I dont often comment but I feel like this would a good place to point out that if you flip the avatar map you actually get a pretty good stand in for Asia and most of the nations actually work as stand ins for a lot of real world countries.
Fire Nation= world war 2 Japan
Earth kingdom = pre collapse monarchist China
Water Tribes = Inuites on the southern and northern hemisphere
And Air nomads = Tibet within China who theres been a concerted effort to wipe out.
Its by no means a perfect representation and Atla creates its own world through amazing writting but I still find it to be a pretty neat thing to notice.

Something of note with Fire Nation history: shortly after the death of Avatar Kuruk, the pirate queen Tagaka of the Fifth Nation pirate fleet wiped out the remainder of the Earth Kingdom's navy.
When Tagaka wad eventually defeated and sent to Lake Laogai, the Fire Navy was sent to mop up the remainder of the Fifth Nation, and free all their slaves. It's not unreasonable to believe that the Fire Nation spent quite a few years afterwards as the sole major anti-piracy force for the Four Nations. It stands to reason that they'd get a swelled head over this which would lead to their sense of superiority.

I like that this sounds like I’m learning it in history class. It really puts into perspective how grand and awful historical events can lack human feeling when you’re learning them through facts alone. As consumers of the series, we got to see the emotional aspect of all of this. We saw how it defined generations and beat people down. We felt Roku’s pain when he lost his friendship. It puts into perspective how vile historical events really were for the average civilian, the soldier that became a number, the leader that became a symbol (of peace as well as evil). It shows you that you can know all the facts, but without personal stories, you can’t really understand how horrifying a situation really was.

Sozin helped Roku combat a volcano by siphoning heat from boiling magma and releasing it into the air, cooling it enough that it turns the lava back into a solid state. Water benders can change the state of water to ice or mist. Both of these forms of bending play with the laws of thermodynamics.
Water bender: Water => Ice => Water => Mist
Fire bender: Magma = Lava => Earth
    Earth bender: Earth => Lava
    Toph literally invented metal bending.
Theoretically, a talented, intelligent, and skilled enough fire bender should be able to steal the heat from anything. Just as they can express fire and heat, they should also be able to remove enough heat from something, or someone, that the target freezes.
Imagine seeing Azula performing a firebending technique, launching a punch toward an enemy. Nothing happens. No spark. No flame. Just the telltale shimmer of heat radiating out the back of that person as their body freezes solid.

Both nations have the same cultural aesthetics too - Earth Kingdom (specifically Ba Sing Se) having Manchu (Qing dynasty) design and Fire Nation having classic Han Chinese design from the Tang dynasty.

(I think Iroh was more or less surprised once he entered some years later as a refugee.) He was the first to enter the wall that doesn't mean he got that far. I also highly doubt he knew much about the Dai-Li who could conduct sabotage and guerilla fighting. (I personally think that's how his son Lu-Ten died. They simply found out he has a high ranking leader, possibly even found out he was the son of the general and prince and decided to take him out.)

@@mill2712 The layout would've certainly been a problem since that's always a problem in sieges and it can be changed due to earthbending. The scale of the city would've been pretty easy to guess based off the wall since everyone is living above ground. Of course the fire nation doesn't know that so maybe they overestimate how many soldiers they'd need.
The Dai-Li could conduct sabotage and pick off a few key figures (Like Mako, nice theory) before they would become useless against the fire nation. They wouldn't conduct guerrilla warfare since they're spies not warriors. There's also only like a dozen dozen of them so using them as warriors instead of crushing fear of the ongoing war would be a waste of lives.

You don't have to be a warrior to be a guerilla, just fight in a nonconventional way (In real life anyone can be a guerilla fighter even with minimal training.) and in the urban setting like Ba-Sing-Sae is really easy to do.
Yeah the layout would be difficult to know not only because of the city's massive size, and earthbending being able to change and make problems almost instantly but because Iroh was the first Fire nation general to even breach the wall. How could they even know what to do. If I was him I would also have to make a tactical retreat from the city. Probably even wait a few years for the comet to come as well.
(I also would never let my only son and future heir to the throne in the heat of battle especially in a siege and would be near my side at all times but hey that's just me.)

Their navy was the best. their military even though used as comical material they are actually quite terrifying. They use any and all resources that they can from sozins comet to animals and their own enemy’s deigns along with their fanatical generals who would go as far as to kill spirits, not to mention their fortresses, along with their forces that are specialized to take on the different nations, and were even shown to be able to go head to head with the Avatar and basically wipe out the water tribes

Something I really appreciate about the original show is that it doesn't shy away from the Fire Nation's claim of superiority. The Fire Nation *is* technologically superior to the rest of the world, and in many ways (like with gender) it's socially superior as well. The show makes this pretty clear by the final season. But even with those things considered, the Fire Nation are still the villains. It doesn't matter what advancements they have; imperialism is still destructive, and nationalism is still wrong. Actual countries use the Fire Nation's argument all the time to justify conquest and exploitation of "poorer" or "worse-off" territories, even today. And this children's show looks at that argument, acknowledges that it might be based in fact, and says it still doesn't matter. Powerful stuff.
