2017 Jeep Compass First Drive Review With Off Road - In 4K UHD!

- For 2017 Jeep is replacing the long-suffering Compass and Patriot with an all-new and considerably more capable model dubbed "Compass" around the world. (In 2017 the "new Compass" will be sold at the same time as the 2017 old Compass, 2018 will be a full model year for the new Compass.) The new model sits between the sub-compact Renegade and the compact Cherokee. In a way that makes the Compass a competitor to the RAV4, CR-V, Equinox, and Escape as well as the CH-R, HR-V, Trax and Juke.
As with the Renegade and Cherokee, the Compass gets the latest transverse mounted AWD system from the Jeep parts bin featuring a true center locking coupling and software designed for off-roading. Combined with the only skid plates in the segment and 19-inches of water fording ability, it'r pretty easy to say that the Compass is the most capable SUV/CUV this size.

This is a geniunely good looking vehicle.
Jeep did this right.
Are you blind, Range Rover Evoke has a better face.
Bryan Dalton Evoque?! Puleaze!
Bryan Dalton ...that also cost about $70,000.
Mihaly Lukacs I completely agree with you not sure if I'm comfortable with top end trims only coming equipped with projector headlights; seems a bit out of scale.
My biggest issue is the 2.4L seems a bit underpowered. Wish it had the Pentastar on the higher trims, it would definitely justify the price more.
Really good review!! Jeep did a great job with this new Compass!
Is it weird i just bought a trailhawk compass and im still watching review videos. Im really liking it so far.
Your reviews are insane are you serious, walking by the car as it crawls WOW your the best keep it up
I could do the same with my 53 willy's jeep.
Thanks for this review. The Compass is on our short list.
I am legitimately impressed. Great packaging, capability, utility, and features.
Great Review Alex. Fantastic off road demo.
This is the review to watch. Good job.
A very unbiased review. Very good.
Really love the look of this car! I would've bought this one if it sold earlier!!
Excellent thorough review.
Excellent review. I enjoyed watching it.
Great review as always !! Thank you
The new Compass has an attractive look, a worthy competitor to the Nissan Rogue Sport a.k.a. Quashqai
You really are the best auto reviewer
Great review..really good job!
great review and you speak well. good job

Alex looking back and forth at the camera whilst and after saying that like
"I know you shouldn't drive that fast, but I know you will"
Very well done review!
Another great video. I can't believe Alex doesn't have many many more Subscribers.
You make. The best videos
Great job on the review......all bases covered and no mistakes ....impressive. Love that red Limited Compass....looks better than any of it competitors . Now if only they would give it about 30 more horsepower .
Jeep did this one right, Awesome looking Jeep. This will be my next lease.
Alex, your videos are by far the best car reviews on CZcams. You know exactly what to talk about without any nonsense. I find myself watching your reviews of cars I would never even consider owning. Quick question about the Compass: do you, or anyone else know if the Trailhawk model will be available with the 6-speed manual, or is the 9-speed auto only? The lower trims with AWD and the 6-spd aren't a deal-breaker, but I wouldn't mind the Trailhawk if I was already buying one.
WOW that's what I call a car review. Thank you
Jeep did this one right.
contractki11er Then again, after having to go on a roadtrip in the old model, I'm sure anything sounds good.
Budget Grand Cherokee.
As always, excellent, detailed review. Any idea of when you'll get to test a 4x4 manual, Alex?
really nice vidoe
No matter how bad a product JEEP puts out people still love them....
Chad Singleton That's not true. At least for me. The thing is that i love Jeeps but i hated the first generation Jeep Compass. So many flaws but the main flaw IMO is the seats in that car. They gave me a back sore.
Any rumors on a diesel model? Please review the new CX-5 diesel as soon as it becomes available. I'm very much looking forward to your opinion on that one.
This looks better than the Renegade and Cherokee in my opinion. I just don't understand why they will upgrade this tigershark engine. It needs at least have DI to bring up the power output. Also, FCA continues to have overly heavy vehicles that take a toll on acceleration and fuel economy.
I think think this would be a very good option for North American(Canadian) shoppers looking to have a good AWD worthy vehicle.
Please review 2020 model
Please review jeep Compass 2.0 diesel 9-Speed automatic
Good luck reselling it. Can you do a review on the latest Mini Cooper or Clubman?
how about the maintenance cost of this compass compare to mazda cx3 and toyota rav4
Looks like they got Alex over to Michigan for this report and out of Nor Cal...
As mentioned earlier by someone (Keira), I'm looking forward to you reviewing the new CR-V as well. Is that on your radar to try and get soon?
This looks much better than the previous gen, more like a Range Rover Evoque. Toyota's RAV4 has a fake grille between the headlights too. It must have been nice to be in sunny weather, as opposed to the recent California heavy rains, flooding and mudslides!
@AlexOnAutos
Wow, high praise for the Compass! It is very handsome and the styling goes to show that the JGC's styling has aged extremely well since 2011, given that it still makes this new entry fresh and modern. As is the case with the Pacifica, glad to see ZF/FCA finally sort the tuning and smoothness of the 9HP.
My only hope is that we see a detuned(or not!) 2.0T Hurricane show up in this thing for 2018. The 2.4L Tigershark is long past it's expiration date and if it weren't for the 9HP, my fear is that this thing would be a gas hog for it's size. The interior definitely looks price/class appropiate and Jeep didn't forget about the cargo area, as it appears they did for the Cherokee.
During driving impressions, did you find the chassis capable of more power? I only ask because I hope to see the 2.0T Hurricane show up in this as it will in Wrangler and Cherokee next year, even if detuned for smaller size duty. And for Pete's Sake...could we please stuff the 2.2L Multijet diesel, if nothing more than to offset the new GM twins and their new 1.6L diesel!?
How come the full review hasn't come out Alex?
this car is more well suited to compete in the sub compact crossover segment because of its size and dimensions
Alex, are you going to do a review on the 6spd manual?
Hey Alex, when are you doing a review on the 2017 Dodge Journey GT ?
I wish you could review the Indian version too.
Also please comment on the payload capacity on 9HP 4x4 compass?
can u post a review for 2017 CRV? thx.
What happens when I get stuck in the snow I have a basic 2016 Jeep Compass
Thank you for awesome review as always. I am waiting for your 2017 Honda CR-V. Are you planning to do the review for that car soon? :)
Too many options...lol thanks 4 breaking it all down Alex
Alex, is adaptive cruise available on the 2017 Compass?
Too bad the 6-speed auto is not available with AWD! I like that trans!
The Cherokee should look like this.
fusion platinum please!
After sitting in the new model, I can safely confirm Jeep has massively improved the seat comfort which was a huge problem for the old model, as well as the interior quality.
hey alex,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,im guessing the jeep Cherokee would have the same traction system with the articulation, as in the video when the other guy was going off road thanks
Whatever happened to the full review?
So much better looking than the old compass. I just dont understand why they are waiting so long to put it out. I just got the compass and it doesnt look anything this. I would have preferred this one.
What type of gas should I use for this Jeep? 87 89 or 93??
I like the styling but I'd like to see a stronger engine with atleast 240 HP
jduke989 looks like you wanna pull trees out of the ground with it... Lol!
Hi really great review ! Quick question : We can see that you are using the car off roads in a really bumpy/mud situation. Do you need the Trailhawk model in order to be able to go through this kind of roads, or do you think that with the latitude model you would be able as well?
Thank you for your video, and I will truly appreciate your response :) .
On the extreme stuff Trailhawk is the way to go out of these two but the Limited 4x4 is fine for most of us.
does apple car play and android auto come in the base model?
Any idea when the New Compass will hit dealerships?
Mid 30's for the tester? For similar money you can have a fully loaded turbocharged compact SUV.
Alex you keep comparing it to sub-compacts even though it not a sub-compact. Jeep stated the Renegade is sub-compact, Compass compact and the Cherokee is mid-size. Jeep even brought the SUV it competes with for you to drive at the press event. The Subaru Crosstrek, Hyundai Tuscon and Kia Sportage are its competitors please compare it to those vehicles.
I know this video is old and all but I am looking at getting a crossover. I drive a Dodge Dart (I hate it and got it when I knew nothing of cars. It has a racing stripe which 16 yo me thought was cool) I’m turning 20 soon and looking at a compass but I wanna know anyone’s thoughts. I’m not trying to off road at all yet since I just don’t have the time tbh. So I know this car isn’t an off-roader but as an all around vehicle what’s a good crossover/suv?
Man......... Why couldn't they offer a V6 option. Would be much more interested.
With anything other than the 9-speed, I would think that engine would be fairly craptastic. But at only $28k for a loaded Trail Hawk, you could get that 9-speed pretty cheap, and the pano sunroof to boot. Not bad. I would think though that the Subaru Crosstrek would be the more liveable vehicle overall, as long as you don't need to tow anything and as long as you can live with a CVT transmission. I don't much like CVT's myself. But a decently equipped Crosstrek will get better gas mileage, will have the Eyesight safety system, and will likely have fewer/lower repair costs. Not as much cargo capacity or off-road capability as the Jeep though. Let's see if the next level up Jeep can match the value of this Jeep for the price.
And, Subaru CVT's dont ever require maintenance. I hated CVT, but I just bought a Mitsubishi Outlander Sport and its great! fast and torquey. Great Value. I got a brand new 2016 on Jan 1st for $7k off MSRP!
bdoleza As far as CVTs go, Subaru makes one of the betters ones.
Thanks for another good video. Jeep made a very attractive small SUV, both inside and out - much more attractive than any offerings from GM/Ford (or even things like Mazda's CX-3 which I personally find "ugly"). Shame that they put this anemic engine in it - another option with turbo and 200+ hp would be great, though not very practical for 99% of targeted users of this model (females) and the targeted environment (city driving).
I have to thank Alex as he recommended the Jeep Cherokee to me back in 2014. Now that that car is up, I'm stuck with a slew of new crossovers to choose from.
1. 2017 Mini Countryman All4 Cooper S
2. Mazda CX-5
3.Jeep Compass (new one as seen above)
4. Nissan Rogue Sport
Alex, I know you didn't drive all of them but which one would you drive on a daily basis?
Thanks.
Mazda CX-5, by far. I drove one and it is one of the best compact crossovers. Handling is excellent, interior is great, but the power is a little lacking. Other than that it's a perfect crossover.
Evan M why did you exclude the new CRV?
What is Mazda waiting on to put the new Skyactiv turbo in the CX5? That beast would be a hoot to drive
They are putting a new diesel engine in, but I haven't heard anything about the turbo.
I would rank it like this
1. Jeep Compass
2. MINI Countryman All4 Cooper S
3. Mazda CX-5
4. Nissan Rogue Sport
I can't understand why Compass / Renegade are sow slow. Most have 2.4L engines with similar power to CR-Vs, Rav4s, and CX-5s, yet those are all larger and quicker Is it weight? Trans? Low-end torque?
It is mostly because of the weight of the car.
2.4L FIAT World Engine
Its because of the transmission, especially in the 9 speed.
6 speed auto?
Love this review. Do you think Jeep has too many SUVCUVs now?
Elliott Manning in America, that's impossible. They even call hatchback cars suv's now. Honda HRV, Chevy trax, Buick encore ECT.
Jeep is a SUV/CUV brand that covers ever segment there is. by your logic, Toyota has to many cars.
I wonder if this get the new 2.2 litre multijet diesel in the UK? I think that engine would really suit this car.
Higginz1220 Unfortunately, the U.S doesn't get the diesel, which would definitely suit this heavish(for the class) ute. But with GM putting diesels in both the Terrain and Equinox, and FCA having huge success with the EcoDiesels in the GC and Ram, they know there is a market!
HellKitty 101 I'd heard that they were developing a new I-6 diesel to replace the current VM V6. it's going to debut in the Promaster.
Higginz1220 Even better! Love the linear power and simplicity of straight motors! Cummins is re-engineering the 6.7L for 480hp/1000lb-ft of torque!
But what a realy want to know is how tall are you really??
Please correct me if I'm wrong but is this model built by Mazda? The interior looks familiar to me (I have a Mazda), especially the steering wheel.
No.
It looks better than many $40k+ cars
Alex,, do you find the Subaru CrossTrek and Compass are both in a class of their own ?
Brian Carpenter the crosstrek is really in a class of its own. Its a Forrester, that has less room, and costs the same, but comes in orange, and sells like crazy. That thing blows me away, how anyone buys it over a Forrester is just absurd.
Maybe some folks prefer the Crosstrek's styling, fuel economy and smaller size for parking ease. Then there's the Impreza hatchback, which is so similar, just less ground clearance. That's absurd too.
I'm really interested. How's Jeep's reliability now a day?
Did you mean, "How's Jeep's reliability now, a day?"
Yep - they do well till the end of the day you drive it off the lot ..after that, not so much....
"The anti FCA circle-jerk" -- Yeah, that kinda attitude really helps to convince -- no one ever.
Soon I will be purchasing one of these (first time car-buyer). I know dealers like to get the most but should I pay full price for a brand new jeep compass? How much can I bargain?
You wont be able to get the price down unless you pay it cash!!!!! First time carbuyer? Perfect individual to rip off by the dealer personel. Get an older guy who knows cars to help you talk to those wolves at dealership.
Use truecar.com and there is $2000 in factory rebates on the 2018 plus if your credit is below 620 you can get another $750 off. So with factory rebates and truecar you can get almost $5000 off.
Two killers... weak engine, high price (for a loaded one). Plus, unless he missed it, I dont understand why you can see the adaptive cruise control sensor on the front, but the steering wheel had those 3 blank spots that usually have the adaptive cruise control buttons. I hate it so much when you buy a car and you get the blank buttons... its like you are constantly reminded that you couldnt quite afford the nice one... uhg.
wtf are they supposed to do? Design an entirely new steering wheel for all trims?? Wouldn't that impact your number two "killer"? Logical reasoning.
att estou na casa limpa
All they need to add is a turbo model with around 250hp. It's gotta be slow it only 180 hp.
The Compass is about the same size as the Renegade but it's easier on the eyes.
No it's 20cms longer. Cherokee is the same again over Compass, Grand Cherokee 20cms longer than Cherokee - spot a pattern there?
It looks wayyy better than the ugly ass Cherokee.
Its also a small car and not an actual jeep
Don't know man, it says Jeep right there.
Jesus Fuentes with the 2.4 liter engine and The body of the 2017 Jeep Compass is shared with the Renegade and the Fiat 500 as they are all made by Fiat. Everything Chrysler is slowly being switched over to Fiats existing platforms.
Before that, the smaller Jeeps and several models from multiple companies were all Mitsubishi GS platforms. Including several of the previous engines.
The 2,4 liter engine used for the Jeep Compass is actually the old Chrysler 2,4l Tigershark engine which has adopted Fiats revolutionary variable valve intake system (named Multiair), and has also gained variable air intake and in build exhaust manifolds in it's newest version. The Trenton, Michigan assembled engine has gained from this modification more torque which is also better distributed and better fuel economy.
The platform the Jeep Compass shares with the Renegade and Fiat 500x , was co-developed for the purpose. Engineers from both side of the atlantic ( FCA italy and FCA USA) was involved in the project.
Michele Abate The tigershark was originally; The Global Engine Alliance LLC, began as a joint venture of Chrysler, Mitsubishi Motors, and Hyundai Motor Company for developing a line of shared engines.
In September 2009, Chrysler bought Mitsubishi and Hyundai's shares, after 5 years of allied research and development, with its Dundee, Michigan plant becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of what was then Chrysler Group LLC.
Just recently Fiat insert of their tentacles into Chrysler injecting some of their own technology in the process
Trailhawk or bust!!!!
att Rafael bom dia é o cara que eu
It does need more power..
Very impressive car, it went from a shit box to a car I'd buy, but I hate FCA and I'm scared of the horrible reliability
Love that candy-blue- & black color color scheme.. But the engine is just to Wimpy
They can fool the auto journalists all they want, but can't fool the enthusiasts. Only idiots are going to off-road a monocoque car that's gonna be totaled if you hit a rock wrong.
To be honest I had city people tell their friends that they were ' off roading' on a graded gravel road lol
ITS A CHRYSLER!?!?! NUFF SAID! HAHA
Wrong it's a Fiat! Owner of Alfa, Maserati and Ferrari!
I like it but dam it's expensive
Not any more than other compact SUV/CUV. Looked at the Tuscon, Sportage or Escape pricing lately?
This needs an engine with more torque...
put a hellcat in it
ending music ?
You video shows the absolute insanity of using "Piano Black" trim in vehicles as you're reviewing the infotainment system. What manufacturer/automotive supplier dreamed up this crap and thought it was a good idea? It's just a dust and fingerprint magnet. I've ordered an aftermarket dash trim kit for our Kia Niro to address the same issue. Hopefully this FAD will run it's course and be gone in future years.
It looks good. The only downfall is the transmission. Come on Jeep you can do better.
att estou indo no do jardim de e e de conversas de conversas de comp tarde t, que o video que é
obrigado e até agora😍
Looks very much like the escape
Looks nothing like the escape
