ROUGH SAILING to the Mozambique Channel | Sailing Florence Ep. 117

  • It is a fast and bumpy ride as Florence crashes her way through the waves on the way south from Seychelles. This ocean passage is notorious for its rough weather and potentially boat breaking conditions near to Madagascar. It is with no small amount of trepidation that we set out to sail this first leg of our 2000 mile offshore ocean passage to South Africa via the Mozambique channel.
We have been sailing around the world for over 5 years after setting off from England in 2016 on board our 37ft sail boat Florence. Join us as we share the highs and lows of travelling around the world by boat, Sailing offshore across the Oceans and exploring remote locations with our own little tiny house. Boat life out at sea on the ocean and off the grid.

Hi Matt and Amy sailing Florence I watch a lot of sailing CZcams solo sailors etcetera but of all the sailors I rate your channel the most favorable because you guys spend more time showing us people stuck at home and in our day today boring lives sometimes you show and broadcast actual sailing on Bluewater and Island Adventures credit to you making it so adventurous and interesting I also own a 37 foot sailing boat Wynnum Manly Brisbane is my base most of all stay safe and cannot wait to watch another episode thank you so much

Barry (Adventures of an old sea dog) made the same point about the camera not giving a true reflection of the sea state. In his latest video he had installed his camera on a gimbal. It really works. Made me feel queasy watching it! Well done by the way.

Over 15 years ago I made this same passage. But I did the passage at the opposite time of year, eventually arriving in Richard's Bay in June.
In the area where you were becalmed I went through the biggest lightening storm I have ever experienced, anywhere. It lasted for almost a whole day with lightening strikes hitting the ocean all around me. Scary stuff.
After leaving Mayotte I went through an unsettling area of the ocean and experienced the biggest waves I have ever seen. They were about 7 meters high and mostly gentle swells. I am not sure what caused them but a brisk E~SE trade wind had the crests curling and breaking occasionally.
May all your troubles melt like lemon drops.

Somehow my brain keeps humming Britannia Rules The Waves! Your descriptions of the vagaries of wind are spot on. It is so often too much or too little. We are so used to controlling our environment with our computers, air conditioned autos, and homes. I always feel that sailing teaches me that Mother Nature is in control. You have deal with it, go with it. Those sublime days when the wind is blowing on a beam reach , the sea state is kind, the sun is shining and you are sailing are unforgettable experiences.
