- This GM 6l80 transmission had a slipping torque converter and lots of torque converter shudder along with metal in transmission pan. We are going to squeeze some more miles out of it with a simple tune change.

As a retired mechanic I could not understand why GM wanted and let torque converter slip 20 RPM's in a normal position and expect the torque converter to Last just don't make sense !!engineering stupidity gone to seed I understand it takes the smoothness out of it button longevity lives over comfort in my book lock that baby up and let her rock..
Also good idea to bypass transmission cooler line thermostat.thats one of the biggest reasons fluid overheats
I am so glad I ran into this channel, I was about to buy a new converter but since I just got HP tuners will try this. Thank you much
Did it help?
It sure did, after doing the same it has held up.
I'm getting ready to do this. So glad I saw your video. Thanks
Excellent GM warranty comments! Very valuable nuggets of info.
This helped me diagnose and fix a 14 gmc sierra 6.2l 6l80. Thankyou. Priceless info.
This is great. Getting my 6L50 tuned this week to get rid of the slip and shudder in 5th and 6th.
I just got this loaded onto my 2014 Express 3500, thank you! Hoping it works well towing too
BlueCat transmission tool works great with hptuners. Gear and tire changes also require transmission tunning.
Keeps us updated on the life of the unit tested here. Good video with data and suggestions!
Talked to the customer a couple weeks ago. So far they have only put 1000 miles on it but really like the way it drives. I programmed my Dad's Tahoe like this as a preventative measure and he has probably put 10K miles on it so far with no problems. There is about 275K on that Tahoe.
Good to know
Any more updates from the customer?
This is phenomenal
Wish you lived in nc I’d pay you to do this to my suburban!
Just excellent 👌
Metal shaving is usually 5th 6 OD drum clutches plates or 3-5 R drum failing also.
you can also click on the KPA and change it to PSI. THANKS FOR THE VIDEO!
And thank you for the tip!
@@TechnicianRed
Yes any text box or parameter you see it always has the units beside it. Whether it’s in pressure, speed, or time. You can just click on the unit and it’ll cycle through the available options.
Like 600 kpa, you changed it to 1000 kpa. Just click on kpa and it’ll go to PSI.
It’s also been a year. Do you have a new update??
what a surprises !! nice job man
i have chevy impala 2014 new modal with 6t70 transmissions it does this like crazy when every i drive in high way around 65-70 mph and also when shifting its shudder
do you think this will work when do programing stuff?
Thanks for the video.
Do not follow the 6L80 tuning advice he gives here. EG he can be seen at 29:11 to be completely wiping out the Line pressure to PCA trans calibration table probably because it’s called “Desired Pressure” and he thinks he desires max pressure. Scary he is giving advice.
See there is a pressure regulator piston in the valve body that allows a pressure control solenoid to control line pressure fed to all the other PCS for shifting. That regulator is spring loaded, controlling the offset, and the diameters of the regulator pistons control the gain. On some OS versions it uses gain and offset for the TCM to understand the relationship of pump pressure to line pressure. In others it uses the Desired Pressure table to understand the pressure produced by the relationship between the line pressure to PCA pressure, this is called the calibration and can replace the simple offset and gain formula with a table.
Yeah, so if you didn’t know that, you shouldn’t be touching it. The people that should be tuning this are TransGo and Sonnex who should have a mechatronics lab with a running 6L80 on the bench. They would need to do so because they manufacture upgraded pressure control regulator kits.
Careful as too much pressure, yes it'll hold things but it can always prematurely wear out the Crankshaft thrust bearing.
Just tested this on a 2014 6.2l gmc 6l80. Making noise holding 25-30 tcc line psi, sliping up to 130rpm. Activated tcc lock. O slip, no more shudder or noise 530psi at tcc line.
So what im sayng is, id rather up the psi enough to save the trans vs trans rebuild. I dont think there will be any negative effects from removing these damaging harmonics from the tune
2017 Yukon XL. 80K miles. Trans fluid and filter serviced @ 70k.
Seems to be running smooth. No shift problems.
Id like to tune it as precautionary measure but am not familiar with hptuners and not necessarily interested in purchasing the device and software (not sure if sold together or how that works).
Should most reputable transmission specialists or maybe a performance shop have access to these tools and software to perform this service for me?
Mine just started slipping today, going to rip this pos trans and go to a mad dog hopefully this will resolve my issue, man i miss the manual transmission days.
And also a manual clutch not hydraulic! Lol. My little work daily is a Ford ranger and I go through hydraulic slave cylinders more than I do underwear.😂😂😂 My ranger has 507,000 miles and still rocking the original engine transmission and rear end, but lost count of hydraulic slave cylinders!
Anyone in new york, NJ or Ct doing this? Does this really work? 2019 suburban with this issue lots of shudder
I was wondering if you could help me out, i have a 2013 Caprice with a cam and I'm experiencing some surge created by the tranny settings and i want to decrease the shift point a little lower which should fix the issue, I'm hoping lol, can u help? Thnx
How do you get someone to hp tune your truck who does it
Howdy from Central Texas (Waco). Where in South Texas? I have a 2010 Escalade ESV 6.2l 6l80 did this and would like to attempt a tune before $3-6k. One owner, 200,000 miles, slipped couple times and that bouncing tack. Or do you know someone closer to me that could attempt this for me.
Would you be able to tune an AF33 transmission with this software? I think it's absolutely insane how they "want" the torque converter clutch to slip with the clutch applied ... like, how dumb do they have to be to think that's a good idea? You would never tell a new manual transmission driver to rest their foot slightly on the clutch for any reason, and in fact, people are told not to. Either downshift if it needs more torque or needs to reduce vibration. Sadly my AW-55-50SN has this partial slip feature but it's more primitive and pretty easy to defeat by driving in 4. I just wish I could defeat it altogether.
Great video. I have a 15 Sierra that has very minimal slip. 170K miles. Would you recommend doing the same tune to prolong the 6L80? I haven’t dropped my pan yet, fluid is a little dark on the dipstick but nothing crazy. Thank you.
I would recommend a similar tune. Disable TCC in 1-4 and call for 0RPM slip in 5-6 but leave max TCC apply pressure alone. Only crank up max pressure if you absolutely need to. I've heard it's possible for too much TCC apply pressure to apply too much force to the thrust bearings on the crankshaft in the engine but there is no way for me to verify if that is true or not. From my research looking at cutaways of several lockup converters I don't see it as being a problem but I could be wrong.
@@TechnicianRed Roger that! Appreicate it!
So much learned here, my 2017 8L90 started shutter at 39k miles about a year ago. Hadn't a clue, thought I had a loose wheel. Last week at 44k miles it came back for 60 miles. Can my 8L90 be saved? I bought Shutter Fixx, which I was going to add half. It would be in there if it had a filler tube. Like everyone else, I feel burnt by GM. Any tips to avoid as many issues as possible? I drove 600 miles this week without noticing any shutter. thx
There was a service bulletin for the 8 speed transmissions. Power flush and put in the additives from the start of the video supposedly fixes the 8L90 transmissions.
Does 6l90 and 6l80 have the same filter
Wood this help whta happen is when coming to a stop feels like somebody gives you a lite rear end kick and does have a slip when only costing low speed 1 2 gear will this elimate that?
Following
How do you reflash the computer after the new trans installation
You need to pay to get access to OEM service info and have a J2534 box to program it. I recommend paying a mobile programmer to do it for you. That's what we do.
What do you feel is a acceptable off target amount? I datalogged mine lastnight and found it was approx 40 RPM above the desired slip, not nearly as bad as the one in your video.
40 RPM is still too much. I would do the reprogram ASAP before the converter gets anymore wear. It should be within about 5 RPM of desired slip. This is just a guess (I'm comparing it to a 4l60E which maintains a very accurate converter slip RPM)
@@TechnicianRed will do thank you for the reply!
Couple questions. 2011 Silverado, My tables are quite a bit different on desired pressure by quite a bit. Assuming the values are different based on the X axis numbers at the top of my chart are different. My max pressure tab was the same values as yours and I left that alone based on your comment below. But my TCC desired pressure table, highest value in the lower corner is 42. Guessing I will just duplicate that across the table at 42 being the highest value shown for stock to increase the line pressure. That sound correct to you? I left the max pressure table alone at the 953.
You’re probably looking at different units. You can click the units hyperlink and it will cycle. If you copy paste data from the internet you better also know what units you’re copying and pasting.
Thank you for your reply. Yes I didn’t copy and paste anything from the Internet. I use the highest value on my table and duplicated that number for all of the cells the way that was done in the video.
Does the after tune feels like the 6l90 TC or the hd models now ?
You can hardly tell its been tuned. The average person would never notice anything changed at all.
Where are you located? I need to come see you lol. My 2018 Silverado surges bad around 50 mph
I second this..we needs a location..ive got 2015 yukon xl just started these symptoms
South TX
@@TechnicianRed where in south tx?
Awesome. It doesn’t look that hard at all. Will the same vales work for a 2015 Suburban?
Yes
I have a FTI 3200 Stall
Triple Clutch torque converter
and my 6l80e transmission it's
shudder 55 mph. it didn't do it with
the stock torque converter.
Do you think i need to get tune
I don't have any experience with aftermarket performance torque converters but I imagine the manufacturer would want it tuned to reduce slip. I would call the manufacturer and ask their technical support.
Good comparisons and explanations, but you need to wear protective gloves!
I would but I hate not having dexterity.
I’ve followed this step by step and my lockup is very harsh when this tune is applied, any advice?
Was your TCC slipping before trying this tune? If you use this tune on a good torque converter clutch I imagine it would probably shift pretty firm.
How do I get ahold of you on the phone?
Did you eliminate the v4 mode?
Yes, I always disable DOD when doing a TCC tune.
Could you not flush the transmission and put in a new torque converter?
NEVER flush transmissions! That's a good way to loosen up some crud and have it clog a solenoid screen, stick a solenoid, or jam up a spool valve in the valve body. As far as replacing the torque converter only- Don't do it! Torque converters are pretty pricey and the labor is too high to make that option a good route. Besides, these transmissions give LOTS of problems so yeah you might get the torque converter to start working again but it won't be long before the transmission fails and takes the new torque converter out with it. If you need a torque converter on one of these with less than 100K the transmission fluid hasn't been maintained so the trans isn't going to last that much longer. If you need one with a trans that has >100K the trans won't last much longer due to mileage. Either tune it and run it till she blows or replace the whole transmission. Those are your only two good options.
Where are you located?
South TX
You are wrong about that TCC apply ramp rate. A rate that is smaller will apply it faster.
Can I do same thing on 8l90?
Probably
@@TechnicianRed on 8l90 In apply ramp pressure 400x6k rpm is 1024.0 what should I put? In your video is 445
@@faridgadimov5955 I would change them all to 1,024. Basically do just as I did but use your higher number.
@Technician Red thank you l will. Also I did apply 318. release 317 1-6gear and left 7 and 8 untouched that's ok?or do 7th gear to?
Have a 2016 Silverado with 109xxx on now changed fluid at 80xxx and disabled 1,2,3d lockup is all I did and disable dod doesn’t slip or anything but
Would increase line pressure hurt any thing or just help prolong the transmission ?
I wouldn't try increasing pump output line pressure as that would cause all of your shifts to be too firm. But I would tune it to command 0RPM of slip in overdrive to keep that TCC from getting unnecessary wear and tear. You probably don't need to increase converter line pressure if your TCC is still good but I doubt it would hurt it.
@@TechnicianRed Can you do a video where you show how to increase the pressures to firm up the shifts? Running larger tires on my truck and I just want to get a little firmer shifts. Also Like to see how to use the "fastlearn" and "clean" features in the VCM Scanner. Thanks!
@@batsy74 sorry but that is over my skill level right now. I don't do custom tunes- that takes lots of experience to do properly without causing harm.
From what it looks like, why isnt this GM covering aaaaaaaall these transmissions? Clearly theyre aaaaall going to fail.
I can barely hear anything
