    Here's like 5 games where the opponent did next to nothing for the first three turns... why are all my games against mono-red / mono-white where the opponent's hand is empty by turn three and I'm at 4 hp?

      I too never have this kind off slow play opponent streak. It would have been all aggro with maybe 1 slow play or just better Ugin decks.

    • @ivancarabano
      @ivancarabano Před 4 lety

      Yeah, the deck is pretty bad. In SILVER ranked I have 14 wins / 20 loses, in free play 6 wins/ 9 loses. As you have said the deck is slow, and against any fast aggro deck you must draw perfect (and cross fingers), but against control decks is not any better ........ doesn't have any kind of protections agains counters, Teferi destroys it (turn 3 Teferi bounces your mana artifact), Narset shuts it down ..... Honestly it's a very bad deck.

      It is pretty clear that Arena has some kind of algorithm in matchmaking, I may have a deck that is weak against dimir counterspell/mill decks, so I make some changes (since all the games I'm getting are nothing but counterspells decks), and suddenly I'm playing against some simic bs... and if I change decks, totally different matches.
      MTG Arena for me is winning 5 or 6 six times in a row (against decks that didn't had a chance to begin with) and then loosing 4 or 5 times in row (against people that were one step ahead everytime). My advice is, if you're tired of playing against RDW, play some lifegain stuff that they are weak against.

    Love that you made a competitive (ish) deck in mono U without using any countermagic. That’ll probably stop it from getting to mythic but it’s so good to see blue go big without slowing the game down to a grind

      what’s wrong with countermagic? it punishes players for playing without thinking first and it adds this poker like bluffing to the game so that you have to think about psychology as well as your play.

    • @macaronipanda9516
      @macaronipanda9516 Před 4 lety +4

      @@knodalishell5636 they're boring to play against. Oh, not that card...or that card...or that card...and another.
      Often I see the opposite, where the counter speller doesn't think and just counters something that allows me to play my permanent. Then they concede because they can't deal with the board state. So, I've had zero fun playing my deck and when Im about to, they concede. Utter waste of time, though effective against certain playstyles and decks. Which is why I run T3feri so I can imagine them ranting about how unfair the card is while I laugh.

    • @somecallmejorge2462
      @somecallmejorge2462 Před 4 lety +1

      @@knodalishell5636 poker is not a good analogy to counters in mtg, and no it doesn't "force your opponent to think before playing." Principles of game theory stratify games based on the amount of information each player is given (i.e. games of complete or incomplete information that exist on a spectrum). The person playing countermagic gets handed much before having to choose to counter: complete information concerning every card their opponent plays at the time they play it, the amount and colors of mana their opponents are using for their spells (and as a result potentially future spells), the knowledge of whether a counterspell will work in reaction i.e. "Can't be countered" status. Thus, they are free to choose which spells they do or don't counter with very little risk involved. The choice is nearly always allocated to the spell with the most utility for the opponent. For instance, choosing not to counter a 2 mana cost card when they can clearly see the opponent has 3 mana left open to potentially spend. A better analogy would be blackjack, where one already has information concerning the dealers hand and their mandated choices before one decides what to do. The math is not speculative based on "implied odds" of hand ranges and betting sizes the way poker is.
      Another principle involved in mtg is the rule of relative value. While not always true depending on deck construction, in practice, a card costing more mana will hold more utility than a card costing less. Thus, the amount of utility counter spells hold for only being in the 2-4 mana cost range increases with the higher mana cost of the card they're countering.
      Exceptions to this include instances where both players are running significant amounts of counter and/or instant spells and instances where the leading player is running significant amounts of cheap (i.e. 1 drop) spells. Even then, the amount of information the countering player has far outweighs the amount the leading player has before spells are cast and always will.
      Given this information, it isn't difficult to see why countermagic is so polarizing of a topic among the mtg community (or why 3-mana Teferi is arguably the most valuable planeswalker to have in a deck).

    I get Chromatic Lantern allows you to use whatever activated abilities your opponent's creatures have that you've taken with Mass Manipulation but I think Mana Geode's scry is going to be more value more often. Palladium Myr is a creature for 3 that taps for two colourless mana, it being a creature means it's vulnerable to creature removal and can't tap on the turn you play it but that's also an idea. Even Spinning Wheel with it's overcosted ability will probably be useful more often.

    I made my own tweaks to this deck and this is my version of it:

    4 Ugin, the Ineffable (WAR) 2
    2 Blast Zone (WAR) 244
    Sideboard
    1 Keruga, the Macrosage (IKO) 225
    Mystic sanctuary literally only works on mass manipulation and it also slows you down a lot, so I took out 2.
    Blast zone can help against mono red and cat ovens, and just annoying stuff in general. (with little drawback).
    I don't have 4 Barrin's or Solemn Simulacrum, so I put in 4 Ugins instead. Which worked out really well. You get discounts on most cards, can make tokens, draw cards, and kill things. It's really good.
    Palladium Myr can attack and is also a 2 mana ramp for 3, which also isn't killed by Ugin.
    Spinning wheel and mana geode are strictly better than the artifacts he chose.
    It worked out pretty damn well.

    I feel the Chromatic Lanterns should be some combination of Mana Geodes or Spinning Wheels, both having purpose. The Lantern really doesn't do anything extra where you get some value from those other two. Also, easier on the wildcards for anyone who doesn't have 4x of them (not many by this point, I know.) Your choices of artifact ramp are not ideal.
    You should take out the devotion one and the chromatic lantern and put in something like Mana Geode (for scry) and either a locket (for card draw when not needed), or a spinning wheel so you can tap down big threats if needed. Those artifacts you have don't do anything useful for the same cost and effect).
    Also, I personally really like 6 mana Ugin and would want him in that deck.
    He discounts all the mana ramp artifacts by 2 (and you have like 12 of them), makes tokens to attack with, gives you more card draw, and he even discounts the other Ugin.
    He also isn't killed by 8 mana Ugin's AOE. Nor are the tokens (I think).
    Seems like a no-brainer.

    Minor deck critique/question: would it be correct to play other things instead of Lantern and Altar? They have upsides in specific instances where you steal Heliod against Mono white or, in the case of Lantern, you steal something with a non-blue activated ability, but they don't do much in any other case. I would highly suggest playing Midnight Clock, Simic Locket, and/or Zagoth Crystal over those. Midnight Clock has the benefit of triggering Gadwick and being a super late game draw seven while Simic Locket and Zagoth Crystal have two different forms of card draw attached to them while tapping for blue for the deck and Green for activating Scavenging Ooze/Jolrael if it's stolen. Locket is better in the sense it can be cashed in even if you cast it earlier to ramp, but Crystal has the benefit of cycling if you get overloaded with ramp effects, gives you something to do on two mana by cycling it, and it taps for black to activate Knight of the Ebon Legion if you steal one (super niche, but it's more common than Heliod or red activation costs in this meta). My gut tells me something like 4 Zagoth Crystal, 2 Midnight Clock, 2 Simic Locket might be correct.

If it bothers so much, just play 4 Zagoth, 4 Locket, since both have upsides that are likely to come up compared to the ones currently in use which only have utility based on things you steal (Gods/Demigods and non-blue activated abilities respectively).

    You could be extra greedy and go for a blue devotion shell with corridor monitor, nyx lotus and arcanist's owl, the mass manipulations get silly really fast.

    This deck is super fun to play but in unranked it's a MAGNET for red since red doesn't care about manipulation and you're dead before you can ramp to 8. 6/10 of my games played were red.

    20:50 Ugin doesn't always mean victory, I had some guy doing a Sultai Ramp Ugin deck and he minus 6 his Ugin to get rid of my board, so the next turn I used Mythos of Illuna to copy his Ugin and then plus two'd it to kill his original. He spent a quite a few turns trying to get rid of it (he eventually did) but the poor sap ended up ramping himself into an empty library and decking himself. Ya hate to see it. (¬‿¬ )

    • @BlobfishBandit
      @BlobfishBandit Před 4 lety +1

      so wouldnt that still be an Ugin victory? seeing as you gained your own Ugin that pushed you to victory lol... so indeed Ugin DOES always mean victory, just not always to the one who gets him first

    'Matador': literally, translates as killer. More often, how you call bullfighters. They do after all kill the bulls. BUT. 'Porco' is not spanish. Sounds italian or portuguese or something very similar, tough.
