- Here is a little video walk through on how to make your mountain bike as quiet as a pros bike. One thing you will notice watching world cup race videos is how quiet the riders bikes are as they go past the camera. One of the most common ways the teams achieve this is by utilizing mastic tape and padding the bike wherever the chain may contact the frame. In this video I will walk you through how to do a basic coverage as well as how to add small fins and make it even more quiet.
Here is a link to the Mastic Tape online if you don't have access to a local Hardware store.

Very nice. To take away a lot of that chain slap, swith your derailleur clutch to the on position. Or adjust it if it already is on.
Thanks Kyle , love your work mate 👍👍 just ordered 3 rolls of the stuff 😜! Glad to here your slowly getting better mate and absolutely ecstatic 🤩 that your back on the MTB 👍🤟🤟
Great tip(s)!!! I'll be hittin up Lowe's tomorrow for sure. Can also use small pieces around cable housings where they tap on the frame. Heat gun tip is priceless! Really does help it to set up and stay stuck for extended use. Plain electrical tape unravels and chips easily. Thanks for this, I appreciate a quiet bike for sure.
Ol' Roy MTB, etc. yeah no worries at all! Thanks for watching the video. Hope it works for ya!
I found a roll of this tape in my garage. I had no idea what it was for, found your video, and as it turns out I've got a use: protecting the frame of my bike from the kick-stand coming up & banging on the frame, chipping the paint. I can imagine many uses for this stuff. Thanks!
Glad you found a good use for that tape!
I order some of that 3m tape and It was a very good investment. I made some custom patterns for certain areas on the frame and it came out pretty good. Thanks for the idea!
Loved it, thanks for the tip!
Thanks! Love your vids too!
Old inner tube cut and spiralled around the chainstay, two cable ties. Practically free and very effective.
Nice video, awesome idea
Super dope tip. I’m definitely gonna but some soon.
Awesome! Yeah I really like this mastic tape and I have it on all of my bikes :)
Good video. Would a clutch derailleur PLUS a chain guide prevent the need for this DIY?
I was just watching this and thinking u sound exactly like Kyle and then I looks at your channel and I was like, “oh right it is!”
Haha thats rad!
Wow didn’t think I’d get a reply!!! Congrats on gaining so many followers on the past few months 👏
Kyle & April - Ride MTB Just wondering is there any cheaper version of scotch tape because it’s £20
do you rate this technique over the neoprene chainstay protectors you can buy?
Have you tried kydex for mtb protection?
It's probably irrelevant mentioning now, that your rear derailleur clutch (Shimano Shadow+) ist turned off. You need to flip the lever towards the rear of the bike. You are even slightly moving it with your thumb at 4:58.
Where do you recommend for park riding in Idaho? Moving here from California not too long ago. Being close to B.C. is amazing, but have heard good things about Silver Mtn
Yhigma yeah Kellogg is amazing! I have also heard really good things about grand targhee in Jackson Wyoming and we spend a ton of time riding at Jug Mountain!
I used my old factory grips, cut the end of and cut down the middle and held it on with zip ties
I bought it but it sticks from both sides. Is it normal?
For the bottom you can just use a chain guide(the ones that zip tie on).
Yeah those definitely help a lot too !
what are you thoughts on using an old tire tube
That works well too! Maybe not quite as sleek or quiet but it definitely protects the paint
👍🏻
Does using this type of protection damage the paint?
No it peels right off when you're done and at most you will need a little goo gone to clean up the adhesive marks.
I lived in Boise and Kuna in the 80's
And...
Hey there what is the name of the tape you used ?
amzn.to/32AjVvT here is a link!
tl;dr: 3M 2228 Rubber Mastic Tape works well as a thick protective tape.
Those little "pockets" you made look like they'll rip right off after a chain strike or two. Should have made them first, then put the layer over top to have that professional finished look, and help them to last.
If your bike is black in color, it's fine. But for someone like me who has bright orange frame, it looks ridiculous. What I did is I double wrapped it with masking tape. In that way, I can preserve the color of my bike.
@brian soares what's wrong? Are you on your periods?
Have you never heard of clutch?
yeah they work decently well but if you ride hard on rough terrain your clutch will still allow the chain to slap quite a bit
@@AprilRideMTB Actually that makes sense
After all the technology i am suprised bike manufacturers have not come up with better ideas, after market plastic cases look bad. Snd the factory slap stickers are useless.
There’s something wrong with ur Mech
What’s going on? Not working?
10 freaking dollars.....i got my chainstay protected for 30 inr ( 40 cents )
I order some of that 3m tape and It was a very good investment. I made some custom patters for certain areas on the frame and it came out pretty good. Thanks for the idea!
