- This clip shows the injury time minutes of the Play Off Second Division First Leg between 6th placed Sunderland and 3rd placed Newcastle at Roker Park. The game was a battle with very few chances until the final moments....
The pairing was made after a final day of the season that seen Newcastle and Sunderland lose whist Swindon and Blackburn drew.
As usual, there was more action off the pitch than there was on it as Newcastle, backed by 6000 official fans, had pockets of supporters in various places around Roker Park hence numerous police escorts from around the ground and into the visitors Roker End.

I remember it well. A Sunderland steward got arrested for battling with Newcastle fans in a melee down in the Roker End/Clock Stand corner of the pitch after the penalty. The only time I've ever seen a steward get nicked by the polis.

as a neutral looked a v dodgy penalty but it should surely have been retaken. newcastle no. 4 starts his run up before the penalty taker.

Actually howling here. I remember Wembley. It could have been 8-0 to Swindon! Nowt to brag about really. Especially the following seasons relegation and the 4 relegations that have followed.

Pure entertainment and I don't support either side.
I was 12. In the sunderland paddock as I couldn't get a ticket for the away end. Within 15 mins we were escorted to the away end when trouble broke out. Fearless back then! Good days.
What happened in second leg?
Sunderland won 2-0, somehow got promoted despite losing the final, got relegated the following season and lived in Newcastle's shadow since. Although I suspect you already know this.
Sunderland beat the geordie mag fuck ups 2-0 and few minutes from the end newcastle fans invaded pitch to try and have the game stopped to get a replay. Ha ha spoilt little maggots were beaten fair and square.

I'll never forget Aitken sticking his fist up too the Fulwell end after the save. Such a shame it came back to bite him on the arse in the 2nd leg 🤣
He never turned up for both Play Off Legs. Very disappointing from him. Sunderland were the better side, but we'd go on to have a glorious time 2 years later
