Probiotics Benefits + Myths | Improve Gut Health | Doctor Mike

- This week's episode is all about probiotics benefits and myths. The discovery of the microbiome has started off a huge cascade of new research as well as the launch of some questionable health products. I think that the idea that we are covered inside and out by bacteria, with the majority of it being helpful, is pretty mind-blowing.
I decided to make this video because I've seen your comments and questions on the subject, usually in the in the form of "how can I improve my gut?" Also, I've noticed that my patients have begun taking these supplements to cure everything from a weight gain, to a weakened immune system to acne.
As you probably already know I am a healthy skeptic and believe that just because we see some correlations between disease and good bacteria it is not as simple as putting those bacteria into a capsule. I firmly believe in the next 20-30 years we will unlock some fascinating secrets about our gut that will redefine how we think about our health.
If there’s something that you’re curious about and would like me to explore in a video, please let me know because I take your requests seriously. We’ve got some really great videos coming up in the next
few weeks so be sure to subscribe to stay up to date! Love you all!

You were asked to be with them not to kill them 🤣🤣
Me too dude... me too.

This is what my PHD is on. The relation of gut and mind and how it can cure depression.
Love that! The gut brain connection is such a fascinating topic. A lot of the women I work with and speak to have been able to heal from things like anxiety simply by shifting to a plant-based diet :)
Oh my gosh! Please get in touch with me...my son has autism(was a "normal" child until 7.5...is 10 now) I keep asking his pediatrician how seemingly developed autism over night and I get the equivalent of a shoulder shrug everytime! I have looked into gut health and autism and not confident in the sources. Can you point me in the right direction?

Hello 👋 dear
I want to lose a bit of weight plus I suffer from depression and bloated and insomnia ect 😢 can you please tell me how you have got on. 🙏
@@juliemilton9029 It takes a while for your body to get used to probiotic intake. Try Kefir, home fermented pickles, Apple cider vinegar. Those things can provide you with probiotics without needing to take a supplement. But it will take time to get used to them, at first they will make you bloated. Depression and insomnia are not things I experienced. Maybe try meditation to help with your depression and insomnia. Good luck. I can try to help if you have any questions, but I am not a doctor so, maybe seeing a doctor would be of use to you also :)
@@juliemilton9029 hmm, I would definitely talk to your doctor, but just keep in mind the probiotics won't help with losing weight necessarily. I personally started taking it because I was having digestive problems, and it did help a lot with that. Like he said in the video though, it may not work for everyone, it really depends what your issues are. I think I was just lucky a random brand helped for me haha.
Best advice I can give you is to look at "losing weight" more as getting healthier, getting stronger, doing better for you. It's a better mindset for both your mind and body. Plus, weight doesn't always mean anything. At my heaviest weight, I've been both really out of shape, and later the best shape of my life.
@@juliemilton9029 also, insomnia, still working on that haha... I dunno if it's legal where you are, but have you tried weed? 😅
I had a lot of gut issues and changing my eating habits and adding Kefir /probiotics to my diet has helped me soooo much. Feeling my best at 33 🥰
Amen, that's awesome. Your testimony encourages me.
I love kefir so much 🥰
How long does it take to feel better?
I started noticing changes on the 2 weeks really. I used kefir grains and fed them and used the yogurt milk on my milkshakes in the mornings. Still doing great.
All things i heard about milk kefir are good.. what about the bad side? Is there somebody out there who has the same experience as me? I really wanna continue drinking milk kefir but why is its getting worse, I don’t have uti but now i feel i do have now plus all the pain in stomach, intestines area and even my chest start to hurt last night that i drink margarita to kill all the good bacteria and now i feel better. . I was so scared last night that if it would continue i would end up in the ER.

I started down the Probiotic/prebiotic journey recently along with a change in diet and have some recommendations for others thinking of doing the same.
Food that have probiotic - Kimchi, Sauerkraut (fermented, make sure it mentions that it has live cultures, making it is also pretty easy), kefir, apple cider vinegar, kombucha, fermented foods (such as fermented pickles, but be careful, most pickles are made with vinegar instead of via fermentation).
Prebiotic foods:
Asparagus, Onions, garlic, artichokes, leeks, kiwi, Root veggies such as sweet potatoes, squash wild yams, parsnips.
My nutritionist recommended having 2-3 servings a day of prebiotic and probiotic food and to try getting both (pre and probiotics) from foods and not supplements.
If you plan your day/diet out right, you can get a good prebiotic intake going with minimal effort. Try the foods listed above, keep the ones that you like on your diet. Also research! You can find more foods that are in pre/pro biotic food list.
At first you may get cramps, constipated, etc. But once your body gets used to probiotic intake, you will feel better than you did before (probably, unless there is something about you specifically which does not want the foods you are adding to your diet, see a doctor?).
One last thing, change your diet! Look up why you should be eating organic food vs non organic. Research the amount of pesticide used in non organic veggies and what you are putting into your body when you eat things sprayed with pesticides freely. Drink more water (16 cups a day!). and look into intermittent fasting. If you can add all of these things to your routine, I think you will see great improvement as did I. I lost 10 pounds in the last month and feel much better (not that I was feeling bad to begin with). Good luck! Comment if you have any questions.
I am not a doctor and this is not medical advice, just sharing my experience and advice I would give a friend trying to start a probiotic regiment.
Thank you for the advice and sharing your experience.
Are you still managing to maintain this? I started about a week ago, and have constipation but not overly bad. But im going to carry on after reading this. I started all the about including exercise and IF and have only lost 3lbs in a week. But I'm hopeful as my body gets used to the changes and the micro bio gets healthier it will come off a little easier
Sustainability of a diet is important over following an Optimal diet. You lost weight with intermittent fasting because you created a CALORIC DEFICIT. Someone on keto will lose weight because they've RESTRICTED a complete food group, again creating a CALORIC DEFICIT.
On the other hand, prebiotic/probiotics which you've mentioned are on point and should be included in one's diet.
Does yogurt count as a probiotic?

Now i go at least 2 times a day, everyday. So, there is definitely no person in the world who can tell me that this is a useless supplement.
I always found it pretty wild how bacteria basically control us. Seriously thats really not an understatement. We have more bacteria than cells. Currently having kimchi fermenting in my kitchen. It is pretty entertaining. It has already peed burped and farted within 48 hours.

He is just a normal doctor, who looks increadibly good. And that is why people are watching the videos, there are many doctors with good contents that have no success on youtube. So, he is using his strongest "plus point" to sell his products and it is o.k.
sciencefictionnow: He is not selling anything. He is advising, and telling things. Nothing else. It´s totally voluntarily to see his videoes and listen to him.
He shows only products because the producer of that products pays, advertisment is a part of the selling process. And there is nothing wrong with that.
Just curious, is Dr. Mike an actual doctor?
I eat Kimchi, Natto, Miso and Sourdough, and I often drink Kombucha and sometimes Kefir. So I'm very glad that its not just a myth! I hope more research goes into it!
It’s really nice to know that there are doctors like you out there.
As a fellow healthcare provider thank you for mentioning over use of antibiotics!

Can you make a similar video about the benefits and myths of multi-vitamins?
Yes!!!
He has
You should not take them unless you are deficient, and your doctor told you to take them. If that were the case it’ll most likely be a specific vitamin deficiency, and you would need to take just that one vitamin, not a multi-vitamin. The exact cause of the deficiency needs to be found, so you can treat the actual source of the problem. One example is Celiac’s disease, which damages the intestine, and interferes with absorption of nutrients. One common deficiency is B-12. Instead of just taking the B-12, you would need to stop eating gluten, so the body can heal and start absorbing the vitamin properly. The ideal way to get all your nutrients it’s through food. Taking multivitamins could actually be toxic, since you may be taking way more than the amount you need. This can cause hair loss, dizziness, fast hear beat, and more. You need the right amount of vitamins and minerals, not too much, not too little. Going to either of the extremes will cause symptoms and problems. I was just reading about this today, and been learning from my nutrition class this week. Another problem with vitamins is that they are not regulated, and manufacturers can put anything in there. The best way to get your vitamins is through a varied diet, high in fruits, veggies, fiber, etc.
MiFOE try nyo po Pro15 Probiotics....its what we need..a good bacteria.🙂

If you are traveling to any developing country I highly recommend bringing a probiotic you can be confident with you and taking it from the beginning of your trip. My friends and I who did got significantly less sick than those who didn’t. Do check to make sure that it doesn’t need any kind of special storage though.
Several years ago, I was having horrible stomach pain, to the point that I couldn't eat without doubling over in extreme pain for weeks. I went to the doctor and they did some tests and everything looked fine, and they said there was nothing they could do. I was about to try eliminating foods, but before I started I realized that a couple weeks before the pain started, I had finished a round of antibiotics. I got some probiotics and started taking them. Within 36 hours I was feeling back to normal. From then on, every time a member of my family has taken antibiotics, we have followed it up with a round of probiotics because I never want to go through that again.
Amen!! Which probiotics did you take.
My son has stomach issues with antibiotics, the last time he has to take them I just had him eat yogurt every day and it helped.
My friend got C Diff from antibiotics. He's on some again and taking probiotics this time and so far so good
Every time I get prescribed antibiotics, the pharmacist recommends I take probiotics after 2 hours until I finish my course.
I honestly didn’t know what probiotics were and assumed they were food for the food bacteria. Until one pharmacist told me to make sure I don’t take probiotics with antibiotics otherwise they would get killed. Then I knew I was talking live bacteria.
That is good but how do you know that you need probiotics? what strains? and how can you have a long lasting results?
I personally had IBS and other symptoms and here is exactly what I did:
1- fixed my diet, so that i know what healthy foods are. believe it or not, it is a big part of the solution. not sure what diet you follow but the less the processed food, the better your health will be.
2- you will hear a lot about taking supplements but after trying dozens, it is best when it is personalized to your needs. so you need to test and see what your body needs.
I suggest you work with a Dietitian or find a legit course that teaches healthy living to go about this.

Dr. Mike can you please talk to us about post weight-loss stretched or excess skin? Is there a way to make it go away?
TheJawi the easiest way would be to relieve excess skin surgery because extra skin isn’t something like fat that you exercise away but I’m sure that if you google it and look on web md of a website with valuable credentials of an actual doctor then you’ll find something
Loose skin after dramatic weightloss is caused by too rapid weight loss. You can't avoid it but you can reduce it quite dramatically by losing weight slowly and letting your skin adapt to it and of course some people have better skin then others and will have reduced amounts. Of course nobody want to use years to lose their weight so the only option you have then is operation.
Plastic surgery
If it’s just slightly loose, hanging out after recent weight loss, your best bet is to keep exercising and drink tons of water. It took some time to stretch that skin out, right? It takes a similar amount of time for the skin to rebound. If the amount of loose skin is significant and painful, see a plastic surgeon- they usually have both non-surgical and surgical options. Congratulations on your weight loss(if you wanted to lose it!).
Weight based exercises will help if the excess skin is not major, if it is major I think the only option is plastic surgery but I’d try weights first
8:00 The bloopers at the end are always my favourite lol
interesting concept. The mind manifests stress through body symptoms (gut issues, breathing issues, chest tightness, fainting) . This is what psychologists call a somatic response to a stressor. In terms of gut issues, I wonder if controlling what we eat and drink helps as a coping mechanism to regulate our stress levels. I am skeptical that the gut itself can cure anxiety and depression. However, awareness of body-mind connection and mindfulness of the foods we eat seems to be effective in helping stress induced gut issues. Like the 4th article provided in the description explains, the gut-brain axis relationship is bi-directional! Great video, it really sparked my interest.
True!I become anxious 5 months ago and can't still go away since I have a severe stomach cramp due to hpylori bacteria. And I have lost 10 kgs also my mood has been changed from that time.

Hi Dr Mike,
When I was about 8 or 9 years old, I used to always get these random episodes of intense nausea/pain that would last for about an hour and then just disappear on their own. I also had some recurring eczema on my arms that wouldn’t go away. The nausea was causing me to miss school and for over a year, I went to heaps of doctors who couldn’t explain what was causing this, and who only seemed to focus on treating the symptoms with medications, etc.
Finally, I found a really good GP who had extensive knowledge of the gut. He put me on a diet of no refined sugars, wheat, dairy or excess carbs to clear out candida, yeasts and bad bacteria in general. Within a week, all my eczema was gone and the episodes of feeling sick never came back. I wish more doctors understood the huge role our gut obviously plays in our overall health, like you and my doctor do :)

Christopher Dyson mmhmm. Especially the IBS-C. All the years I went trying fiber etc, avoiding coffee. Turns out coffee with a little soy creamer fixed the problem 🙄
YESS!! I'm IBS-D and I've tried about every diet and food elimination out there and it's still a major problem for me. It literally controls my life...
I have IBS but I never realised there were sub-types...
Any chance there is a connection between apendix removal and IBS?
Hi! I left this comment earlier but avoid FODMAP's and try VSL3. Here is the comment I made earlier:
as a microbiologist who focuses on the microbiome, just a note that beans/legumes are horrible for the microbiome. They have defense proteins as a function of the plant that makes their protein indigestible, and the mucinolytic and proteolytic bacteria binge eat them, and as a side effect of breaking down all that protein, destroy the gut lining as well- causing an array of problems. SECOND, kombucha is a horrible joke, it has yeast, which people with crohns disease are known to have antibodies to yeast as a biomarker. THIRD, store-bought yogurt does more harm than help because of all the emulsifiers they put in it that emulsify your gut lining as well. Homemade yogurt that is fermented enough so there's no dairy is great and delicious :) FOURTH I totally agree with Dr. Mike that if you are healthy, there is no need to take probiotics, just make healthy eating habits. BUT if you do have problems with indigestion, bloating, or any of the diseases Dr. Mike listed, VSL3, which you can buy at bartells, is one of the few probiotics that has research that shows it has a positive impact. Also avoid foods high in FODMAP's, google that term if you want to know which foods that is.
Thanks Dr. Mike for your informative channel :)
You’re kind of like the new Bill Nye for health and wellness! Theme song? “dr.mike the cute health guy! Mike! Mike! Mike! Mike!”
He IS hot! However, I am 100% gay. Doesn't mean I can't say nice things about cute male doctors ;)
😂 the clap back
@@AC-PNW nice I'm only 35% gay but I'll get there eventually
Oh please. Much as I loved bull nye and watched regularly with my kids... Bill nye read a script and is an actor. Too bad he didn't get some education to go along with his image. Love em all. We need quality information sources! Love Dr. Mike!
Bill nyes a weirdo. His time has passed.
YES! This is an awesome video! 👏🏻 I can’t believe it took me a year to find. I’m an RDN, CPT, Plant-Based and Wellness Advocate and this is SO cool and great information to share with the public. It’s crazy, but not surprising, that our gut health and nutrition can impact our mood and mental health. I can’t find the links to the reading you recommended. I would love to see the research on that link between gut health and mental health. Where can I find those links. Thanks so much!
Love your Chan, thanks for the context
I’m in my late 20s, and for the life of me I really cannot stay focused on any science lecture. Your videos however keep me entertained, focused, and your explanation really helps me understand what you’re talking about. Not like other people who are throwing a bunch of medical terms that mean nothing to me. Thanks doctor mike!!
Hey Dr.Mike! Can you do a video on EMT, EMS, and Paramedics? Thanks!
My dad's a paramedic, and comes home with the best stories. It never ceases to amaze me all dirty work they do to help everyone out. Thanks to all those in that field! You are truly making a difference!
Finally an informative video and not trying to sell anything
As I was scrolling ... I couldn't hear your voice.. but I saw your face and I instantly subscribed simply because I can tell.. you're a great communicator 💁♀️
Love this video. As someone with a poor immune system and multiple digestive health disorders, I found this to be very exciting and informative. As a future health educator, I’m hoping to use these ideas and research to teach my future students more about their own health.
Dr Mike I want to become a surgeon and you have been the most influential person to me. Thanks for making such videos and being an inspiration to me and many more students.🙂
FROSTBITE seriously though!!! I just recently found doctor mike and i am LOVING his videos

Great video and very informative, thankyou! 🙂
Very interesting. Thank you
I think an update on probiotics based on any new findings would be great!
True, I personally felt like probiotics helped me keep Candida in check, so I am sure they work.
I randomly found your channel a few days ago, the one video you made about vaccines, because I'm really interested in the fact that so many people (including a member of my own family) are against them, it's unbelievable! I'm addicted to your videos now, so yeah, you got yourself a new subscriber who just loves the heck outta you ❤
Thank you soo much for sharing this information...💞
Superb Information and knowledge shared. THanks
This comes out at a time when it's rainy season here in India and I feel can feel these microbes crawling under my skin.
I am so grateful for your channel. This is the kind of information that i know my doctor doesnt have time to explain on our visits and it is so great to have another reliable source. Thank you!
I agree I really look forward to watching his videos it's so nice to have a doctor that is honest and open about healthcare. Really informative as well as entertaining!!
Exactly everything we have to check properly before making worse
Thank you for the informations you are a legend, I dont usually comment on videos but this video is really helpful
I've always have a hard time going to toilets since I was a child. Never got diagnosed because my parents thought it's just a normal thing even tho they go to toilet everyday.
It gotten worse as I grow older. Every time I go on a holiday, I can never visit the toilet. My mom even gave me pills that make me go to the toilet because my stomach was bloating. I've recently discovered probiotics and i instantly could go to the toilet. It's great! My stomach doesn't bloat every time I eat( esp cuz I love rice and noodles a lot). I don't eat them everyday tho, maybe like 3 times a week just to keep my gut going.
Also!!! Foods that make me go to toilet are kimchi and zucchini!! I noticed after eating them I could go hehe
I'm always stressed and I have a terrible diet, sorry bacteria. :'-(
I have regular insomnia, and I definitely ate way too much white rice, and I hate yoghurt, sorry bacteria :"( #confessionalcommentsbox
Lol
Well said. Thanks.
I’m pregnant and was told I have a weak cervix. I have had previous premature babies. And with this pregnancy had a suture put in my cervix. I have been eating yogurt for view months. I feel a lot better, no cramping or back pain. I feel great. I think I had gbs and the yogurt is helping.
Doctor Mike, thank you for this articulate and clarifying presentation of a highly important subject of the microbiome. In addition to your knowledge, you are a great teacher. I was happy to have met you for the first time. I have subscribed and am interested in all your posts.
