Yeah it's easy to see why this short failed to catch on technical wise. At least it's in the public domain now so maybe someone can finally redo the short sound wise.

A 1950s TV broadcast version re-did the music with standard 1950s stock music, like in broadcasts of the silent Fables shorts. It can be found in the CZcams seatch query of this short.

The success of DINNERTIME was not quite the issue. There were two. The first was that RKO was being formed and their collection of theaters were having sound equipment installed at the time that this cartoon was being previewed on Broadway. It was shown to Disney as a demonstration. His reaction as stated in his telegram to Roy was that "It was the rottenest Fable I've ever seen, and I've seen them all. Just a lot of racket." The unimaginative use of inconsistent levels of the sound effects, many too loud were a problem.
The other issue as to why Disney succeeded was not just a better use of music and sound effects, but the fact that as an independent producer, he was able to get STEAMBOAT WILLIE into theaters clamoring for sound films because he was not obligated to a contract with a film company as was Terry. So his release was not held back because the parent company was not ready to show sound films. Any theater with the equipment was ready to take what Disney had. That created the impression that he made the first sound cartoon. It was all a surface impression, not the actual truth.

Well, plus the sound synchronization was just bad in this. Half the sound effects are a second or two after the events they’re supposed to go with. It’s possible that every CZcams translation I’ve seen is just similarly off, but I doubt it. Steamboat Willie was thus arguably fully synchronized, and this wasn’t.
That said, the winners write the history books.

@@thelfoley Heck, there is a 1950s version of Dinner Time that used different, stock music (like they did to the other silent Fables shorts), so even 1950s TV executives thought the original music is unwatchable.
Plus, Dinner Time re-used animation from earlier, silent shorts, that were not made for sound.
Plus, the opening is irrelevant to the rest of the story.

And at the time, Walt Disney was a big fan of the Terry Fables, too. That makes his reaction to this all the more notable.

@@Marbles471 He was a fan, but I cannot the primary source on not liking Dinner Time. I found a 1950s TV broadcast version of Dinner Time, in which the soundtrack was replaced with 1950s stock music used in TV broadcasts of the silent Fables. Even 1950s TV executives thought that the original soundtrack is unlistenable.

I do find this short entertaining. But I can see why Steamboat Willie made an impact while this didn't. Sound in this seems much more perfunctory, more of an afterthought. Its use of music and audio isn't particularly imaginative. But even the "afterthought" aspect speaks better to Walt Disney's overall superior inventiveness ---- Plane Crazy and Gallopin' Gaucho (the first and second Mickey Mouse films to be created) come across as making much more effective and entertaining use of sound than this does, even though in their cases sound really WAS an afterthought, as they were originally made as silents and only had sound added after Steamboat Willie was a big hit.

The success of Disney' s animation is the way he used music in his film

  • @robertprochko6331

The overall fidelity of the Photophone system is considerably better than that of the primitive Cinephone system used by Disney, but Disney had a five or six piece orchestra to play for the synchronization along with the film. Terry simply used Victor Pic-Tur-Music discs and then added synchronized sound effects, which are poorly done and obtrusive. If the musical accompniment were slightly higher and the effects somewhat lower I think that this short would have been more successful

is not just a technology issue, Disney has been able to use music in its films better than anyone else. I believe that it is the music that is the real essence of Disney films

@iconaus Walter Lantz and the Fleischer brothers both fully realized the potential of sound by 1929. In this Terry sadly lagged.
