To be honest, the laser is the last thing that needs replacing. 99% of the time it’s something different, like bad caps or the spindelmotor or mechanism needs attention.
Also dust on the mirrors gives reading problems (in the laser unit) and needs some cleaning.
The laser works or works not.

I have a Sony CDP-690 with exactly the same problem - the slightest tap or even walking across the room causes it to skip. And here is the thing - it is not the optical laser pickup unit, since I replaced it for a new one as this machine uses a KSS-210A which is still in production and relatively cheap. Made absolutely no difference, the machine is mega quick at reading both standard CD's and CDR's but this 'sensitivity' problem remains. I have cleaned it thoroughly, greased the cogs, the metal rail etc. - no change. Kind of running out of ideas what the problem could be.

Just because the caps are not bulging does not mean they are not leaky. I recapped a vincent cd player that was behaving similarly and it plays like new and completely trouble free after the new caps had about 100 hrs of time on them. Weird, but true. Good luck

Before doing anything fancy, check the lens.
Got the ‘No disc’ message on my good old Sony CD player,
Unplugged the main power, all audio cables, unscrewed the hood, then applied a q-tip with windex on the laser lens. This fixed it, unexpectedly I must say!

The kss150 has a second lens which needs to be cleaned. After that the output will restore to former glory.
The kss 210 replacement is junk, it doesn't have the second lens, which on the 150 protects the prisma inside from dirt.

I just bought a SONY CDP-CE 375 multidisk player for 20 euros, it was broken, I repaired it by spending 2 euros and 50 cents on a bag of elastic bands that took the place of the faulty belts, and it was like new again.

Well that just ruined my day :( My newer CD player (RCA brand) just stopped reading CDs correctly, it will play about the first 3 tracks okay then hangs up. I have an old Sony CDP-CE275, must be at least 20 years old, and it won't play correctly. I think I will still take them apart and investigate. Considering that new music quality CD players start in the $400 to $500 range, I was hoping to get one of the old ones fixed. I remember the day when you could get a decent music quality CD player for not much more than $100, I am surprised at how expensive they are now.

There is nothing wrong with the laser. Just need to adjust the variable capacitors with a plastic pen cap like I did. Works like new now. Put in a cd and rotate the capacitor to one side till the cd makes funny noises and mark the spot. Rotate the other way till it makes funny noises or stops and mark the spot. Leave it half way between the two marks. Repeat for the other capacitors. It will run like new now!

Man, I've got half a dozen players with various faults (laser, mechanics, ???) and now you reminding me that there are no more spare parts available, made me do a quick research on how much a brand new one costs nowadays (from a reputable brand). Well, where I live the cheapest one is a no frills Pioneer for €249!!! Think I will go with second hand ones till they're all dead and later resort to a few discmans I still got 🙄

The KSS-150A was made obsolete buy the KSS-210A and the KSS-210A has new generic stock from china the differentce between the generic and original is the bushing are plastic and not brass buy they are the proper replacement imo and should be plug abd play without needing an alignment.

@@jamieblatantsparky For now I have no complaints from my customers, and I received my laser yesterday from ASWO as well for CDP-M48 which I use it here. So, I'll install it and calibrate it, ane be the judge myself ;).
When it comes to the capacitors, yes, electrolytic capacitors when lying too long can sometimes not deliver if kept for too long on the shelf, but I haven't seen a problem with a laser yet.
Maybe I need to fix more than a few though to see what you see ;).
