- I was expecting more from this filter, even though I new it was an economy filter. The filter has standard economy filtration with upgrades of good metal ends. I am using it myself on my Jeep Patriot at this time, we shall see how well it worked very soon.
Bought from Rockauto on sale at $3.84 Canadian price.
Tech for technician, rapid lubes places like that. I pulled one off my father’s car from a valvoline quick lube. I was happy to see it. Nice economy filter. I wouldn’t go more than 5k miles. Can buy them in bulk, but for diy oil changes I’d go purolator one or boss. Worth the extra few bucks
They are well made for simple filter, I would also use Purolator One or Boss if I had the choice.
The rust on the base plate is ugly but the lack of rust on the other metal parts leads me to believe that it was there at the time of it being made or shortly after 🤔like there was no oil on that bit so any moisture would have rusted that pretty quickly 🤷🏻♂
Thanks Looney, yeah my guess is it sat base down in humid area. Probably sad base down at warehouse for awhile.
It’s their bulk/economy filter. 3-5k oci.
Thanks, seems to get the job done if it's used as a economy filter.
@@crazybillsgarage I use it on my daughters civic. I do 4500 oci on it & have had no issues. Plus it installs upside down so not having a silicone adbv isn’t a big deal. $2.40 on Amazon with free shipping is hard to top.
good to see this was wondering since they are super cheap at tractor supply and online stores recently, getting hard to find big filters like PH8a, ST01, FL1A, FCO1, PL3001, W51015, S8A, ST8 etc. All by design
Yes actually a lot of economy filters have numerous sizes. Still nice to see.
Good video Bill, nice to see your feeling better after your bad flu.
Thanks Stan
Most accidents/failures are a combination of little quality weaknesses. It is better not to bearly giterr done, or you might not giterrdone!
Yes the giterrdone attitude, it will be fine. Not always a good thing for everything. Thanks Loren.
This is concerning a bit ... If you look at my channel I have cut open a number of these tech filters and have not seen anything like this, I have never seen any using the leaf spring bypass valve, they have all been incorporated into the end cap. I am wondering if there are different manufacturers for these filters or hopefully not being bootlegged... Over all I have been very impressed with these filters!!
I'll have a look at your channel to check a few of these, interesting how there is differences. Thanks.
@@crazybillsgarage yes it's a little concerning lol
@uglyhandgarage2927 thanks, I have subscribed to your channel, you have some good vids there.
@@crazybillsgarage thank you buddy... I enjoy yours as well!!
It stands for Technician. A repair shop/oil change place filter similar to the Bosch Workshop and the NAPA line of ProFormer filters. Designed for shops to keep in stock as a less expensive alternative to the "stadard" filter available for public consumption. Perfectly fine for most "by the book" OCIs. The rust probably came from being stored in a wet environment. They're usually higher quality than the one you got.
Thanks for the information, I have bought a few of them and have had no trouble with them. Not a bad standard filter. Used as it should will work for its lifespan. Thanks.
From the brand website, currently there is not a PurolatorTech oil filter. There are only 4 other ones: PurolatorSport, Purolator, PurolatorONE and PurolatorBoss .. I wonder this a discontinued filter. Definitely a $3 air filter I would not trust too much ... Purolator has better filter ... I am going to give a try to its Boss.
I hear the Boss is really well made, the Purolator Tech is discontinued at Rockauto. Thanks Toni.
In my research, the Purolator Tech is a produce going to be sold wholesale to oil change shops like Grease Monkey and Jiffy Lube. It won't be available for the retail market.
My speculation, rust on interior from a poor (high humidity) storage environment. Filter made March of 2021, so it's had time to sit somewhere. Frist time I can recall seeing Purolator made filter with that type bypass design. Most always integral part of dome endcap. Tech are jobber filters intended for shop use. On Amazon they currently go for $2.40. Other name, economy, value, lowest tier basic filter. Worth $2.40. Pretty rusty though.
Thanks Faxmen, the filter looks like it will get the job done, we will see on the next oil change.
I agree... I have dissected several of these are my channel and have never come across a bypass valve that wasn't incorporated into the end caps... This filter doesn't look right!!
@@uglyhandgarage2927 Since I made the comment, I've seen at least a couple other Puro made filters using separate 2in1 bypass and stamped spring combo. I'm thinking Mann&Hummel (Puro owner) now using this bypass type, on at least some applications.
@@faxmen09 it is possible... I will have to keep my eye out for it!!
How do you read the date code?
Will you be ‘scrutinizing’ the one you remove from your jeep?
Not sure since I did the review here, but I will see how well it worked and held together.
Rust in a cheap filter? Great bargan! Hmm hengst got my attention!
Rusty filters, I prefer my rust on the outside.😁
yah this is a 5k filter, I bought 3 of them recently, they all had plastic wrap over the end
my cars use the equitant to fram 6607 or 7317. its a decent filter, better then fram
It is a decent filter, I have a couple also. Thanks.
I have taken at least six of these apart and this is the first time I have seen rust in one. something must have happened to this one.....
I am guessing the wearhouse it was stored in had high humidity or while being shipped it contacted some sort of liquid.
This must be model specific because the Purolator tech filter I use TL14612 is the complete opposite in terms of the drainback valve and filter media density.
Yes it probably is, I have seen different filters with different setups. Thanks for the comment.
I called Purolator and they said that the l, the pl, and the TL are all the same.
Thanks for the information Keith.😉
F is Fayetteville NC. , 03 is March, N is 2003 or 2021. It's old. Found a post on bobstheoilguy blog. What do you expect for $2.40?
Exactly, standard economy filter.
Don't buy anything lower than Purolator One.
Thanks Milford, yeah I see your point, I will try and get a Purolator one to check out.
If you are going to by a filter by Mann-hummel, the Purolator Boss is the only filter worthy. The rest are crap. A majority of the best filters are made by Champion Labs. The price of these filters of $12-15 bucks shouldn't even be on your mind. Use the best oils and filters. Engines are expensive, are more efficient with better oil, flow and filtration. People use crap oil like Kirkland and SuperTech to save $5 doillars and a cheap filter. Well, my engines are too expensive junk. So, after hundreds of hours of research, I know which are the best of both.
@Balticblue93 thank you Baltic, use the best if you can, but some people have no care for there engines, just as long as they start, they don't care.
@@crazybillsgarage I totally agree and unfortunately, they might find out the hard way. Good vehicle maintenance we know will make it last so much longer. Purolator Boss or one of the other major brands from Champion laboratories are pretty much the same.
Where did you get a Purolator from in Manitoba?
Ordered the Purolator off of online Rockauto site.
@@crazybillsgarage Great site! Shame they don't seem to have purolator for my car :/
@scottf2450 also check Parts Avatar online it ships from Canada
1st. time I see a corroded Purolator...Disappointing.
Yeah the corrosion was a disappointment, hopefully others are better.
You just keep regurgitating information already put out by Whip City Wrencher!
I don't watch Whip city Wrencher. Good channel I'm sure, I do my thing he does his. I do my videos and I'm sure he does his. I don't watch other channels so I won't know what others say about filters. Glad he has a good fan base.👍
I don't watch WCW either.
Wtf look at that rust oh boy
I have one more of these filters not sure if I want to use it. Sure they didn't leave factory that way.
