I will never ever forget this game.....superb atmosphere. We ended up losing the 2nd replay at Leeds but what memories. Glad to be part of the Burnden era.

I remember Barry Davies introducing the teams to this match praising Newcastle’s young up and coming , future England right back Irving Natrass . Peter Thompson taught him what it’s like to play against a proper left winger and tore him to shreads with all his trickery and nutmegs , he is the best crosser of a ball that I have ever seen .Along with John Robertson at Forest they were brilliant when they got to the by-line and rarely ever waisted a cross . What a fantastic player he was I would’ve loved to seen him at his peak in the 60’s, such a shame Sir Alf went with wingless wonders with his class not used .

My team Bolton ended up buying Alan Gowling not long afterwards and he formed a great striking partnership with Frank Worthington when we returned to the first division.
Got to admit though, goal of the match was Super-Mac's volley strike, that was simply sublime

I was among the Bolton fans, level with him when he scored that great goal. As the ball hit the back of the net the Bolton fans went quiet, but I was clapping. A bloke beside me asked why I was clapping. I said "Well it was good, wasn't it". Great match on a cold day.

Remember going to this match with all the Blakelaw lads as a young 14 year old great day out there were thousands of geordies at the match we used to travel on the Moordale coaches always stopping at Selby services on the way down .SuperMac was my hero but I remember getting home and telling my Mam who is Black & White daft about the Left winger for Bolton called Thompson he was brilliant on the day she said he used to play for Liverpool but that he was getting on in years I remember saying he must of been brilliant at Liverpool as a young lad .

A 7 year old me sat in the Manchester Road stand with my parents just below where the tv gantry was on the roof and not far from the Bolton Directors Box. I'll forever be convinced that's my Mum you hear just as McDonald scored his second goal, possibly the 2nd best I ever saw at Burnden (Frank Worthington and THAT goal against Ipswich being the best).
I mentioned the Bolton Directors Box. As the crowd settled following Bolton's first goal it became obvious there was a medical emergency in the Directors Box. Later that evening it was confirmed that the Bolton director Jack Banks had passed away from a heart attack which occurred just as Bolton scored.

In the first game on valentine's day 76.The story goes, that Ian Greaves, (Bolton Manager) warned Big Sam and Paul Jones all week :: Dont let Super Mac use his left foot: and that happens, look at the expression on Barry Siddalls face. This was the game when Boltons Chairman Banks (a builder from Blackrod) had a heart attack during the game and died. All 3 games were on bbc. The replay at St James was on sportsnight. 0-0 aet 50.000. And the following Monday at Elland road Leeds was on tv as well. We lost 2-1 .i was 6 and remember the traffic from Bolton on the m62 was choca block. And that bad that we all parked on the hard shoulder on the motorway !! After those games it cost us promotion, as we just couldn't score and lost to Blackburn, Oxford United and York City at Burnden and West Brom got the Third promotion place. If: we had gone up that season 1975-76 to division one.im convinced we would have stayed longer: (as Thompson, Dunne,Morgan,R Greaves and Ritson would have need 3 years younger) than we did in 1977-78. Happy days. Who remembers in the tie before 4th round ,we took 20.000 to Huddersfield!!!

Bet you enjoyed it though Bruce, lot of nostalgia for Burnden but yeah, it was crumbling by then.
They were good times with games worth watching at affordable prices with the pubs close by afterwards.
These days its a six mile hike to a concrete bowl without a pub in sight, the club selling its own shit ale at astronomical prices, like everything else.
      Progress eh?
      Good luck.
