  • Steve and I talk about confirmation bias. It's a thinking error that we all make but just how powerful is it?

The fact that even a seasoned and self-aware skeptic as Dr. Novella still has to fight his own cognitive biases illustrates just how difficult clear critical thinking is. It's a never-ending battle. And what I find most difficult is examining my own personal cherished beliefs. Anyway, I appreciate the two Novella brothers presenting these videos. Thanks guys!

LOL, nice to see that your "accuracy filter" is functioning well. I need to replace mine because it's clogged with this month's unconscious propaganda.😉

"There are filters in place that you're not aware exists."
That's the thing we need to watch out for the most.

I have been clinically diagnosed with a severe combination of mental illnesses since I was a kid. My dad never understood why my interpretation of reality was so different from his until he learned about confirmation bias in a conference for his work earlier this year. Over two decades spent at odds with him, and he finally, finally understands that my mental health diagnoses are legitimate. I'm floored and grateful.

I really feel ppl who don't do themselves the service of dwelling in these concepts from time to time, are really shorting themselves.
It really assists with true appreciation, and makes opinions more meaningful. Learn yourself!

My girlfriend does this all the time. I tell her, "Hon, you're only counting the times that I leave the toliet seat up and dismissing when I leave the seat down."
Man! So, when it's down, she can't know that I was cognative about it, she'll only catch the 1 time up out of 10 down 😅😂

I love this talk. I had an encounter with a UFO in 1975 and have been searching through the stuff that is out there on this subject. For me knowing of their existence first hand I can tell the difference between story tellers and things that might be real. I try to doubt what I saw but can’t find anything that can explain it away. I try to gather all information but yes, am I skimming over lots of stuff that might pop my balloon. So far I think not.
    Thanks.

Ever since I came out of the rabbit hole I've tried to reach others down in that hole an dbring them out and to be honest, I doubt I've been successful with a single one! It is so tiresome trying to help folks that are sucked into wacky conspiracy theories and now you have ex-pilots and military intelligence folks that have persuaded men and women in the U.S. Congress to have hearings on UFOs/UAP and non human biologics? It's crazy and it appears to be a hopeless endeavor.

It's a circular argument.. all information has to be interpreted. Therefore, all personal knowledge is subject to biases from every source from which it is drawn. Which means people inherently can not determine truth independently. This in itself doesn't argue against ultimate truth, but acknowledges that we are dependent on external revelation to realise what the truth is. On our own it is impossible to discover because we must draw our conclusions from the point from which our investigation starts, which is limited and without context from our perspective. This leaves us with only two options.. we can never really know anything for sure and any pursuit of truth/ knowledge is pointless... Or the truth can only be found presented to us by someone who knows the full context of everything and is truly without bias.. God.

I used to give money to the SGU, I also bought their book, but I find their bias to be strong lately. For example they recently tried to say the trans surgery aka gender affirming surgery, regret was 1%. By citing a survey that asked those who got mastectomy surgery, 30 years ago, if they regret it. So of course the respondents were from way before the recent huge increase that is occurring today. It also self selects out all of those who committed suicide. These are the types of things that they would have pointed out if it weren’t so biased themselves. They also refuse to address any of the clear evidence against Dr. Fauci. I have lost all respect for them.

Got some evidence instead of a random claim? A link or place to search as YT doesn't like links. And nice potshot at the end, just chuck in the kitchen sink while you're at it, eh?

@@slappykh some people seem confused by my comment. The poster of this video are people who have a podcast called The Skeptics Guide to the Universe. It is generally good. But lately they show their bias. I was referring to their latest episode. In that episode they (the SGU) argued that the narrative of transgender surgery regret was bunk, they cited a medical survey without pointing out the problems with the survey.

    • @lewzealand4717

@@JoePiotti You made a random claim saying they're biased wrt their gender-affirming segment on the podcast, yet you did not show any countering evidence. Where is your data?
