    In this video I build a 3D printed fully automatic cigarette stuffing machine. The machine is controlled by an Arduino. The motors are driven by an AF Motorshield V1. I had to do a lot of testing to build a functional machine. A lot of power is needed to press the tobacco. I achieve this through a knee lever construction. An IGUS steep thread spindle is used to drive the press. I have tried some tests with a M6 threaded rod. However, this does not work very well. A threaded rod has a lot of frictional losses and cannot provide the required force. The machine would work better with stronger motors. However, you are limited to 600mA by the motorshield. Here you could use external motor drivers.
    On Cults or Printables you can download the 3D models.

    Just a little help from a self making, cigarette smoker: Your tobacco is not packing & holding in the tubes more than likely from too small, granular, & dry tobacco. I see similar problems when making my own cigarettes if dry or granular. Its best if tobacco is longer strands & slightly moist. Put an apple slice in bag of tobacco for moisture. And use fresh tobacco with longer cut strands, it helps hold in tube. But once processed, tobacco tends to break down to finer grannuals that wont stay in tube, similar to sand. It must be stringy strands. Hope this help?? Nice job, your mostly there..

    • @FraensEngineering
      @FraensEngineering  Před rokem +1

      Hello, I know that with the dry tobacco from cigarette rolling. The tobacco in the video I have always let through the machine. This has dried him and chopped into small pieces. If I had always taken fresh tobacco would have been very expensive ;-) But you're right. The tobacco fresh from the can has worked best.

  • @zeanorax
    @zeanorax Před rokem

    How you find perfect dimensions for tobacco press knife? You used small dc motor for injector spoon but its easily extract tobacco out of press. Many machines uses 0.75 kw servo motors. I made a cigarette machine I am using 0.55 kw motor but its really hard to extract tobacco out of press. My press dimensions are too big or small I don't know.

    • @FraensEngineering
      @FraensEngineering  Před rokem

      The motors of my machine are too weak. That was one of my first findings. This led to the design with the levers for the press.
      I bought a Top-O-Matik tamping machine to measure the dimensions. Tobacco is a very difficult material. You need a lot of force to press it and push it into the sleeve.

    • @FraensEngineering
      @FraensEngineering  Před rokem

      The inductive sensors require 12V. At the black cable 5V are fed in via a voltage divider. These then switch through to GND. Therefore you need a small circuit to connect them.

Can you do 3D modeling? If yes, which program? More powerful motors would have to be installed. The motorshield will not work anymore. You would have to build external motor drivers. You could use an Arduino Mega and use the Motorshield for the servo. Of course you would have to adapt the program code. Can you program an Arduino? For the bearings you need a lathe. Do you have one? You would need to put some development work into it. Do you have the skills to do that? If not, building doesn't really make sense.

      @@FraensEngineering
      First, let me say that your design is an inspiration. Really great work.
      Additional Considerations:
      The humidity of the tobacco is critical to both the loading and the tendency for the tobacco to fall out.
      About 60%-65% relative humidity is the ideal range.
      Above 65% and the tobacco tends to become sticky, clumping together and creating unnecessary drag on the injector walls, loading tube and the paper. Reversible by reducing the humidity.
      Indications are: tube is pushed away early. Space close to the filter left unfilled. Tight spots in the m8ddle of the loaded paper.
      Below 60% the tobacco begins to 'dust' and break down into smaller particles that don't interlock and compress into the tube.
      This condition isn't reversible but can be mitigated by increasing the humidity. Once the tobacco breaks down though it will never return to a condition that will load or pack properly.
      The most ideal leaf cut is "thread cut."
      It has the surface area and compressability to provide both, uniform loading (same density throughout the tube) and good stability with the tobacco staying entangled with itself and not falling out.
      I use a heavily modified Powermatic II, made by Zico. It has a robust loading system, strong motor a very good compression/cutting blade and well engineered spoon loader geometry.
      What it lacks and what its subsequent design upgrade doesn't get right is the tube positioning system which you seem to have sorted out very nicely.
      I've added a large 3D printed hopper (holds tobacco for 5 packs) and a humidity control/display system that keeps the tobacco in the ideal range for spoon loading machines.
      Your tube alignment mechanism solves most of the remaining automation issues.
      There is also a lesser issue with getting even compression of the tobacco as it is compressed into the loading chamber, which I think can be addressed with a rotating silicone blade or brush.
      What remains unaddressed by either design appears to be a simple vibrator/shaker box and a trimmer to finish them neatly.
      Thank you for sharing your brilliant design solutions. I hope my input has helped you in your efforts in some small way.

      Hello, the machine is a prototype. I would only be interested in a feasibility study. There are still some things that need to be improved. An identical replica would not work well.

    The tobacco you used seems to be of a very fine cut, how will the loading/stuffing mechanism handle longer cut and more moist tobacco?
    Have you smoked the machine rolled cigarettes? Are they too tight? Do they burn evenly? Are they uniform in the packing(especially each end)?
    Right now i am hand rolling with a hand machine and I’ve got the technique down to where I can roll perfect cigarettes which burn better than any store brand, I’m worried the cigarettes this machine rolls won’t be enjoyable to smoke.
    Also about the files, just send them to me and I’ll post them :) hahaha.

    • @FraensEngineering
      @FraensEngineering  Před rokem

      Hi, the machine is a prototype to try if it is possible with 3d printed parts. The tobacco is very fine as I have used it over and over again. The machine is certainly not perfect. My biggest problem was the high forces needed to press it. That's why the solution with the threaded spindle came up. As good as store-bought cigarettes they do not burn. But with some optimization and stronger engines would certainly still improve a lot.

    • @AbsoluteRecoil
      @AbsoluteRecoil Před rokem

      @@FraensEngineering Is the compression really that big a problem? A good cigarette is never packed really hard. When rolling the cigarette in between your fingers it should be soft to the touch, enough to deform it a little. If you squeeze it between your fingers and it’s almost like a rock and you can’t deform the surface without considerable effort that is a cigarette that will make the smoker angry. The perfect consistency should be where you can squeeze the outer circumference a third of the radius of the cigarette before you meet considerable resistance. Ofcourse the ultimate test is actually smoking it as this will reveal all the characteristics more clearly, but I do not know of you smoke or not.
      I’ve been experimenting with a design that uses an Archimedes screw to pack each cigarette to a perfect consistency.

    • @FraensEngineering
      @FraensEngineering  Před rokem

      That you need such a large force, I was also a little surprised at first. I then studied a lot of videos and pictures on the Internet. There are systems with pneumatic cylinders and those with geared motors. A small Festo DSBC-32 pneumatic cylinder already has a force of 483N. However, it feels like the professional machines have something bigger. Machines with geared motors usually have a very large gearbox. I also think that these motors run with 24V. In my experiments, it turned out that I achieve these forces only by means of a "knee lever construction". Professional machines also often work this way. I then bought a Top-O-Matic to look at the system. This also works according to this principle. It is also very helpful if the "toggle lever" moves slightly above the dead center. This compresses the tobacco a little more and relaxes it again a little. A big problem was also that the tobacco between the filler opening and press jammed. So the transition from tobacco magazine in the press. If tobacco pieces jam here, it is very difficult to push the tobacco out of the press. It then clogs very quickly. Here it is important that you have enough force to push it into the sleeve. It is somewhat difficult to explain.
