  • A friendly sparring bout between NIck and Artur. We have taught Artur for five years now, longsword, sword and buckler and sabre. More recently we have been working on his rapier skills. This was a very hot a humid training session, but still a good one.

    It's amazing how much of a difference it makes watching videos like this at 0.5 speed. I catch so many of subtleties I normally miss, such that when I watch them again in normal speed, I can't help but be amazed at the speed with which you guys can execute simultaneous offensive and defensive actions.

    if a guy with just a rapier fought against a guy with rapier and dagger, would the former one be at a disadvantage, or is it a matter of preference?

      I have heard some people argue that single rapier is just as effective, but I do not believe it and have never seen evidence of the fact. The addition of the dagger is a massive advantage in almost every situation. Simply put, it allows you to isolate attack and defence, rather than having to achieve both with a single weapon. It is a safer fighting style with a greater range of options, and additionally it gives good protection at those who close distance with you, as the dagger can be used offensively, as is seen a couple of times in this video. This close range defence is also excellent against other weapon users such as longsword.

      HEMA Instructor Nick Thomas thanks for clearing that up. what about bucklers? do you consider them better/worse than daggers?

    • @Nikos3000
      @Nikos3000  Před 10 lety +2

      iseeicyicetea Not so much better or worse, but a little different. The buckler is better suited to parrying cuts and therefore using against sideswords and other heavier bladed swords. The dagger is much better suited to displacing thrusts. I don't think it's any coincidence that the dagger largely replaced the buckler as the rapier became the most fashionable weapon of daily wear.

      HEMA Instructor Nick Thomas sooo..... why not rapier and buckler????? that will do much better at defense then a dagger.

      9gibsonlespaul See my previous post. Dagger is much better at defence when using swords that emphasise point work.

    I would love to practice european martial arts, but the closest to that we have here in Brazil are japonese kendo and kenjutsu that i dont like very much.

    Very interesting fight and video. What was the purpose of the dagger in the medieval era? Was it used in skirmishes where people could sneak a very small weapon and kill them? Was it used in military combat since they are cheaper to make than a regular sword? Also, were daggers used for civilian self-defense?

    • @willie_brydon
      @willie_brydon Před 10 lety +1

      If you're talking about fighting with rapiers, the dagger was often used instead of a buckler because it allows to "trap" the opponents blade so you can easily go in for a hit

    • @ChessdumyTV
      @ChessdumyTV Před 10 lety

      Im just talking about fighting with only a dagger in general. Thanks for the info though, very interesting! But, whats the purpose of using a dagger by itself. or perhaps something else? because i see it a lot.
      Was it used for civilian self defense? Was it used in combat since its cheaper to make than a regular sword? and finally, was it used for skirmishes since its smaller and harder to see, then you could hide it then take it out to quickly kill an enemy?

    • @Nikos3000
      @Nikos3000  Před 10 lety +2

      ***** The dagger was carried as a universal self defence weapon. Even when rapier and dagger was carried, the dagger was typically carried on the right side so that it could be drawn quickly with a pick grip for self defence. Imagine how long it takes to draw a rapier if you needed it quickly or when you were sat down, or in confined spaces. Then there is the issue of closing, grappling etc. A dagger provides good protection against that. It's not that a dagger is carried or used instead of a sword, it is the base line, carried for quick draw, close in fighting, offhand use.

      Onitsuka tiger ultimate 81 for me, and a few other models from the same brand for others. I have used them for many years and found them to be fantastic. I started using them maybe 6 or so years ago on the advice of some parkour guys.

    while fencing with a main-gauche, do you use a shorter blade than 42"?

    • @Nikos3000
      @Nikos3000  Před 10 lety

      No, in fact longer rapiers are well suited to rapier and dagger work. Really long rapiers can get a little cumbersome in solo use. I am using a 45" blade in this video, my preferred length. I have also commissioned a copy of an original 48.5" bladed rapier to be made, with matching dagger, that should be interesting.

    Nice. Some of those passes with multiple parries were very impressive. Controlled and purposeful rather than desperate flailing. I was wondering if you're stopping on the first touch, or if you have a beat to turn it into a double hit. Sometimes it look one way, sometimes the other; my eye isn't good enough to tell for sure.

    • @Nikos3000
      @Nikos3000  Před 10 lety

      We sometimes vary it, but as a rule we stop within one tempo of a hit landing. Though if the first strike is very good most will not try and strike back. Difficulty is always going with afterblows is it encourages people to always 'go for the point' and not defend.
