I love how he goes into the hanger and instantly starts building these great looking designs, I go into the hanger and 30mins later I have a subpar looking plane that half the time won't even fly, let alone make it to space.
He has probably practiced the design many times before recording
It's all about the center of gravity balance. It's actually a lot harder without nuclear engine, since you basically have to accelerates inside the upper atmosphere and everything begins to overheat, then shoots up to space.
Planes aren't that tough - couple things to remember about basic aerodymanics and IRL flight... you'll find building a KSP airplane is pretty easy.
First time I ever played KSP on my buddies computer - I set out to build a plane. My buddy got all snooty "dude... you'll" never make it fly, planes are hard in this game"
Threw some parts togeather, zip zap zoop, noticed icon that had CG symbol on it... perfect, lift, need lift... other button ah... got it.
Adjusted wings and empanage until those were where I wanted them. Had to ask about how to rotate, and precisely set/move parts...
I created a plane that had a vague resemblance to the F86 sabre.
It "launch" chuckled a little at the antics of the little green goober "piloting" my machine.
Throttled her up, and started a takeoff roll, waited for the shock on the nose gear to get light - applyed a little backstick, and it rotated and flew just fine, takeoff was achieved at 80 m/s. Buddy was like "uhhh... how?! Y u no have SAS on?! "
"SAS? Wuzzat?" Says I
Yeah, SAS stability control... how are you flying without it?"
Says I "Well, by applying a small amount of dihedral angle to this planes wings - and balancing the distance between the tailplane and wings, then setting that in relation to the CG of the aircraft - I've created a plane that is a tiny bit heavy in the nose in relation to its center of lift - meaning it's inherently stable, and will stall predictably and in a nose down attitude, and when flown hands off, it tries to return to level flight. Don't you know how things fly? You took physics in highschool like I did... right?"
Blank stare... drools a bit.
He was basing his design on a previously made one, that he knew already flew. Assuming that most of the parts were the same, they would likely handle similarly.

KRAKEN SOLUTION HERE!!
Matt, there is a simple solution to the Kraken death shake problem. There is no need for strut spamming, or turning off auto-strut or SAS, warping, etc Notice, the problem only happens with complex ships or when ships are combined/docked. Two docked ships effectively create one complex ship. What they all have in common are multiple possible control points. The problem appears to be the result of confusion/competition between those control parts (probe cores, docking ports, etc.) as to whom is in control of the ship.
SOLUTION: Simply right click on any part with the option "Control from here", and assign control to that part. It doesn't matter which one you choose, and the Kraken goes away. It's just that simple.
I discovered this solution years ago, and have not lost a single ship to it since.
Good luck!

Hello Matt, I’ve just got into ksp and I love watching ur videos :)
Matt using the KAL!!
I didn't know it auto-starts! That's cool
@@MattLowne That's not all though, you can set fully custom RPM on rotors too! Also it can do special stuff to non-robotic things like alter RGB of lights and mess with wheel properties and junk :D
I always find it funny when you say "Hello one and all to a new video" because of how little sense it makes. Absolute perfection
She was a beauty! All that was needed was a relay antenna and some RCS thrusters and you've got all you could possibly need on it. Well done on making the jump to robotics BTW!
I’m getting KSP tomorrow and I’m so pumped about it! Thank you for showing me how absolutely fuccin amazing it is!
Remember: The apoasis is the more effective orbit location to make a turn
I swear, I was wondering (hoping) just a couple hours ago if you were going to upload a KSP video for your next vid, and here it is. Awesomeness.
Funnily enough this is my exact "style" too. Good looking plane, Matt.
I would love to see an SSTO trip to Moho and Eeloo. Especially Eeloo, it seems to never get shown much on CZcams. There's a weird exploratory feel I get from going to Eeloo, I think it has to do with it being so far away from Kerbin and the sun, that it feels as if I am exploring uncharted land.
Great video hope quarantine is going well for u
Looking pretty slick!
Wow it realy does look great
Yo Matt,
This is probably one of the first times I have been this early. I hope you are great!
I have a video suggestion: I was wondering if you could perhaps make a vtol ssto using the propeller parts for a duna or laythe mission. It's rare to see people using the propeller rotor parts, I guess in that capacity, and it would definitely be interesting to see!
Perhaps to extend this concept, the duna base could be extended with a mining and fuel processing building/section that has an airlock/docking port or clamp-o-tron so that it can land vertically on the roof and get refilled for long exploration journeys and maybe even for return trips.
Regardless, I hope all is well for you and your fam!
Amazing stuff as always. Keep up the good work. Don't catch that thing!
Yo love your vids man
Suggestion: have you tried binding the pitch, yaw, and roll control of your control surfaces to an action group, so that you don't have to manually activate and deactivate them every time?
I literally got my first SSTO to fly TODAY, like 20 minutes ago😅.
I had enough DeltaV to get to LKO, and then BARELY back on the runway, I basically had to glide it in🤦🏼♂️.
Took me like 5 days worth of work, but I think I finally got the concept of building functional SSTO’s down. Watching your videos has made me so much better at KSP it’s not even funny. Before I found your channel, I struggled to get to Dina without being worried about stranding Bob😂
Nice invention keep it up
I always enjoy your vids. 🖖🏻
Thats really cool!!
I've always done the same, if I have to clip parts I eyeball how much space I've overlapped up as a rough % and then just take away that much fuel. Feels like a good compromise.
I don't feel guilty clipping because it weighs the same as two tanks and unless you do it a specific way it still counts the aero forces the same too. All it does it make it shorter
That's a beautiful spacecraft if I've ever seen one.
Looks awesome
Amazing plane ya got there....
That ssto stunningly beautiful
BEAUTIFUL
Another great build. Stop apologising for everything. Things like part clipping etc are awesome when it's form over function, or just form in general. Build crazy ships, and I will watch.
I do love the way it looks (it's alot better than any ssto I could make 😂😂)

You should build a VTOL ssto where the VTOL engines can stow away into the fuselage
3:25 - THE KAL 1000 IS BLACK MAGIC.
Clap for carers such as Matt
Matt, we salute you
He can make SSTOs that are funcional AND looks good, I can’t even make a functional one.
I get that we sometimes tend to stick with the desing we really like. I once made Firefly look-a-like ship, since then im obsessed with cargo ships with frontal cargo loading and gimbaling VTOL engines.
I'm not even 3 minutes in & this SSTO is Swag AF, my dude.
This is what the shuttle wanted to be. I commend you!
I maintain that Southern Comfort is a good whiskey to mix with Coke. Wouldn't drink it straight, though.
As for KSP, I have two land bases on Eve, with a plane that travels between and refuels when it gets to each end. I also have a large space station in Eve Orbit, a mining base on Gilly, and a refueler that travels between the Gilly base and the Eve Orbit Station.
My entire set-up can transfer crew from LKO to Eve Orbit and back with permanent refuelable rockets, and gets from Kerbin to LKO and back with a small SSTO. At the moment, the only way I can get crew back from Eve surface is by sending single-use multi-stage rockets. What I'm after is a refuelable Eve SSTO.
I use mods - fuel tank switch, KIS, KAS, and a few others - so I can't use a lot of downloadable craft files. But I wouldn't mind some inspiration and just to know if it's possible.
I would really love coffee reviews!
Lets all clap for Matt, after all he's an essential worker

Hi Matt! Loved the video, which visual mods are you using, how did you get them working for the newest versions of KSP??
I already tried the Suntory Yamazaki once in a bar and I can testify that this one is really a great one! (but costly)
i have a suggestion for large space stations you have a backup feature so it can seperate or self destruct
since the mk 2 parts have a small amount of lift, could you use them as main wings without an unreasonable amount if thrust?
