- This year's advert features Moz, a huge, snoring under-the-bed monster with puppy dog eyes. The director behind Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Michel Gondry, was called in to make the two-minute ad. Aside from working with middle England’s favourite shop he is known for his video collaborations with artists including Radiohead, Björk and Daftpunk. The soundtrack to the advert is a classic Beatles song, Golden Slumbers from the 1969 Abbey Road album, re-recorded by rock band Elbow.

I was in intensive care recovering from an operation for Ovarian cancer and my partner was traveling back to the hospital to see me when this came on the radio ....he was at the traffic lights by the hospital and sat and cried....on the day I came out of hospital and he was taking me home still poorly...this came on the radio again we both cried...it is our song now ...I listen to it when I’m having a bad day 💖💕💖

It’s not Christmas but I’m just here in summer re watching this advert a few times after a while and I’ve seen it a few times from when it first came out but it’s still just a lovely advert to watch
It’s like one of those peaceful adverts that can put someone to sleep it’s so relaxing and lovely.
Moz is knocked out, threat will no longer harm, Kid will now be escorted to interrogation room, we need all the info we can get to know what type of horrendous acts Moz was committing.
Its been 7 Years.

Lovely commercial, thank you John Lewis for breaking the ice about us aliens, next time use our song Zone 3/2.0! The little boy was soo cute, the alien looked familiar, maybe my distant cousin perhaps, peace from a real alien Terra Momma from the band United Funk Order.

Shame the moz monsters in JL looked nothing like him but at least I wasn't tempted to buy one I guess.
Nice little story - but I don't get the central message...Lose a Friend This Christmas? Friendship damages your sleep so you'd better let them give you a gift and disappear? It's so much more easy to sleep when your friend abandons you? Keep secret friends in your bedroom and allow them to damage your health? Don't tell your parents about night time alliances (child protection issue with that interpretation)? It smacks of a campaign that has lost its way and run out of ideas - and a creative team that has lost the client and pursued their own indulgence. The twist at the end is frankly bizarre, and christmas is squeezed in as an afterthought. John Lewis you need to rein in your advertising agency - this has let you down rather badly.
I think it's more like 'don't be afraid to make friends with people/things that look different' and then 'if you care about your friends look after them.' - the twist at the end is that when he turns the nightlight off he can see Moz, when he has it on, he can't. So he chooses when he wants to sleep, and when he wants to play. Moz is looking after his friend by letting him sleep.
Still not as good as a dog bouncing on a trampoline though.
Mac Andrews the boy is not losing a friend:) with that lamp he is able to see the monster whenever he wants instead of seeing him every night and not getting enough of sleep:)
Sacrifice your fun for the good of the people you love
The monster wasn't real. It was just something that kept him up at night, so he was given the star light thing to help relax him and sleep. Every kid that age gets up several times at night for various reasons, and getting back to sleep is sometimes difficult.
at the end he turns the light off and you can hear the monster's voice :)
