- Today I'm going to attempt to solve the Hinomaru Puzzle. this was an exchange puzzle by long-time Puzzle Exchange participant Pavel Curtis at IPP21, held in Tokyo in 2001. The object of the puzzle is to place the 12 two-sided dominoes in the tray to form a picture of the Japanese flag. The solution is unique.

There's obviously a lot of ways the back could go. You have 3 completely blank pieces that could be turned 180, or shuffled between themselves, and also 3 other pairs of pieces that could be swapped. It seems kind of amazing it's not more unique, but there are only 5 different patterns a 1/2 piece can have: blank, full, corner, or edge x2.

With 12 pieces and two sides to choose from on each piece, there are 4096 possible combinations of choices for which sides face up. I'm a programmer, so to solve this puzzle, I encoded each piece with what parts of the circle that piece could fill in (corner, center, blank, half edge, other half edge). I programmed a quick loop to look at the 4096 configurations, and it gave me a list of 14 possible configurations that had the whole circle exactly once. Then I tried each combo until I found the one that worked.
I find there's a lot more mathematics to these kinds of puzzles than most people realize.

@@Amira_Phoenix I suppose some ways of building a circle would end up with the white part of the pieces could end up in a variety of shapes. The correct solution needs both the red to make a circle and the white to make a rectangle.
Now, that's a *first* in history, someone on CZcams gets to solve one of Pavel Curtis's hardest puzzles. Wait until you try out the Devil's Doven sets, it's really hard even with the Half Doven set.

These are some of my favorite puzzles because for some reason I love hearing the sounds of the pieces sliding around when it's quiet
The only noise I dislike that on are the 3d printed scraping noises. It just triggers my Miso for some reason. This one I don't think is 3d printed so the noises didn't bother me. I know, it is strange. Welcome to having mIsophonia.
Theoretically there is more than one solution. The 3 white tiles are interchangeable. The tile at "one o'clock" can swap with the tile at "4 o'clock". The tile at "6 o'clock" can swap with the tile at "9 o'clock".

Technically, since rotation matters for every piece that isn’t a solid colour, you can consider an additional permutation of the solution for every inconsequential rotation, without swapping anything. I believe that’s 2x2x2x2 = 16
Multiply that by however many permutations you get by swapping identical faces to find there’s several hundred additional ‘solutions.’
I've done this puzzle. It took me hours. I distinctly recall arriving at a solution like yours and my friend whose puzzle it was saying, "No, that is not the answer." My recollection is the right answer does have a proper circle for the flag, not the extra bumps....
I definitely prefer the sequential discovery puzzles instead of the more "jigsaw" type puzzles like this one. I did like the added twist of having there be two sides to each piece but these kind of puzzles still usually just boil down to a lot of trial and error instead of those "AHA!" moments of figuring out a new step in a sequential discovery puzzle.

Something small that might've saved a few minutes and dead-end attempts is that once we know the solution will probably require some number of the "blank/all-white" pieces, we can just remove them wholesale, pretend they don't exist, and see if we can build the circle from what's left. If we can't we add back one blank on it's other side. If no circle, remove blank-A, replace with blank-B (then B for C, then C for D). This saves time by not repeatedly flipping over tiles we place trying to find a blank we can swap (as they're already "out").
Will always envy your endurance on puzzles like this. I would've had a horrible headache during and afterward.

while hard as hell, I'm sure of it, it puzzles me (no pun intended) how much time is wasted on things that clearly can't work and how little time is spend with logical analysis.
for example:
1) we know 100% sure that we will need 1-2 full red pieces (find them and find what the other side shows)
2) we know 100% sure that we will need 3-4 full white pieces (find them and find what the other side shows)
3) if we use only 3 full white pieces we will need two tiny corners that are mirrored and there's only one shape that can join them. find the pieces that have it and check the other side)
this gives you a huge boost in solving the puzzle.
I'm not 100% sure that this is enough to solve the puzzle but it sure helps to discard a lot of combinations.
I agree that some deductive reasoning could narrow the possibilities down significantly, but none of these points you made are 100% guaranteed.
1) as you can reduce the number of full red tiles down from 2 to 1 by having one of them replaced by 2 other tiles that stick out from the circle, the same could be said of the other tile, reducing it down to 0 fully red tiles.
2) same as point 1, it could be 0-4 white tiles. If all of the tiles are horizontal, all tiles will have red on them, for example.
3) even if there are exactly 3 white tiles, the single white tile could be in a corner, rather than the centre of its edge, giving us one tiny corner tile and one half edge tile.
These points *might* be confirmed if the number of each tile was counted (which would help narrow down the possibilities regardless), but without knowing that information, there's no way of guaranteeing the number of each tile type in a helpful way.

the center of the circle can't be made without using, at least, 1 full red tile. that's 100% sure given the size of the circle and the shape of the pieces.
the puzzle is 6x4, the pieces are 2x1 each and we only have 2 pieces that are half-white.
we know the red circle will be in square of 4x4 so we have two rectangles of 1x4 (one at each side) of pure white.
to cover those rectangles we need either 4 pure white pieces or three pure white pieces and the only two half-white pieces. there's no other mathematical way to do it.
@@WilliamWizer If the four pieces down each side are horizontal, while the four in the middle are vertical, then there would be no fully white nor fully red tiles. I doubt this is possible with the actual pieces, and it would be easy to check that this isn't the solution given the constraints it places on the pieces, but until this case has been checked you cannot guarantee that there is a piece that is fully one colour.
This whole video is the best analogy for the health issues I've had for the past year.
Just keep trying, new perspectives, fitting things together. For so long it's felt like doing the same thing over and over and getting nowhere. Praying and getting deeper in my faith, so that's been a plus.

I like the big ones but I appreciate them being far apart, it's almost like an event. The smaller ones are just as fun and sometimes seem more challenging.

I love the smaller jigsaw puzzles as well as the huge extravagant ones. Also the lego puzzles are always really really impressive.
I love a variety of puzzles, but it definitely depends on my mood. I love the jigsaws when trying to relax, the sequential discovery ones pique my interest, the storylines are entertaining, etc. Mostly, I love the ones that I can tell you are most passionate about because it makes it fun to watch you be excited to solve them.

My favorite puzzles to watch you solve are the flat acrylic ones like this! They always look so simple but then are somehow nearly impossible to solve. My second favorite is fan-made puzzles, I'd love to see more of those!

The least favourite category would be the brass/smaller ones where it's difficult to follow along with the solve but even then still enjoy your commentary and humour. These seemingly "simple" puzzles are great little inbetweeners. Your big production puzzlemachines and the ones you find and show us are faaaantastic as well, downright nervewracking at times, but little treats like this is so relaxing and truly enjoyable as well. Their beautiful simplicity is very much appreciated.

Dude, listening to you rambling to your self trying to solve this puzzle, in a sense it was soothing because of it feeling like how my brain processes problems. This puzzle solve sounded different from the others from you in the past for some reason. Also wish that I could get ahold of that puzzle, I really like that one. I do enjoy listening to your videos and popping in and out of the videos as I sit doing something. For the most part, the physical puzzles in general that you do all the way down to real escape rooms, not a fan of digital escape, Idk not my cup of tea. The story lore that comes with some of the puzzles, I absolutely love, the work and ideas behind capturing where your imagination went for a theme is fun all the way down to the random blips in random videos tying to a big reveal of something.
The puzzle was cool but this video was absolutely awesome. The calm peaceful music with the solid, intentional clacks of the tiles being placed and shifted was just so relaxing and tranquil. Excellent video Chris.
Chris, been following you for quite some time now, initially it was an interesting in magic, but I then discovered the world of puzzles through you! Had the privilege of visiting Japan last year and made a point of picking up some Karakuri puzzles. Even got some of my colleagues to join me for the trip out there and they were in awe! I really like small puzzles, and wooden ones that you need to go in certain orders for. The extravagant ones are fun but they aren’t as realistic, I love seeing stuff that I could do at home!!

I like both styles of puzzles. The sequential/discovery and these jigsaw on steroids. In fact, it was the DaVinci codex puzzle book that brought me to this channel. Ended up staying for the magic, cardistry, and everything else.

I have been watching your stuff it feels like for ever. I enjoyed the Hanayama puzzles the most out of most your videos where you and/ir others would solve or compete. The story line videos have been pretty good. But, I really just come to your channel mainly for the magic tricks and puzzles. :P
I love the variety of puzzles you do, but my favourites are the larger ones that fill the top of a table with multiple puzzles to solve; they feel like a bit of an adventure

Genuinely love all the puzzles. You had an awesome sequential discovery machined puzzle maybe 4-5 years ago it was blue in color. I like the machined puzzles whether they are complicated or just a dazzling move!

Puzzles I like... can be anything as long as it's challenging and is piquing my interest... I used to really like the intros and the themed aspects of some of them. Ancient Maya Sun-Dial, Harry Potters Briefcase, Yo Ho Ho Chest...Some of the Cubes were interesting (Got a little stale in a way just based on them being printed and kind of the same in appearance I think)... While I do like some of the larger ones.. They have HUGE price tags too.. so.. LOL.. but always watching with interest as to what is going to happen next or be found... The puzzles where the main reason I started watching the channel and I started literally watching them all... Intros, background music.. themes... storylines.. ALL good work.. and most of the puzzles are great, very few have I thought were a little too simple and maybe milked a little.. but still...lol

I'm not gonna lie I enjoy everything from the ground up. I really love the hands on puzzles even something like the hanayama love puzzle. It's an escape if you know what I mean bro. RAM FAM all day keep changing lives man!
I think the best approach with this one is to remove every piece that could have a white side first, they are the ones that create restrictions so keeping them separate is useful, then I would see if you could get a solution where all of them are white (there are four of them so that’s the case where you have two on each side, trying to build a circle with all of the rest of the pieces in the center), then I would try to create one with two white pieces (I recognize that three up is most likely to be correct from a puzzle perspective and watching till the end it was, but two up is more restricting so I would’ve tested it before 3 up), then I would try with three up, focusing on one of the white pieces other sides at a time, it would mean a lot more testing of the possibilities but would be structured enough to make the puzzle easier
Also, it would be important to keep track of any piece that’s the same on both sides just because again it imposes a restriction onto the puzzle, for example, if there was any piece that on both sides had a corner red that would need to be put in horizontally you would actually be able to immediately eliminate the case of four whites, because it would mean that piece would have no spot, I really couldn’t tell if any of the pieces were like that when watching the video but it’s another thing that I would try out if I were actually solving

Really like the bigger, more intricate puzzles you've done (e.g. the one with the goblet or the one whose sides looked like the facades of a gothic cathedral).
I like extravagant puzzles with in depth stories. The small puzzles are good as a pallet cleanser between big productions

This seemed like such a stressful puzzle to solve. I probably would’ve gotten frustrated after a half hour and had to walk away. I do really love the big puzzles with a storyline to the solve best, the sequential puzzles with a cool story. 😊
I admire your patience, Chris! Because you asked, my favourite puzzles are sequential mechanical. My absolute least favourite ones involve electronics; voices, memory puzzles, RGB LEDs, tablets, QR codes, AR overlays... burn it with fire.

Honestly Chris… it’s you yourself that I come to see -the puzzles are a bonus.
I really enjoy the big flash extravagant puzzles. I pretty much only get to see those on this channel. I also like the sequential discovery. I think there is a niche there.
The way the circle's corner arc doesn't match up and how the shadows on the edge of the pieces show that their surfaces don't quite align... I bet someone could step this up a level by beveling the pieces so that even a seemingly correct solution was wrong until everything was perfectly flush.
