To fix the "Belly Flop" issue, you can just add a couple Verner RCR thrusters under the nose so you can do a slow, controlled belly flop.
You can also fix the Phys-Warp issue by locking the rotator. It cant be done in the SPH, for some reason, and needs to be done once the craft has spawned in.
Also, it's not too hard to add a small twitch engine at the CoM to act as a VTOL thruster, it works well for Minmus.
I know this comment is well late but back in the old days we could simply move the engines/mass around automatically:

12:45 - Another thing that I've found almost always helps with directional control during landing is to disable the brakes on the nose gear and just use the main gear to brake; this puts your center of braking further behind your center of mass (so your plane naturally wants to go straight), and considerably increases the effectiveness of the nose-gear steering.

I built a vacuum VTOL Because that's what pushes the efficiency of a space plane to its limit. Using lifting surfaces in atmosphere, and gently using engines in vacuum, or low pressure bodys. To land horizontal, rather than vertically, before noting down to have the suspension take the brunt of the final landing.
I see an initial D reference upon landing, a true man of culture.

The minmus liftoff may be the coolest thing I've ever seen in ksp. Reminds me of a millennium falcon liftoff in star wars.
I've been waiting for motorised parts to come to KSP for years now (officially).... But now that I've got them, I'm a little overwhelmed with possibilities
I had an idea and drawings of the same principle back in the 1980s.
I was told that it was a (Cool Idea) but it is Science Fiction, 39 years ago. In fact it incorporated a Nuclear Drive System that developes a Bubble or Magnetosphere around the ship to be used for long distance space travel and possible reentry protection.
I'm glad someone else also has the forsight like I did.
You need to autostrut them to the rotars, then strut the rotars to the plane body, to avoid kracken attacks.

You could combat that pitching moment by placing the swivel axis a bit below the center of mass and then adjusting the angle of swivel in vertical mode as the cog changes

Matt, I've seen a lot of your videos and I'm learning a lot from the way you design and launch your SSTOs and ships. But the one thing that continually astounds me is how you can land so close to the KSC. I try to do the burns in Orbit and always either undershoot to the ocean before the peninsula, overshoot to the middle of the eastern ocean, or end up in an unrecoverable spin into the nearby mountains.
Could you do an instructional on how you plan and perform these deorbiting burns?
RCS build-aid mod shows you the wet the dry and the average centre of mass, and I found it easy to create crafts that have the wet and dry centre at the same point (was experimenting with fewest possible RCS thrusters). They were easy to fly even with FAR on, but I still can't land anything with that mod 80% of the time... Could be a great help with VTOL-s, and maybe I could even land one properly...

That was a rather steep ascent for a SSTO! I normally stay flat at ~250m a lot longer to get ~400m/s+ before I start my climb.

How did you get the servos to rotate in a manner matched with each other? They always default to rotating in opposite directions for me and I don't have any idea how to fix this in my attempts at a VTOL.

The VTOL system that can escape Kerbin's orbit is called a rocket. :) Also thank you for the entertainment!
For a first shot pretty cool. A dedicated vtol engine in the bows (small one just for vertical thrust) would make your craft a lot more stable during vtol manouvers. Otherwise, as said pretty cool for a first svivel mount engine v/stol.
When assembling this craft, how do you attach things with an air gap like that? It looked like the wings were just floating in space until you added other parts to connect them.
It reminds me a lot of the MCU version of the Quinjet!
Matt Lowne what are you doing that allows you to just drag and drop parts about anywhere and it still counts it as part of the ship despite not being connected to anything, as well as dragging the parts into each other like that. I've tried using part clipping but it did very little for me.
If I remember correctly you can enable moving parts everywhere you want in cheat menu (Alt+F10)
