    Jeep re-designed and debuted a new Compass midway through the 2017 model year, and that vehicle returns with almost no changes for 2018. The expanded Compass lineup now ranges from the rugged, off-road-ready Trailhawk to the plush and well-mannered Limited. Falling size-wise between the typical subcompact and compact crossover, the new Compass combines the city-friendly size and wallet-friendly price of a subcompact with the cabin and cargo room of a compact and, at least in Trailhawk form, the ability to handle much tougher roads and terrain than competitors.
    All Compasses use a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder that makes 180 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque, but it’s available with front- or 4-wheel drive, and the lineup includes 3 transmissions, a 6-speed manual, a 6-speed automatic, and a 9-speed automatic featured in all 4WD versions. The cabin is comfortable and roomy, and FCA’s Uconnect infotainment system consistently gets strong reviews and supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
    With so many competing small SUVs, the 2018 Jeep Compass stands out by offering plenty of versatility and the ability to venture where few other compact crossovers dare.
    The Jeep Compass is technically listed as a compact SUV, but it costs less than any other vehicle in the segment. In fact, in terms of pricing and other statistics, the Compass is actually positioned between compact SUVs and subcompact SUVs-two red-hot vehicle segments with plenty of stiff competition. So what does the Compass offer that helps it stand out amongst all these vehicles?
    The 2018 model year marks the sophomore year of the second generation of the Jeep Compass. It replaces an outgoing vehicle that more or less limped on for a decade. The first-generation Compass was born out of dismal years at Chrysler. In fact, that original Compass was actually based on the Dodge Caliber chassis-and represents a time both Jeep and Dodge would probably like everyone to forget.

    I just bought one. I drove an Escape (and I am a Ford guy), a RAV4, an Equinox and the Compass. The Compass in my opinion was better in every aspect except power in which the escape won. But, that being said, interior quality and ride quality were best on the Compass imho. 5 different 4 wheel drive options are a nice feature as well. All cars I drove were around the 30K mark. The redesign is quite nice.

As for the Latitiude .....it does not make sense because with the options it needs to be nice , it will cost about the same as the Limited which offers some nice exterior trim chrome, cold weather features and a leather interior with the 8 inch U Connect display . The first 2 choices I was given are 2018 Jeep Compass Trailhawk and 2020 Jeep Cherokee Sport. May I have your opinion over those 2 models? And what other cars you suggest for rough roads? My car budget is for something around 25-30 cad. Thank you!!

  • @LarryGanz
    @LarryGanz Před 5 lety +4

    I have to say, I like the 2018 Compass and I'm a Subaru fanatic. We had an extended test drive in a fully loaded used 2018 Compass Lattitude with 14K miles while our daughter's 2011 Compass had a wheel speed sensor replaced (the only part failure other than a TPMS sensor in the 4 years we've owned it). We liked it enough that we're considering buying it to replace the 7 year old 74K mile Compass, and the current car has no issues now. The acceleration is much better than our older CVT model, and seems acceptable considering that I have a couple of turbocharged Subarus. And it's also much quieter, smoother, and less frenzied sounding during acceleration.

    • @afcgeo882
      @afcgeo882 Před 5 lety

      The current Compass has an ongoing AWD issue they haven't addressed: the PTU seems to not disconnect the rear driveshaft above its intended speed, creating serious damage overtime and an unsettling hum. You really shouldn't ever compare old models and new models. It's not a sensible way of comparing things. Go drive a current 2019 model Crosstrek, Honda CH-R, and Nissan Rogue Sport to compare.

    - How well does it handle pot holes in a city (Suspensions, quick turns to avoid it, etc.)?
    - How well does it handle in city streets filled with snow, tarmac and slush?

      I own a Latitude with the Manual transmission.. the suspension is firm and feels like a European car. Very good handling for on road and very nimble. The snow setting is excellent, and as long as it isn;t too deep you'll be fine. I've had mine in snow a bunch of times this past winter. Cabin noise is very quiet. Surprisingly quiet. But overall, I would recommend avoiding the Compass. It has a lot of problems and mine is in the shop almost every month with issues. And the 2.4 has big oil issues, they recommend checking the oil every 2500 miles and adding. Brand new, these engines consume up to 1-2 quarts of oil from the factory between oil changes. These are not well-made cars.

    • @kurtratzlaff8732
      @kurtratzlaff8732 Před 6 lety +2

      The factory tires are a joke, but that's to be expected. What isn't expected is when the service adviser explained to me these 2.4 valves leak and burn oil very commonly. Check your oil every 2500 miles. Oil consumption is very common in these engines even new from the factory. That, to me, is unacceptable build quality.

      Now why are you comparing two different car classes? The Cherokee is in the same class as the Terrain and CX-5. No Jeep except the Grand Cherokee and Wranger has a good resale value. Too many reliability issues in the past 10 years. Your car may be 100% fine, but the perception has been deteriorated in the last 10 years, hence the resale value. The Renegade, Compass and Cherokee are for leasing, not buying, if you need a brand new car. Otherwise, buy a used one and avoid 2015 models (major transmission issues on the Cherokee).

    Guys I need your advice
    I am interested in the new Jeep Compass. It costs around $25,000/- where I live. The compass is a fun drive. Only problem is the slow engine, which I don t mind.
    However, I also found a used 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee for almost the same price and has 30,000 KM on it. I love the grand cherokee. It has a lot of space and engine is great. To be honest, I don t need that much power in the engine but I love it. My only problem is that it is used and not safe. The new compass is rated "Top Safety Pick" by the IIHS.
    I will be getting married soon. I feel like i will be needing extra room for the baby stroller and other shoppings/groceries. The compass does not provide that room. I have a 2014 jeep compass and I understand.
    What do you guys think?

    • @afcgeo882
      @afcgeo882 Před 5 lety +4

      Not safe? How is it not safe? The GC is perfectly safe. It may not be IIHS "Top Pick", but it's still very safe. The NHTSA rated it 5 stars. The don't even compare the two classes against each other and have odd tests that have always been called out by owners, manufacturers and the government. For example, to get the "IIHS Top Pick", a car must have automatic braking (front crash prevention). Your Compass trim may not even have that feature, so it wouldn't actually make "Top Pick" anyway. The GC is taller, so the center of gravity is higher, so you can't drive like a maniac or you'll flip over. That's the case with any tall vehicle. It has all the crumple zones and air bags a car can handle. The IIHS rated it "Marginal" and "Poor" on its controversial "Small Overlap Front" test, even though it then commented that the likelihood of serious injury of those passengers is low. The Small Overlap tests primarily the A pillar and the area below it, and is an unlikely type of a collision. Even the 2018 Toyota Rav-4 performed "Poor" on that test. The Grand Cherokee has the latest (for 2017) active safety gadgets. It also has a very reliable RWD system, a reliable engine and a resale value you'll NEVER get on a Compass. If you think you'll have a baby soon, you'll really appreciate the rear seat space for the rear-facing child seat. The Compass doesn't really have enough space back there for the front passenger to still sit comfortably. I would definitely go with the used GC.

      @@kevin12697 neither one. Unfortunately, given the tight squeeze of Jeep's models in the lineup, it's highly unlikely the Compass will receive any new engine. It's more likely it will receive slight upgrades to the current engine and the transmission for the facelift in 2020 or 2021. The Fiat 1.4 Turbo is a terrible engine. It produces less horsepower than the current offering, requires premium fuel and is very unreliable. The 2.0 Turbo is simply too powerful and too expensive. If it was added to the Compass, it would increase the Compass sales by A LOT, but most of those would come at the expense of Cherokee sales. The two cars are very similar in size and the Compass actually has a slightly larger trunk than the Cherokee. The only thing the Cherokee has going for it right now is the engine choice.

    The issue is that the vehicle is priced like the Compact CUV segment, making it a poor choice for any category. Hence the majority of these ending up in rental car fleets across North America and not in people's driveways.

  • @michaelcharnley-heaton4063

    Don’t buy the 1.4 petrol version. The engine is just too small for such a heavy car and it really struggles. The automatic gearbox is terrible too and is very slow to change up the gears and as a result the engine is constantly over-revving and only achieves 28mpg.

      George L I traded it in for the Alfa Romeo Stelvio 2.0 Turbo which has 280 bhp. It’s so much better even though I’m only getting 25mpg. Fiat need to get this engine in the Jeep Compass ASAP and ditch the underpowered 1.4

      Michael Charnley-Heaton and how much was the Alpha? The 2.0 will NEVER happen. The Compass is a budget sub-compact crossover. The Stelvio is a luxury high-performance crossover that competes against the Audi Q5 and BMW X3.

      @@michaelcharnley-heaton4063 Oh wow... the Compass is MUCH cheaper in the States and the Stelvio is a bit more expensive. The Compass, with the manual transmission, FWD starts at $21,845 and the very top trim (High Altitude) AWD, 2.4 petrol, with every imaginable option, including panoramic sunroof, sat nav and all safety gadgets and an electric boot door tops out at $34,860, but you can likely get up to $5,000 off at the dealer. The Alfa starts at $42,590 for a RWD with only a choice of white or red colours and that's it. So for similarly equipped cars, I could pay $30k for the Jeep or about $48k for the Alfa. As such, they're not actually comparable here, at all.

      The engine itself seems good and reliable, but the car is entirely too heavy for it. I don't understand the need for a Compass anyway. Should have just paid proper attention to the Renegade and Cherokee. The Renegade is too small for most Americans and is too boxy to get decent fuel economy on the highway, while the Cherokee is simply too heavy and has too little trunk space (even less than the Compass!) Jeep should restyle the next Cherokee to look like the next Grand Cherokee, delete the V6 and tune the 2.4 engine to produce slightly more torque, while changing out the transmission for a ZF-8. Then they need to make the Renegade a little less boxy and delete the Compass.

      The Trailhawk comes with all-terrain tires and is the only trim in the range to get the "Trail Rated" certification from Jeep. Specifically, Jeep calls them All-Season On/Off Road Tires. You can get Goodyear Wrangler SR-As, Falken Wildpeak A/T3W, Lexani LHHT-206, and Lionhart Lion Claw HT in your size. That's just off of Tirerack.com There may be additional options. Avoid the Jeep Compass! The manual transmission is a joke it is horrible! The vehicle is just awful off road clearly never meant to leave the pavement. The 2.4 is painstakingly slow (i clocked a 9.1 second 0-60). My first Jeep and very likely my last. I would not recommend this car.

    • @Andsleeter
      @Andsleeter Před 6 lety +3

      Kurt Ratzlaff "The 2.4 is painstakingly slow".... You ought to know that before you bought. Why did you still buy it? It has better off-road manners than RAV-4, CRV or even Outback, so what more do you want for under 40K?

    • @kurtratzlaff8732
      @kurtratzlaff8732 Před 6 lety

      Some more articulation in the suspension, a 1st gear low enough to pull the car forward when it digs in the sand a little (or a 2-speed transfer case) or some more low-end torque from a massive 2.4L engine. I got stuck in sand and with 4,500 RPM clutch rides, I couldn't spin my tires enough to pull my Jeep out and had to get towed out...(engine dies) there are no tow hooks on the front (can't get the off-road bumper with the manual transmission and the on-road bumper does not offer slots for tow hooks) and Jeep supplies a tow port but the tow eye is sold separately apparently. also, I live in the Hollywood hills (california), there are steep roads near my house i don't drive up since 1st gear is too tall and if I have to stop and let a car pass (narrow roads) I can't get going again without destroying the clutch. Towing a trailer is also a joke; good luck pulling your boat up a launch ramp and having a clutch at the top. 1ST GEAR IS TOO TALL. I also own a 1999 2-door GMC Jimmy 4x4 with 5-spd manual. Original MSRP was just under 20,000.. adjust for inflation, we're talking $28,000. That's $2,000 cheaper then this Compass. My GMC Jimmy, with a shorter wheelbase (100.5 vs 103.8) can do everything I just listed. it came with low-range, tow-hooks, up to 5,000 pounds towing capacity, lots of articulation, lots of low-end torque, rear seats that fold flat enough I can sleep comfortably when camping, but it's old, rusty, and needs to be replaced. I don't want a huge truck. 4runners are huge, Tahoes are too big, the Explorer exploded in size over the years. All I want is a small truck with a decent 4x4 capability and is excellent for towing, but also has reasonable on-road manners (not interested in a wrangler, dont care if it corners like an M3; somewhere in the middle please). I thought Jeep offered that in the Compass. I was wrong. The Compass is terrible.

      You know not everyone wants to go off road lol. Just because you want a jeep doesn't mean you have to want that. I love the look of the grand Cherokee but don't need that huge vehicle so the compass is a perfect choice for me. Js

    • @kurtratzlaff8732
      @kurtratzlaff8732 Před 5 lety +1

      Jeep offers the vehicle in 4x4, and that's what I bought: a 4x4 vehicle. Such a vehicle is expected to be reasonably capable off-road. if it said AWD (all wheel drive) on the back like many of the competitors in this segment, I would not expect off-road capability. But it says 4x4, not AWD. If you personally don't take it off road, that's fine, that's what the 2x4 model is for. But I do take mine off-road, which is why i got the 4x4. I also did not want a large vehicle, the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee were too big for me as well, but why should I have to sacrifice off-road ability just because I'm buying a smaller vehicle? Why can't I expect the Compass to have similar off-road ability as the Grand Cherokee..? (it should actually do better since it's smaller, but in fact it is less-capable off road) and that is why i tell people to stay away from the Compass. It's not designed to go off-road, it's designed to be pretty. And I didn't want a pretty car, I wanted a small, fuel-efficient SUV that has reasonable on and off-road manners, not as utilitarian as a Wrangler, and not as posh as a Range Rover. The Compass was promising, but ultimately a failure. Thus, I tell people to stay away from it and buy something else. (and if anyone from Jeep is reading this, bring back something similar to the 2-door XJ, that's what I want *cough* 2020 Bronco *cough*)

      @afcgeo882 Před 5 lety

      What's horrible about the manual transmission? It isn't an off-road car. The 2.4's speed is pretty standard for the class of car.

      @afcgeo882 Před 5 lety

      I hate to say it, but I agree with you. Although the Compass is a perfectly good vehicle and is designed well to compete against other sub-compacts, it seems to kill Renegade and Cherokee sales. If they were to get rid of either, the Compass should stay, but otherwise... they should just improve on the Renegade (make it a bit more sleek and fuel-efficient) and Cherokee (tune the 2.4 for better torque, replace the ZF-9 with ZF-8 and phase out the V6, create more trunk space and a more GC look).
