    I believe weak ego can also lead us into abusive or insatisfying relationships - if someone doesn’t have boundaries and/or afraid to be alone, they will stay with someone for the wrong reasons. And won’t leave, bc they will be telling themselves well, everyone is imperfect, I won’t find anyone better etc etc but in the long term in can de damaging for them…

    Ever since I was a child, I was characterised by a weak ego, I’d say. In my teenage years the whole thing only worsened. Now, as a young adult, I’m still in a bad place. Even though I now live alone, I struggle a lot to feel assertive even in the stupidest things. I set boundaries and I feel super guilty and bad about myself afterwards, that I end up saying sorry. I feel the whole world dislikes me, so I try to please people. But no matter the pleasing, I still think many people dislike or even hate me. I don’t think I’m worth of saying my opinion or dressing nicely. I avoid speaking up. I also feel ridiculous every time I open my mouth. I think I sound stupid and I kind of remind myself of my father, who is not the kind of person I’d want to be. So I try to not be like him at all but I end up repressing some natural characteristics I have, even the good ones (for example good sense of humour and bubbly personality when happy - it reminds me of him and I hate that. I try to be serious all the time). The result is that I never become the exact opposite because it is just not me and I feel even unhappier and unworthy. Sorry for the rant, I just wanted to let these things out. You see, I prefer writing anonymous CZcams comments rather than journaling. There is no need for anyone to read it and sorry if I wasted your time.

      You're not alone on this, dude/dudette. I grew up with split parents, and early on, before my mom did some growing of her own, let her bias and personal issues affect my relationship with him. I grew up as a single child even though I have siblings. I always felt dumb just for seeing things the way I see it because I'll look to my left and see someone doing it in a way that makes more sense. My experiences with impatient teachers or mentors alike were mostly just me not getting it initially and then they'd take over completely. Devoiding me of a chance of redemption or learning. Whenever I'd encounter that, it just left the thought that I was so bad at learning that there wasn't much hope in teaching me. And any praise along the way would get overshadowed by the reminders of those times in a way that says "yeah right. If you think I'M good, you don't know what you're talking about." I also moved around alot as a kid so I got used to the idea of nobody sticking around as much I'd want them to. Only enough to think that pleasing them was the only means. I always felt out of place because no one knew the real me, (on the account of my constant people-pleasing) but wouldn't ever have the courage to look in the mirror and say "I am who I am, so let's figure that out. And try to be proud of it. I procrastinated on that talk with myself for so long, I don't even know if I love doing my hobbies anymore. I'll find myself wanting to give up just because sometimes i get so pressed about not knowing. And it's weird because I like to learn stuff. But "not knowing" in itself discourages me to the point I think "why bother?" For one reason or another. It's hard. But at least we're trying now, right?

    "Another sign is having a fragile sense of self"
    As someone diagnosed with schizotypal disorder, this is really what gets at me. Feeling like a construct able to change rather than feeling like a well-rounded person with strong convictions and a sense of self, a firm identity so to say, is literal hell. Constantly questioning your own identity and sense of self to the point you start to feel hollow inside.

    • @myrtila

    • @lameduck3105
      @lameduck3105 Před 2 lety +2

      @@myrtila No it's not the most common symptom of schizotypal disorder. It's more likely a consequence of depersonalization that some might experience. A feeling of being robotic, not really in touch with your emotions, like looking at yourself from an outside perspective and not really "be there" in the moment. A feeling of being outside your body and mind and not really grasping what is going on there. A feeling of having no strong identity to cling to. Feeling all empty inside and having to "perform" or "act" to show others sign of an identity within you.

    Your video on mind wandering changed my life. Learning about the default mode network (DMN) has allowed me to take a proactive approach to mindfulness and the pain I used to feel in my chest every afternoon (started a few months after I went remote at work) has disappeared!!!! I was able to become proactive by keeping a diary for two days to identify when I was ruminating so I could know when I need to be on guard against the activation of my DMN and take action to become present. This has been super effective for me. You mentioned journaling in this video. I would love a video on journaling specifically if you don’t have one already!! I know these videos are for a general audience of people with mental illness so some things aren't going to apply to me perfectly but even knowing that I still can't help but get a little defensive whenever any mental health video says, "Make sure you have a consistent bed time and make going to sleep a priority!" Cause I just can't. Something is majorly wrong with my circadian rhythm because I cannot sleep for 30-36 hours and then I pass out from pure exhaustion for anywhere from 5-12 hours before being awake for another 30-36 hours, rinse and repeat. I'd LOVE to have a consistent bed time and sleep like a normal human being. But if I try, I just lie there awake for HOURS until I finally get bored and give up or get up to start my day. I really wish it was as simple as, "Your body COULD sleep if you wanted it to but you just stay up instead." It sometimes feels like my brain WANTS me to suffer.

    Freudian psychoanalytic theory explains the core of personality development as you so effectively articulate. This is an important video because too many therapists are unclear on these concepts, thus are often less effective in their efforts to assist others in growing. Less likely to help others with unhealthy personality development, when you lack understanding of how healthy personality develops. I am a little jealous of you because you have access to practice your profession and do it well, something I have never had. Nevertheless, great job!

    • @myrtila
      @myrtila Před 2 lety +1

      Hey, I just wanted to say that you should not stay single for a life. You don’t deserve something you don’t want. You just need to make peace with yourself, before entering a new relationship. But please don’t panic. If self-work is too much for you to handle right now, and you don’t know where to begin, I’d suggest seeing a therapist. It is completely normal to seek guidance when you feel lost and even at the bottom. I was at a similar place a couple of months ago: no self esteem, fragile relationships etc. I felt I was at the bottom. It was really tragic, I would feel so unwanted and broken inside that I would wake up crying. After much thought and fear, I finally made an appointment and saw a therapist. It is a regular thing for me now. It has helped me a lot to not feel like my whole existence is full of shame and that I deserve nothing but hatred. I’m still healing and getting better but I know that without a person by my side, who is qualified exactly for that, for guiding people through healing, I would still be at the bottom. Please please remember that you’re not permanently broken. There is a silver lining and people there to help you reach that. I’m sending you all the love ❤️

    Thank you so much for these videos Dr. Marks, you are the best! 👏🏼 would love to see more videos on insomnia, I only get a few (3 or so) hours of sleep a night usually & that’s taking the max trazadone. I don’t know what else to do! I wear blue light glasses 2 hours before bed too as I’ve seen you recommend doing

    Thanks so much for assisting people with your knowledge. You explain things so well and these aspects of personality are things we really need to know. With the knowledge you present on your channel, especially as you are a psychiatrist, you are helping to make the world a better place. ❤️❤️❤️

    I am very grateful for your viewpoint it is refreshingly no nonsense, non-judgmental and with no glimmer of superiority, which is rare in the field, sadly, I think it is counterproductive to a person's ability to accept themselves, heal and grow. It is a condition, not a condemnation, when you explore and explain. No sign of psyche-bashing.
    There is a need for the insightful exploration of comparative conditions and I have been in tears of recognition and relief. I cannot tell you the release and release you bring, I have struggled my whole life, my life now depends on implementing healthy changes, especially psychologically- the precipitation of the life limiting conditions I have- Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, neurological injury and clotting disorders.
    Thank you 🙏
    I don't know if it is because I am in the uk but when you point to video links "here and here", I don't have the thumbnails to click.
    Positively it means I have to look them up and that has led to me finding other treasures.

    This explains difficult people and the experiences that one can expect pursuant to their underdeveloped selves.

    Hi Dr Tracey Marks, I love your content and all that you're doing for the mental health community! I was wondering if you could do a video on Long-Acting Injections (antipsychotics). I'm currently speaking with my psychiatrist about switching from oral to injections, and I don't know much about them.
