- Sailing into Namibia at dawn with the sun rising above the sand dunes was magical. Just inland we found an abandoned town in the desert. The height of luxury in its day, it is now being reclaimed by the sand. Join us as we explore.
We have been sailing around the world for 6 years after setting off from England in 2016 on board our 37ft sail boat Florence. The first thing I said when I saw you have posted a new vid is YAY out loud, and my wife asked what's going on ! I clicked like 2 seconds into the first advert. Ive been to Namibia many times and it's a magical place. Spectacular footage. For me, the only this that tops and African sunrise, is an African sunset.
Love Namibia! lived there for 7yrs. miss it everyday.
Please don’t ever stop with your videos ♥️♥️
As a Brit who has lived in South Africa for many years, I have been fortunate enough to visit Namibia quite a few times. A stunning place and without doubt, one of my favourites. Can't wait to go back again.
Matt and Amy..two exceptional individuals!!
Hi Amy and Matt! I really enjoyed this video. The videography was outstanding! You’ve become quite adept with your storylines and videos. You’re not just vloggers anymore, but film writers and directors! I also really loved your choice of music for this video. It really enhanced your visual presentation. I’m relatively new to your channel so I’m binging to catch up. All the best!
Definitely! Excellent guys!!
My friend got life changing injury in a car crash in Namibia. He was lucky to survive given how remote the area they crashed in was. Cracking footage guys!
Simply stunning. Beautiful pro standard video.
The diamond town just needs a good vacuuming and a lick or two of paint, and it will look fine. 😉😊
Love your work.
Oh wow, I remember visiting Nambia on a trip when I was a child years ago and even sat in the same bath! Though I was told by the tour guide to get out incase I damaged it.
Fantastic stuff. Professional level videography and editing. Matt and Amy, been following you for a few years now, keep it up! Can't wait for the Atlantic crossing and back to the Caribbean. Are you stopping in at St. Helena and Ascension?
Fascinating video. Such a stark contrast to typical sailing videos. So glad you explored here and showed us how unique this coast line is.
You guys really loved southern Africa , it shows on your faces
Glad you guys keep your backpacks with you whenever you leave the vehicle
Mopani is a tree root, usually found under water, thus the fishy taste / smell. Mopani is commonly found in the Aquarium trade and used to decorate tanks, as the wood doesn't rot quickly and provides great shelter for fish and releases tannins as the wood breaks down over time. The Mopani worms, I assume are worms found in those same tree roots as they are harvested. (Harvesting the bugs came before the harvesting of the wood.)
I have been watching you two since the beginning and you are one of my two favorite sailing channels. Great sailing and high quality video. However, this episode has what I think is your best videography that I have seen. The scenes in the desert were stunning and beautiful. Well done!
Um a, I wonder wot tother one is ? 😆
@@eugenio1542 Free Range Sailing. They have recently moved ashore and are homesteading now.
Over the past 6 years...you VIDEOS now have a truly CINEMATIC QUALITY.
Congratulations.
Keep 'em coming.
Welcome to Namibia! Wishing you an awesome time here. Safe Travels and enjoy everything my Beautiful country has to offer. Enjoy the HIke!
Hi thank you so much for bringing pleasant memories back to me, I grew up in Walvis Bay, the last time I visited Luderitz was way back in 1986, a very good friend of mine was the pastor of the German Church on the hill in Luderitz, yip pleasant memories
Great post my friends. What an adventure ✨️ 🌞🌴⛵️
You guys are making me commit to getting my boat sea ready. Great stuff
This is one of the most astounding videos I've seen in a while. The visuals, the history, the mystery, the locals. This is like a discovery channel show now.
Nice video guys. I think you captured the ghost town better in video than we did in pictures.
Cool that you visited where the Tame Impala album art was shot :)
Why you two are not further up the CZcams ladder is beyond me !!!!
Your videos are top stuff and good to See you Matt is wearing some aussie hat :)
Hi Amy and Matt,
Ive been dipping into your videos since Simon my Adelaide (the other SA) dentist told me about you. I was brought up on a yatch...either as my parents built it ( and three others)in our garden in Johannesburg, and then after they sold the house and took us out of school to sail around the world.
Well, Mum got so seasick so often that that only happened in bits and bobs as they ducked back to Cape Town to build a second and then a third Agbwe. So we sailed from Durban, maputo, Isle Europa ( OMG...you missed that place...the diving visibility in April was mayby 40m), then Madagascar, nosi be, Seychelles (8 months there), and so its been amazing seeing your footage. WE also sailed back via some stunning amirante islands, Nosi be area again, then Mayotte, Moroni and the other one. Then Nacala, Mocambique island.
I had to leave the boat as I had not been doing my correspondence course from Oxford very attentively ( doing school work at the cabin table at sea didnt really work and there was too much fun to be had when not making passages) So I had to fly back to Cape Town to weekly boarding school and my gran's flat. Bummer, but I did avoi So I got back to high school for the very last term after being out of school for 18 months. I scraped through my year....even Afrikaanse that I had willingly " given up for life". Then again I joined my parents on Agbwe 1 from Cape Town to Brazil via beautiful st Helena and Ascension. This time I was in my matric year so I chose to fly back and finish off my schooling after getting to Brazil. My very first international flight. The after finishing my Masters degree I joined them on Agbwe 2 with a boyfriend, to sail from St Lucia up to Florida in 1982.
I can just sit and do this "armchair/screen" sailing very happily but I feel it all, I know it all...the feeling of it, the smell of that cold Atlantic outside Cape Town, those stunning mountains, the colour of the water in the Seychelles and those rocks, the night watches and OMG we also had an Aries. We adored our Aries as we had hand steered from Durban to the Seychelles where we ordered one and installed that magic piece of engineering. Its a marvel to watch.
We had no radio to reach the outside world, except to receive some BBC forecasts, No screens of any sort, only an echo sounder and a log on the end of a line of string. Sextant and chronometer and lots of calcs after each sunsight...site? We had no oven, no fridge. only a parafin two burner stove. The freezer never worked, so became a cupboard for disgusting margerine. We charged our batteries for lights and the echo sounder, from an alternator connected to the prop shaft so as we sailed we let the prop go around we got a trickle charge all the time. As we came and went into and out of ports there seemed to have been no requirement to connect with the port authorities. And Sechelles did not charge us for staying.
Agbwe 1 was a 46' Alan Buchanan designed steel cutter ketch with graceful lines and a 60' main mast. iloved that boat, as one does.
You do an absolutly professional job of your filming and editing. Your compostions are stunning and I love your little close up shots of this and that...like the sail hanks and so on. What a thing to have a drone!! Does your drone have a name???
Cheeers, Caroline Johnson McIntyre
Amazing, stunning....... not much else to say. I'm so glad you've called in on Namibia......I'd love to visit but sadly that's not likely so I'm glad I've been able share your amazing adventures and memories.
Loved seeing you wearing the Queensland cap Matt 👍🏻 (marketplace in this vid) half a world away! 🇦🇺😉
Excellent documentary. I am from South Africa and don't see much true information given. Well done. Will follow you
Wonderfull video. You make my day every time, thanks
Hi Amy and Matt, what marvellous videoing! (Ron Marchand)
You were so lucky to see the desert horses.
Excellent video and music, always look forward to watching your fortnightly videos. Thanks
Thanks Matt and Amy! Great video...Brought back so many memories of my teenage years (late 80s) when my parents ran the only 2 hotels in Luderitz at the time (Bayview and Kapps) while I was off to boarding school in Windhoek, but came home to Luderitz once per year....If you have not already left Luderitz, please ask a local Ovambu person if a man named Silas still lives there (he would be quite elderly by now). He used to teach me the Ovambu language and their culture when we worked together at the Bayview Hotel off-sales liquor store during school holidays before I moved to Cape Town for engineering studies. Many years ago, one of the last residents to leave Kolmonskop Town (an older man) used to perform tours and sing in the town hall. His voice and the acoustics were phenomenal.
Not too long ago, a couple traveling by van visited here. Their site is "The Newby's." You might want to see their youtube channel. You always have such beautiful videos. I wish you a good crossing across the Atlantic. Best to you, Jane, Philadelphia
Mopani worms (beetle larvae) and millet beer.
Had much of both. I found the beer to be very yeasty. Maybe that's the acidic tang you tasted.
There are large contrasts in Africa but also many things that are the same.
Wonderful video. Thank you. Continued safe sailing for you.
Wow, what a place. I know very little of Namibia, now I am very intrigued. You two have come a long way in your videography and story telling. This video felt like a huge step up in production, I really enjoyed it.
One Life, One Search,
Shane
Namibia is like central Australia...but with much more spectacular mountains and Africa's wild animals that eat you or just are part of the big 5. you need to get there.
@@carolinejohnsonartist5650 heheheh, thanks. Sounds incredible
I remember when Delos was here four years or so ago. It is interesting to see how much more sand has accumulated inside the buildings. Such an interesting location. Thank you for sharing.⏳💎
Wow Amy and Matt 😮
It is great to see that you guys will try it.👍
Great escape video with great accompaniment - Worth the wait.
I was watching a show about abandoned places last night in my hotel and this was one of them! Cool (:
Another excellent video, keep it up the quality is fantastic and a huge difference to when you first left England. Forget about freezing in the artic come back to Australia and see the 75% you missed
I think I would need a couple of those orange beers before trying one of those bugs! lol. Great video. Safe sailing.
Thank you for this episode guys, I really enjoyed it. Awesome!!!!
If I could vote for the best video of the month on youtube this would get my vote, well done⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️
Yeah! Finally a new adventure to watch!🇨🇦
Great video, thanks guys. Keep them coming.
The wood not being rotten (as you point out) is no-doubt due to the sheer dryness of the climate.
You were lucky to still see buildings before they become completly buried in the sand.
I was thinking, there may already be some that you didn't see.
Fantastic video as always x
Great job Amy and Matt! Always enjoy your videos for years.
Another great one, really enjoy you guys.
Wow. That was amazing. Thank you
wow!!!...stunning episode! - well done and well said!!

Very interesting and well filmed too. Thanks
An excellent watch..👍
Great content guys.
Brilliant episode! I've been looking forward to this episode since you said you were going to Namibia. Such an interesting place in sitting amongst the dunes. Hope you enjoyed Fish River Canyon - we were pretty blown away by its scale and I'm looking forward to seeing where else you visited in Namibia.
Hi guys that was amazing that a banded town thank you for bringing it to us Cliff from Logan city Queensland Australia
Your videos just keep getting better and better. So interesting and so beautifully created.
Great bit of history and geology, love it, do more, strange places.
Fantastic!

Fantastic......Nice work .....Nice video.
I normally watch CZcams on my phone but this episode I shared with my wife on the big screen tv. Wow absolutely stunning video
Hi. What a stunning episode . You are on another level with your cinematography and production. It’s great to come along with your exploration of these new destinations. Thanks
Lovely video as always and intriguing how far people will go for money, even though it is just an abstract concept...
Thanks for taking us to places I'll never go to...and with your infectious zest for life 👍
🌎⛵
FANTASTIC!
Wow! Loved the Aloe 'tree' and am still oddly impacted by the sand in the buildings. No rot, there's still paint on the walls, yet- the rooms are filled with sand? Juxtaposition- very distonic to the eye & brain! Thanks for the video work- amazing as always!
Horses 🐎 Ostriches and the Squirrel were amazing shoots. The landscape of the rock formation looked like as if you were roaming on Mars especially with the drone shots.
Thanks for taking me with you in Nambia to see what I missed , You guys loved Nambibia as much as we did . So much space . So much Orange an Yellow , like Planet Mars perhaps ? ?
Fascinating💕
Wow. This is why you’re channel is so top notch. The ratio between sailing and travel (maybe 70/30?) feels just right for me. We’ll done!
Oh money. Amazing what humans have done and decided is important. I seem to recall Delos visiting the same place a few years ago. Cool story. Thx for sharing.
Wow guys👏👏👏. When you guys finish cruising, hopefully in many years in the future, you really need to get into natural world videography/documentary making. Your production is nothing but top drawer. You have one hell of a portfolio. I always look forward to next time as nobody beats your style. Thank you for all the hours of hard work you put in to making these videos what they are. Stay safe, T
