Then everyone thinks everyone on a bike is retarded and make their “scrape you off the road” comments. People put those idiots in road rage compilations with clips where the bike didnt do anything at all, thats why i got a dual sport lol
Even if the driver just put on their indicator as you approach, often times rider doesn't have time to change course or isnt in a position to do so. Despite the fact that Auto drivers do a lot of really stupid shit way too often, we shouldn't always blame them for the risks that riders take (myself included) when passing or lane splitting in steady moving traffic
@@Dwoodman596 If two cars are in a line, one of them is likely to change lanes. Its idiotic to think they won't. People changes all the time. To think you can fly by them and none pull out is foolish. You should always ALWAYS approach cars with caution.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! So refreshing having a rider calling out poor rider behavior, instead of just "blame the cager" crap. Everything you commented on, I 100% agreed with. And as far as predicting what a car is going to do, I've gotten really good at that. My job has me driving 50,000+ miles a year, so I have a lot of time to notice patterns. I have gotten proficient over the years, to where there are times that I can predict a driver's actions 5~10 seconds before they make any indication. Of course, you'll still have those other drivers that still throw something out of left field at ya.
I agree! I don't know why I watch these videos, maybe because riding season is over for me already but I always find myself in disagreement with the video commentary. I knew this guy Dan was different when he called out the 1 finger lane change in the first video clip. Flipping off a car is childish, useless and potentially dangerous. About as effective as muttering to yourself under your face shield. The only one effected is YOU. You are no longer a high functioning human when your limbic brain is raging. Stay calm and move on, you aren't going to "educate" other drivers or riders with your rage.
Hey dude just stumbled upon one of your old videos, what a difference you have made not only to your content and yourself but the lives of many motorbike riders, I'm from across the pond and appreciate the effort you put into everything you do, since watching your videos I've applied what I've learnt from them, your inspiring and educational and just wanted to let you know from one unknown voice to a voice of aspirations great work and keep it up❤ 🏍
Thank you for this. As a lifelong "cager" and a soon to be motorcyclist, I appreciate that you didn't blame every near miss on the Cagers. A lot of motorcyclists blame the cager and don't even realize that they share the blame.
I got to say and I'm not innocent, that most of the time it's the motorcyclist speeding. Because that usually means no time to react and in the blind spot
I've been riding almost five years now, but this was still an awesome and informative video. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to start riding. A lot of problems can be avoided just by riding more carefully in more populated areas/roadways, if you don't have any self control you probably shouldn't be riding.
Most of these incidents are just events where the rider needs to be considerate of others. If that was practiced, most if not all could have been evaded.
i just passed my MSF today, including all that i learned there and all the things you pointed out here, i feel like its been a very educational weekend lol
9:28 Parking lot.... The Van was passing a car coming into the parking lot.... And the car from the right was racing to get in front of that van.... Impatient people are the primary cause of accidents...
That is in Montreal Canada and unfortunately, this is how everyone drives here. If anyone thinks NYC is aggressive driving, come on down and hone in on your asshole skills...we'll make a master out of you...lol. Sadly, most car drivers and quite a few motorcyclists don't share the roads here...its like a free for all.
also I think the tire squaling was from the car coming from the right stepping on the brakes, can't say for sure ofcourse but looked like he came in pretty fast
I can't tell you how MANY near-miss and crash videos I've analyzed the same way you did, Dan, in order to teach myself how to spot danger traps and bad behavior creating those traps. The lack of defensive observation techniques shown in such videos has taught me how to be a cautious and more prepared motorcyclist. Bravo for making instructional videos like this one.
Great analysis, I recently discovered your channel and your videos have helped me greatly to increase my awareness while “driving” my bike. I have a Sportster Iron 883 Harley, it’s my first bike and I have been riding for almost 3 years now without any major incidents. Thanks and keep up the excellent work.
I think the tire squeal you heard in the parking lot with the car and van was actually from the car braking hard rather than the bike spinning it’s tire from acceleration, seemed like that lane the car was continuous in front of that building instead of into it possible the car was gonna keep going with no mind to intersections. Not sure what the Van was doing though 🤷🏼♂️
11:16 I think the driver in the Blue Honda (the one who almost nailed them) was fixated on the mini van. He was trying to beat him to get in front of him. He never even saw the motorcycle 🏍. Rewind it and watch it, he legit is trying to hurry up and hang the left to get in front of the mini van. They were very lucky.
I'm planning on getting a motorcycle soon and im so glad I found this video- Learning safety is always #1 priority because I'd rather not get slammed into pavement at 70-80 mph. Great video man :) Keep them coming so i can learn more
I have to say Dan, this is my first time seeing your channel. I have several seasons of riding under my belt, MSF...all that. This was an excellent reminder about motorcycle safety and road awareness. It is easy to find yourself getting lost in the ride. That sensation of confidence comes sooo much faster than any skill and 99.9% of any of the mistakes I hav made have been a result of someone being less aware than they should have been on my part or another. I like seeing this just before my riding season really gets started (snowed here last 2 days). Thank you for the reminder to be safe...I truely feel it will make a difference for many who have watched and I wanted you to know I feel it has made a difference for me. Thanks again!
Every motorcyclist should watch this! This type of stuff helps so much especially for those of us who can be a bit spontaneous at times. Thank you for the awesome content!
Thanks for the vids! I've been binge watching all of your videos because I'm getting ready to take the plunge and get into riding, and I've been doing "research" by watching your stuff to learn as much as I can before I sign up for my first beginner's course. Thanks for the education!
I would like to interject here at 40:18🤕,an incident happened here in Louisville KY where a motorcyclist pulled up next to a woman at a stop , I don't remember all the details, she deliberately cut him off rudely, so as he went to ask her what her problem was , she pulled out a gun and shot him , plenty witnesses recall everything was her fault. But your comment about not knowing what someone has in their car is absolutely correct.. 3 more instance's were fatalities. One at night , someone ran a red light, I think the rider pulled out assuming car was going to stop and it didn't. Another where a motorcyclist was stopped at a red light and was rear ended and slammed thru the intersection, and another was riding a full dressed bike and lost control as was navigating a turn off the freeway and slid under a tractor trailer. Could any of these been avoided, maybe one or two of the instance's , but these were the couple that come to mind. Each with different ways of departing this world. Sorry to ramble on my comment but good points in all your examples here. I'd also like to thank you for your service in the fire department sir, I'm sure you have seen your share of motorcycle tragedy during your service, crazy fires im sure, quick story and I'll shut up. I can remember reading an instance where a gentleman had two bikes in a shed , and quite a few chemicals in there also, apparently there was no air circulation in the shed and the fumes mixed caused a reaction and burned the the shed and the bikes up. Have you ever heard of something similar. Thanks again for letting me ramble abit.
Thanks for the video! Just about to take the MSF course and get my first bike, and this kind of video really helps me get in the mindset of a motorcyclist before I even get on a bike. Helps me know how I will need to act once I get on the bike!
I learnt to ride in Taiwan while I was there. The driving is crazy, but there is no anger. That is why it worked and I am still alive. The mix of Adrenalin and anger can be lethal, not to mention stupidity!
I just found your channel about a week ago love it! I started riding again after 20 years and my my things are different on the roads. Everyone be safe out there, thumbs up dan!
Wow, from the start of the video I was completely new to what hazards could come from where and by the end i had an awareness of 'what's coming around the bus, are there pedestrians, who's behind them?" So thank you for analysing these clips
26:37 Here in Phoenix, Arizona, where every traffic light has pedestrian lights, I don't just think about how long the light's been green, I actually watch the pedestrian crossing light. If it says don't cross (red hand), I know the green light is about to change. Actually in Phoenix a lot of those pedestrian lights have a green "walk" timer, counting down to "don't". 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 .. if I'm not really close to the intersection by this point and I know I won't have time for a yellow rush I'll go ahead and start slowing for a stop, even though the light is green.
I've had a couple in Tucson and one in Spokane that fake me out and say 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, WALK and I slowed down for nothing. But I do the same thing, especially in rain or snow. Or if someone's tailgating.
Same thing here in Texas and I do the same. If you know what to look for then you can accurately know when a light is going to change or who its likely to be green for next
DanDan, your channel is so refreshing. I feel like so many other channels encourage some of the riding you see in these clips because people want to be featured on "Jerks vs Asses [EP#394] 2020". There were a a lot of great tips and reminders in this video, for beginners and experienced riders. Definitely subscribing for more videos like this.
Yes, Dan. I’ve learned so much from these videos. I PLAN all the time now when I ride and I know it’s going to become a reflex. I have a few bad habits that I’ve identified through your videos, and that’s what I look for. “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication“ and you’ve made safe riding simple. Thank you!
Hey, I grew up riding dirtbikes and just started on the street. I was just talking to a friend about how I wish I could spend a few hours talking with an experienced driver about what to do and what to watch out for when riding on the street as I am used to closed dirt situations. Thank you very much for spending time to do this. to:dr Thank you so much to help me in an area I lack experience.
But wasn't there also a stop sign where the fire truck was coming? I don't know the USA traffic code, but at least where I'm from, in these situations you must give way for the one coming from the right. There was nobody coming from the right of the fire truck, so it was his turn to go. Doesn't really change the outcome or person in the wrong in any way, though.
Great work. I'm a new rider in Australia. Still so helpful watching all your videos. I focus on the space cushion constantly now. You explain it so well. I think watching these helps give a better understanding of our roles as motorcyclists and how we can be more receptive to what's going on around us. Keep up the great work buddy
Incredible video all true and realistic on the roads. I took a professional defensive training course and transport drivers license. We are always taught "always watch the front wheels" of the vehicles they will tell what that vehicle is going to do next.
Around the 12:30 point you say that the tires on the bike break free and earlier you said that the car you believe was just racing up to that point to stop. I don’t think that car was planning on stopping, in pretty sure the tires screeching was the car trying to stop once he realized his mistake
I just got my first bike today Softail standard. I rode a crazy No brand chopped out cycle over a decade ago. Like the saying goes it’s like riding a bike it all came back to me. I must say though, I really appreciate these videos I watch them every night at work even if I’m just listening and I believe it has contributed to keeping me in a safety first mindset. Thank you Dan and keep the tips and content coming brotha.
13:38 this sign actually means give way. It is used in narrow spaces like this tunel or narrow roads or roads under construction and indicates who should go through first. This sign says wait for cars in oposite direction to pass and than you can go.
Thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos. I'm working on getting my motorcycle endorsement and have been trying to find good videos that will help me learn, and better understand how to handle a bike in potentially hazardous situations. I'm really excited to browse your other videos, and see what else I can learn. I will be trying to attend the classes as money becomes available, but for now this is a huge help. Thanks again, and keep up the great work!
Nice. This is my first time at your channel. Good work. I've been ridding mostly (90%) in the city for the past 9 years. When I started to ride I watched a lot of bike/ car accidents & went over many of the "incidents" just the way you did. But it's nice to get a "play by play" from you. keep up the good work. Question: how do you prepare for the unexpected? Answer: by being attentive/ on alert.
I have learned so much by watching your videos. Thank you. I am taking a motorcycle safety course this weekend at my local harley-davidson showroom. I am so stoked.
Love these videos, I share them with people I know, whether they ride or not. It is a great way to help teach people how easy it is to miss a car let alone a bike. Keep up the good work, and ride safe out there.
I really appreciate these videos. This gives me a different point of view on these situations. I’m more of a rage immediately when drivers do something stupid person. These help me look at these situations a little more calmly.
I honestly used to have this mentality of "I'm on a bike, if someone cuts me off, I'm able to cut them off way easier" thankfully I've matured and got rid of that and now I value a safe ride over ego.
This was refreshing after watching a channel titled bikers vs crazy angry people! I think the riders are in competition to show who could be the stupidest! and THEY are the ones angry!
This is the first video I've seen. I like your message, like what you're doing. I think, much shorter more concise explanations would be great. Also, you have lots of content, maybe do more videos, shorter length, and each focused on 1 type of issue per episode.
Hey Dan thanks for these types of videos. Rescently had 96 Gsxr 750 gearbox lock up on me in middle of turn threw me catty wompus an endup rippin the gearshift off an what i think is what caused my hairline fracture did lay over thought i could make it home on my poor gear box just wanted to make sure people knew how to look for the warning signs of a badly wprn gear box i bought mine for 1200 gear box seemed fine first few months then after that lost 6th gear completly still had 5th then my bike got stuck in 3rd then started hearing clangin noices near gearbox went to buddies showed him the issue started to clear up an pretty much went to a non exictant state then left my buddies on the way home thats when she locked up entered a sharper turn went to gear down soon as i hit the down shift instant lock up of rear tire do to transmission failure from what i remember it felt like the bike was kinda of trying at that point to throw me back an forth therefore me laying it down shoulve have prolly leaned up in the midst of it all but just a HUGE REMINDER TO EVERYONE WATCHING TO TAKE THESE THINGS VERY SERIOUSLY AT THE TIME THEY HAPPEN. Looking back on it all once i noticed the malfuntioning of 6th gear i should have turned back around to go home bound or gotten ahold of a buddy with a trailor take these lil warning signs seriously guys espically on a 96 or a used bike i was very lucky.
Distance is the safest way of riding. Good proper safe stopping distance or more the more the better and safer. Put as much distance as you can between yourself and any vehicle in front and possibly behind you also. Its no good being blind behind a bus or other vehicle as you cannot see anything that is going on ahead of you in your road, something that might possibly turn into a danger and just as importantly other road users cannot see you. If you cannot be seen they are unaware of your presence and therefore are more than likely to hit you . When it comes to always having a get out or safe route away from danger the the best one that you can have is greater distance. Just think that if you are looking at or for an escape route one side or the other should a vehicle in front be in a collision, then should that happen can you actually go left or right but if the car or cars fill that place on both sides or you would have to hit the kerb or swerve into oncoming traffic then its not much a of an emergency route is it. The only safe one is to be far enough behind the vehicle in front so that you can always be in a position to stop.
These high-speeders don't have any right to criticize when the speed they go contributes to so much danger on the road, good breakdown of what they are doing wrong Dan
Perfect timing for me to see this come up on my feedn in this case thank you to the Algorithim. I am about to start riding again after a 25 year break. ( I am also taking a rider saftey course through the local DMV) Previously ( 25 years ago) I had plenty of seat time and experience. Now I need to re-learn EVERYTHING and these situational things are exactly the timely and poiniant things I need to see. It helps me start to become cognisant of these hazards again. Things I used to look for and prepare for every time but have now not had that daily reminder. Like and subbed Thanks DanDan
Riding a motorcycle is just something that u always have something to learn to stay alive , I appreciate what u do man , helps out to be aware of what i should and shouldnt do out there 👌🏽
30:30 ~ yeah, he was reckless and an idiot. Blaming a driver for changing lanes. She could have been safer about to but he KNEW she was coming and pushed forward to INSIST on his right of way. That just gets you dead. More than the car changing lanes, there was no line, worn away or whatever, she could have been confused about her line. But watching her merge, it’s clear she was planning on moving over all the way.
9:37 The Van you keep saying Luckily moved out of the way. He's Driving on the wrong side, maybe passing the other car that's behind him, but still on the wrong side driving casually. The Civic from the right is just an idiot. He should have also treated that as an intersection. Probably trying to beat the van so he can turn Left toward the Bike that he didn't see. If he was accelerating hard on purpose, knowing he will stop no matter what, I don't think he would have locked up his brakes. I'm pretty sure the squealing came from the car braking, not the bike accelerating hard. He was Surprised as hell. I can't really blame the biker at all here. Maybe he could have slowed down more seeing that Van on the wrong side and in his path. Otherwise I think he has the right of way as far as the Civic.
The two speed demons are in Chicago on the I290. Very busy expressway! I ride it all the time. Tons of hazards. Chicago Police rarely pull over speeding motorcycles. Been riding 41 years in Chicago. Seen just about everything but can always learn something new from you Dan! Just took the advanced riders coarse again for the 5th time in my life. Good to refresh my skills. Thanks for making me a better rider😎

Love this newer format. The live streams are fun, but there are often too many interruptions and distractions. Keep up the great work!!
Don't worry their still around
I've been riding almost five years now, but this was still an awesome and informative video. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to start riding. A lot of problems can be avoided just by riding more carefully in more populated areas/roadways, if you don't have any self control you probably shouldn't be riding.
Most of these incidents are just events where the rider needs to be considerate of others. If that was practiced, most if not all could have been evaded.
When on a a motorcycle always expect, and I mean always expect the unexpected.Never take anything for granted.
i just passed my MSF today, including all that i learned there and all the things you pointed out here, i feel like its been a very educational weekend lol
@@marshalls951 Yeah, that was definitely brakes, tires locked then ABS kicked in.
old comment but where im at you have to yield to traffic on your right inside parking lots which tbh is kinda nice.
Impatient or not, that car came from the right. So yield and crisis averted.
I’m 18 about to get my first bike. This information I know will truly help save my life one day. Thank you!
That and the tire squeal is actually the abs on the Honda not tire squeal from the bike.
Yep, I reckon that too.. he was fixated on the van , didn’t even see the bike..
Less than 4 minutes in and this man's earned a like.
First i never thought i will watch this entire video but i never skip at all and i watched completely. Thank you, i really learned a lot!
I like this newer format. Concise information in a more time efficient manner.
I am in my 2nd yr of being a motorcycle rider and really appreciate your video i am always looking to educate myself.
Riding in louisville is nuts, I avoid it if I can.
I wish everyone who took ANY vehicle onto the road (including bicycles) would watch this video and listen. Great vid. Thank you!
This is one of the best motorcycle safety videos I’ve ever seen. Great job.
You're saving people's lives man we love you. All out of good at that. Thank you so much
Thanks for the video! Just about to take the MSF course and get my first bike, and this kind of video really helps me get in the mindset of a motorcyclist before I even get on a bike. Helps me know how I will need to act once I get on the bike!
As a 25 year rider I "Love" this video.. Great information and this is shitz i see from riders all the time that tick me off..
Thanks Dan. First time I've seen your videos. . You're spot on. I've been riding for over 40 years and will never stop learning!!
I hope CZcams fixes their monetization classifications. This is a great benefit to society.
22:45 I like that you talked about the traction change and needing to pull the clutch when switching from road to mud, or the tire could spin, etc.
Thank you!
everything is spot on, great work assembling the video. No fuss, no ehhhs. Pure gold
What a terrific video analysis! As motorcyclists, we need to remain calm and practice what my dad called defensive driving. Thank you Dan.
Great points about horns and fingers
I swear 90% of all motorists (bikes or cars) do NOT drive safely, conscientiously or courteously. Makes me so upset!
Same, it can even be normal good people, but once they hit the road they just do the careless routine expecting nothing will go wrong.
_Normal good people_ are what make up most of the road users
@@tappajaav If that were true the roadside wouldn't be covered in plastic cups and cigarettes.
_Normal bad people_ then
Its called enjoying life
Just want to comment that I think it is awesome that you do these videos. I believe that you are saving lives. Good on you.
"if im sitting here like drax the destroyer you can't see me" ahahahahhaha
best motorcycle safety youtube channel. period.
15:52 is only a 2 way stop. There is a stop sign on both sides of the road on the left. Fire truck did not have a stop his way.
@@t_kups8309 there was not. Since this is a dangerous intersection there is stop signs on both sides of the street on the left
@@fullraph was looking for this comment. Yeah just stops on left and right firetruck and motorcycle had no stop signs.
@@t_kups830917:51 on the left above the side mirror 😅are y'all blind and riding
Your videos are very much needed! There are so many bad drivers on the road, and those on the bikes will just get themselves killed or badly injured!
My like is for the "drax the destroyer " comment :) . Love this segment btw!
I expect cars to pull out on me. In fact I’m surprised when they don’t. It’s got to the point now I don’t even react.
Hi
Me too, so I alway acknowledge them with a head nod thank you, as I go by.
Thank you for making it and educating! I just started my way with motorcycles, super happy to find this channel!!
I would nod ,thumb or maby salute that car,he stopped,I get loads of this all day, don't stress drivers out ,luv this channel,🍀
"Because you wanted to do a vroom vroom"
Best comment ever!!
God bless you for doing this Dan, there are so many bad drivers and riders on the road!
13:38 this sign actually means give way. It is used in narrow spaces like this tunel or narrow roads or roads under construction and indicates who should go through first. This sign says wait for cars in oposite direction to pass and than you can go.
Boris Brzac good to know if I ever take a ride in...? I would guess the Netherlands? Looks like Dutch or Amsterdam scenery.
Yep. One of the arrows is red, meaning vehicles going in that direction must yield to those coming the other way.
Its a painted traffic island with unbroken lines (8:47) - it is unlawful to ride on or cross even if the traffic is stationary.
But do we know which jurisdiction the video takes place in?🤔
Well thought out critiques, well spoken, and good delivery. Thanks for the tips
I agree very realistic. And honest
I have learned so much by watching your videos. Thank you. I am taking a motorcycle safety course this weekend at my local harley-davidson showroom. I am so stoked.
‘Watch for intersections 3’ was a 2 way stop sign. I didn’t see one for oncoming traffic so fire truck was honking for a good reason...
You didn't see the octagonal??
Love these videos, I share them with people I know, whether they ride or not. It is a great way to help teach people how easy it is to miss a car let alone a bike. Keep up the good work, and ride safe out there.
That independence blvd exit is in charlotte nc ...where we just happen to have the highest rating for bad traffic in the country
This channel has changed my riding style and I'm pretty sure saved my life a few times by now. Thanks!
Love the new posts. They are in Chicago riding interstate 290. (Independence Blvd)
I really appreciate these videos. This gives me a different point of view on these situations. I’m more of a rage immediately when drivers do something stupid person. These help me look at these situations a little more calmly.
We got masterchief here lmao I never expected Dan to know 117
I honestly used to have this mentality of "I'm on a bike, if someone cuts me off, I'm able to cut them off way easier" thankfully I've matured and got rid of that and now I value a safe ride over ego.
This was refreshing after watching a channel titled bikers vs crazy angry people! I think the riders are in competition to show who could be the stupidest! and THEY are the ones angry!
This was educational indeed. Thank You!
This is motorcycle special Ed lol but I watched the whole thing
Better off taking the class now than relearning how to walk
Very educational and useful tips, happy to see simply slowing down helps avoid a lot of these.
India Traffic hurts my head.
59:24 a lot of people like to create drama so they can post a video online and feel good about themselves.
I just got my endorsement this weekend and I'm loving these videos. Thank you for the tips!!!
Almost looked like the guy in the rain was going the wrong way on a one way road.
From the script on the bus at 19:16 it looks like Thailand, a left hand drive country.
Nope. Definitely a 2-way road. Just Thai things...
Hey Dan I love your videos they are the best I am a new rider over 55 and they are very educational for safety thx.
37:40 cruiser rider only has one mirror.
Riding a motorcycle is just something that u always have something to learn to stay alive , I appreciate what u do man , helps out to be aware of what i should and shouldnt do out there 👌🏽
18:08 - it's a two way stop
Yep, I saw that too. Just two stop signs facing that one direction. Tells me there is a lot of issues getting people to stop there.
Exactly
As a new rider this is ultra helpful, thanks.
I'm a rider from Iran and I wanna thank You for all of your time and energy very well made video with great advice and Wisdom in it.
thank you
9:37 The Van you keep saying Luckily moved out of the way.
Why does Zach Galifianakis keep calling himself "Dan"?
This is the first of your videos I've watched...
You have great instinct and mental riding skills.. thanks.for sharing..
