell in love with it all in Bangkok so who knows.
I’m not sure what experiences I will have in Vietnam but I look forward to everything it brings my way. It’s ok not to like every place you go, you’re only human. Enjoy your travels and continue to be great! 😊

Da Nang beach is very long . One section is reserved for swimming and beach games , nice , clean and well kept . The other small section is for fishing boats to discharge their daily catches . So don`t mix them up . Plus a lot of cool hidden gems along the coast to Hoi An ( to the South ) and to Son Tra peninsula ( to the North ) . Don`t you know that the Vietnamese people only go to the beach either early in the morning (from 5 AM to 8 AM ) or at sunset ( from 4h30 PM to 6h30 PM ) to avoid the sun . The rest of the day ( from 8h30 AM to 6 PM) is reserved to Western tourists and expats for their sunbath ( the Westerners love to get suntan and are not afraid to get skin cancer ). You need to stay at least 2 weeks in Da Nang and the surrounding areas to discover all the things that city and its outskirts are offering to the visitors . Don`t jump too fast to an erroneous conclusion like you did for Cat Ba Island . Actually if you go to Disneyland or Disneyworld in the USA now , the crowd is even worse than in Bana Hills .

@@FreakBodyFarm You are right . That guy paddy doyle had told a lot of falsenesses about VN . He did it on purpose to create a negative image of our country in the eyes of the foreign tourists . He also said that one can't find cold beer in VN , which is a pure lie . When he was in the Mekong delta , he blamed unfairly an old couple for scamming him , because of his ignorance and lack of research ( he went to a wrong place located at 130 km away from the spot he wanted to visit ) . I really didn't understand why he wanted to tarnish the image of VN , even he was very welcome and helped by our people at the beginning of his trip in our country .
